Morganton, N.C. - Western Carolina's golf teams combined to edge arch-rival Appalachian State on Thursday, winning the co-ed, head-to-head University Cup competition, 7-to-6, at the Mimosa Hills Golf & Country Club. It is the second time in three years that WCU has defeated its mountain-rival to win the Cup, also taking the first-ever meeting in 2011.
With two matches finishing halved with all-square scoring, Western Carolina won six of its individual matches to ASU's five to win the match-play event. The Catamounts got three match wins on the women's side with three by the men.
Appalachian State took an early 2-0 lead with wins by Haley Zagoria and Lauren Smith with Zagoria needing all 18 holes to fend off WCU freshman Fatima Gonzalez-Carriles. Sophomore Maria Kjelldorff gave the Catamounts their first point with a 4&3 win over Yue Xu.
Also scoring a victory for the Catamounts on the women's side was freshman Taylor Allison with a 2&1 win over Madalyn Davis.
On the men's side, sophomore J.T. Poston defeated Lee Mitchell, 3&2, with Matthew Turner taking the biggest margin of victory on the day, winning after 11 holes, 8&7. WCU senior Kyle Wilson halved his match with ASU's Josh Nichols.
Senior Michelle Bello recorded the biggest comeback in helping the Catamounts score the victory over the Mountaineers. The Dixon, Calif., native was down four before rallying to win her match, taking the 18th to finish 1-up over ASU's Lily Yatawara. There was more drama on the men's side for senior Steven Smith who had to win the final three holes to rally past Casey Komline, 1-up.
With the match in favor of Western Carolina 6.5-5.5 and the Catamounts needing seven points to win the title, ASU's Jake Williams held a 1-up advantage heading into the final hole. Catamount freshman Tyler Lail was able to win the 18th hole to halve the match giving Western Carolina the 7-6 victory.
WCU's women remain in Morganton for a 36-hole tournament at Mimosa Hills April 1-2 before traveling back to Hilton Head Island, S.C., for the Southern Conference Championship April 14-16. The Catamount men's golf team returns to action on April 15-16 at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational, its final tune-up before the SoCon Men's Golf Championship April 21-23 at the Ralston Creek Course on Daniel Island, S.C.
