So how is spring practice going for your schools? Injury updates?
NDSU is set to start monday, 4/1. We are looking to add depth at several positions so the younger guys should get plenty of reps. Our spring game is still up in the air, but I'm sure we will have some sort of scrimmage at least.
Looks like NDSU will miss eight players with injuries this spring: Beck, Smith, Drevlow, Colville, Vaadeland, Perry, Heagle & Crockett.
Also 2 other players have left the team.

Here is an update about Spring football at UND. http://siouxfb.areavoices.com/
UND is scheduled to begin spring football practice on this coming Monday, March 25th. Considering there is a foot of snow on the turf at Memorial Stadium, we are a little skeptical they will be able to open up practice at outdoors. They could move everything into the Alerus, but we aren’t sure about scheduling and availability. Will be interesting to see how it unfolds. Our guess is they will try get it ready to go being the weather is supposed to be in the 30′s for the next week, at least. If not, they will be inside at The Alerus.
Spring game is April 20th. On a side note if UND can get the IPF built soon then snowfall doesn't matter over the winter.

8 of NDSU's key players are hurt/beat up right now. Considering we've played 30 games in the past 2 years, that's not too bad, considering.
I'm sure they will ALL be 100% when fall practice starts. It's going to be a magical season!

How many players are going to be sandbagging next week? NDSU has that little distraction going on again too. I hope the schools can get enough people plus volunteers to make this a successful flood fight.

Honestly, the city needs to be destroyed by a flood a la grand forks. Without a major destruction I feel like the city has been and is going to permanently rely on volunteer help and sandbags for a 5 times a decade flood. Hopefully the politicians can pull their thumbs out of their collective asses before that happens, but I sincerely doubt it.

The cities have spent plenty on permanent flood protection to the point where a fraction of the effort would be needed today that would've been needed in 2009 to protect against a similar scale flood. There's a huge article in the Forum with all the numbers (http://www.inforum.com/event/article/id/394979/) but the flood this year is unlikely to effect spring football or much else for businesses in the Fargo-Moorhead metro.
There is still a tremendous need for a permanent diversion however, especially with a new raised flood plain imminent from FEMA.

Denny's ditch is never going to happen! It's nothing more then another huge waist of taxpayers money. It'll end up like the Garrison Diversion if it's started at all. It's a stupid idea the COE dreamed up to get some funding to keep people employed for the next 50 years! Fargo can be protected to 42 feet by simply buying out a few more houses and adding to their existing levees. That stupid diversion is all about developing the land around Davies, nothing more.

Lehigh's spring practice has basically hit the halfway point. From what I gather, the offense is coming together nicely as anticipated and the defense is trying to deal with a lot of new faces. One thing that should help the D, especially the front seven, is going up against a very good, experienced OL everyday in practice.

slostang's post on the Cal Poly forum makes the QB fight look even more interesting. Here it is ...
Link: http://gopoly.com/sports/fball/2013-14/roster
New transfers:
QB Dano Graves, So. - transfer Air Force
DB Domique Love (Malik Love's brother), Rfr - transfer New Mexico State
TE Austin Albison, Jr. - transfer College of the Sequoias
Interesting to see two players listed at TE (Brandan Quinn also listed at TE).
The Dano Graves transfer, in particular, is quite interesting. Dano was a highly recruited QB out of HS. The Domique Love transfer will also add considerable talent to the defensive backfield. The Austin Albison transfer would indicate that Poly may make a change in their offense (probably to take advantage of one of the several very talented QBs they have on their roster by adding an effective Tight End position, a position they have not really taken advantage of the last few years.)

His senior year he threw for 3,702 yards with 63 TDs while rushing for 994 yars and 23 TDs. Dano is only 5'9" which would be a concern in a Pro style offense, but should be fine in Cal Poly's triple option offense. They listed Broudous at 6'0", but he was 5'10 or 5'11". It will help that he has played in a triple option offense the last two seasons at Air Force.
The twist here is he will be competing with former Folsom HS teammate and the player who replaced him there, tanner Trosin. Trosin threw for a then California HS state record 5,185 yards and 49 TDs and rushed for 1,179 yards and 27 TDs. Should be fun to watch this battle this spring.

Ok Slo, so who is gonna get the nod at starting QB? I'm completely stumped. At the end of the season I would have said Moraga with Trosin nipping at his heels.
I also would have said that there were significant changes coming in offense because Trosin in particular can air it out. In addition, Cal Poly probably has its best group of receivers since 08'.
Now comes complete confusion when they pick up Graves. Amazing talent for sure but almost a prototype option guy.
Somebody's playing DB or maybe WR (Brown?)...Graves and Trosin are both super talented but seem to fit different styles of offense. Moraga has the most experience in the system. I'm at a loss...no idea whose getting the job.

Got a scrimmage today at 3. Hopefully the defense won't dominate as much as they did the first scrimmage. Kinda scary since coach held out 3 or 4 of our best defenders last scrimmage. Offense has got to get it going.

Just curious, why such a late start?
Seems like in your locale they could go as early as they wanted to in the spring semester. Seems like there might be some advantage to getting it over and done with and letting the guys start hitting the weights and getting grades up for the second half of the semester?

I think that's normal for spring ball. Defense doesn't have to learn as much and they can cut it loose earlier on. A lot of times, especially with younger guys, they have to think waaaaay too much when trying to learn assignments in the offense and it makes them play slow and timid, because they're so worried about going the wrong way, blocking the wrong guy, running the wrong route, etc.
Just the way it is.

Poly's schedule is not like most other schools. First, they are not on the semester system. They are on the "quarter" system, which allows 3 quarters for the regular school year and 1 quarter for the summer. 3 quarter units are equal to 2 semester units. In this system, school doesn't even start until late in September, in 2012 it was September 18. The 1st quarter ended prior to the Winter Break. The 2nd quarter just recently ended, so Spring Practice is really starting at the beginning of the 3rd Quarter (which actually started April 1). 3rd quarter final exams will be held June 10 - 14.
Frankly, I think they would have done well to start a little earlier as they expect 25 or 30 thousand visitors on campus the weekend of April 18 - 20 for their annual Open House, sometimes called Poly Royal, an event where they show off the campus and it's classrooms to parents, friends, prospective students, and to anyone that just happens to show up. The atmosphere is often like a carnival, and I think they could have filled the football field with a scrimmage. It's too bad the schedule doesn't quite fit for this event.
Regarding cpalums comment above ...
"Graves and Trosin are both super talented but seem to fit different styles of offense. Moraga has the most experience in the system. I'm at a loss...no idea whose getting the job" ...
I suspect that even the coaches don't really know at this time. I don't think they've seen Graves other than by video and I don't think they had yet made their minds up on Moraga and Trosin. I think they wanted to see them in Spring Practice and then even maybe in August to see how they react with the receivers that have been brought in.
I don't think we'll know until after the San Diego game, where I expect all three to see action. I believe the Fresno State game is where we will see the offense that our new Offensive Coordinator prepares for us, and where the starting QB will be announced.
Just a crazy thought ... how about an offense with two QBs in the backfield ... not every play, but ...

- Running back Adam Shaugabay had the longest run of the session - churning out a 15-yard gain before being forced out of bounds.
- Sophomore linebacker Will Ratelle had two tackles for loss in a stretch of three-consecutive stops in the backfield by the defense towards the end of the drills.
- Sophomore wide receiver Casey Young concluded practice by catching a corner route, then taking it the distance after breaking a shoestring tackle. Young also had two other catches in the live periods. Redshirt freshman Anthony Fletcher was also active, catching three passes.
- In the second team period before live drills, redshirt freshman Ryan Bartels completed two long post patterns to Greg Hardin and Kenny Golladay, respectively. Both completions went for 50-plus yards.
- Senior placekicker Zeb Miller finally got to do kick some field goals in practice as the special teams emphasis was on placekicking. By our count, Miller made his first four attempts before pushing one from wide right.
