Since Austen Rowland left Lehigh, where he was the 2004 Patriot League Player of the Year, his professional career has been relatively nondescript. That all changed with his role in a bizarre, end-of-game play in the French League on March 15th.
Playing with Boulogne, Rowland had the ball on the final possession and the score tied 84-all against Rouen. With Rowland trapped on the sideline and under five seconds left, the game appear headed for overtime.
That is, until Rouen coach Laurent Sciarra tried stealing the ball from Rowland while it was still in play.
The official whistled Sciarra for a technical foul, sending Boulogne to the line for two free throws. Both shots were converted, and Boulogne had itself an 86–84 win.
It was clear that for the briefest of seconds, Sciarra immediately reverted to player mode and went after the ball. It was enough to cost his team the game in the weirdest manner possible.
