RICHMOND, VA. — Delaware’s ouster from the CAA men’s basketball tournament Sunday had the faint feel of a punch in the gut.
When that faded, disappointment and anger lingered. Bitterness may be permanent.
Delaware’s shot at its first title-game appearance dissolved in a hail of missed opportunities and referees whistles Sunday at the Richmond Coliseum.
As he emerged moments after a 58-57 semifinal loss to James Madison, irked Blue Hens coach Monte Ross’ first words as he came on his postgame radio show were, “We got cheated.”

“The ref called out of bounds so I was out of bounds” was all Threatt would say in relation to the play. Ross had a different opinion.
“He wasn’t out of bounds,” Ross said in the postgame press conference. “He didn’t step out of bounds. The ball didn’t go out of bounds.”
JMU’s Devon Moore was then ruled to have been fouled at the other end by Hagins on what some felt could have been a travel or held ball. Moore converted both free thows to put the Dukes ahead 58-57.

Devon Saddler, whose streak of 38 games scoring in double figures was stopped, missed a jumper at the buzzer. Delaware coaches made beelines for referees and angrily expressed disagreement with their late decisions. Ross later spoke in animated fashion to CAA commissioner Tom Yeager.
