The talk of a A-Sun and Big South alliance is interesting. An A-10/CAA-type football deal might make limited sense but is probably unrealistic. Several of the football teams are PFL teams and wouldn't fit in with the scholarship teams. In addition, just about every scholarship team in the Big South would leave this afternoon if it received an offer from the SoCon, CAA, or even SBC.

ETSU released a pro forma statement breaking down the FB budget. New coach could make $340k/yr, with coaches' pool to climb to $1 mil/yr. ETSU will award scholarships in 2014-15 school year to the tune of $480k.

That's no PFL budget. $340k for a head coach would be at the top of FCS schools.

Given that Noland has been spotted at the SoCon tournament earlier this month, I am not surprised.

The reasons this is realistic are that same as you state is unrealistic. The A-Sun would retain membership of those schools that want to play scholarship football in an autobid conference and the BSC would get the benefit of a school or two to help provide insurance to maintain the autobid if anyone leaves for another conference. Gardner-Webb transferred to the BSC from the A-Sun, but if this arrangement was available at that time they may have joined the BSC as associate members in football.

A number of schools are ... will be interesting to see how the SoCon decides to go. ETSU makes sense for a number of reasons, but also has some challenges.

ETSU: 'Major announcements' about football coming today
Updated April 2, 2013 10:49 AM
By Staff Reports - JohnsonCityPress.com
Now that the necessary fee has been approved, East Tennessee State University administrators will make "major announcements" this evening about a new football program. According to the university, a news conference will be held at 5 p.m. to provide further details.
I wonder what these "major announcements" are? Could conference affiliation announcements be on the agenda?

Good point. Could be naming a coach. Fulmer would be a slam dunk. Hope that's the case.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 2, 2013) – During a news conference today, East Tennessee State University President Dr. Brian Noland announced plans to start a football program that could be on the field by the fall 2015 semester.
His announcement came four days after the Tennessee Board of Regents approved a $125 student fee increase that will be used to fund the program. The ETSU Student Government Association voted to recommend the fee this past January. The increase is expected to generate approximately $2.5 million in revenue.
...
Noland added that announcements regarding a head coach, conference affiliation, and possible locations for a playing field will be made at a later date.

If he's talking about the right man to lead the team, it suggests that he is not the man.
