30 years after being allowed back in the MEAC under the express written condition that UMES restart their football program and with numerous feasibility studies and fundraisers trotted out over the years, the president of UMES has finally admitted "Gotcha b-tches!"

UMES president Juliette B. Bell today announced her acceptance of a task force recommendation that the university not restart its football program, which has been dormant since 1980.

Bell had commissioned a task force to evaluate a study conducted by an independent consultant that weighed the pros and cons of adding a football program at UMES.

“The university is not currently in position, with either human or fiscal resources, to reinstate football at this time,” the task force report said.

UMES' football program was a powerhouse among Historically Black Colleges and Universities, compiling a 76.4 percent winning percentage from 1946 to 1970. Several Hawks players went on to play in the NFL, including Art Shell, Emerson Boozer, Roger Brown, Johnny Sample and many others....

Shouldn't matter that it was 30 years ago.

Honestly, it wouldn't shock me if this whole, "study to bring back football" was all a ploy on UMES's part to remain a member for a set time period (who knows how long), so either their agreement would be forgotten or be null and void (I wonder if there is a significance to the date March 1, 2013)...and being that they were ALREADY a full member of the conference, there was no action to be taken against them, even if said membership was acquired under false pretenses.

Well it seems that they are backtracking. Now they're saying that they will "revisit" the issue in five years.

PRINCESS ANNE, Md - It's been nearly 35 years since the last intercollegiate football season at UMES, and nearly eight months after officials ended the drive for an official football program, the game still goes on.

It's the sophomore season of the school's club football team, which now plays in the National Club Football Association, where they're undefeated in the Mid Atlantic Conference.

"Football motivates some of these kids you know," said Offensive Coach Jawan Poole. "It gives them a little bit of life."

And that's something that's needed at the school, says Professor Bryant Mitchell, Head Coach of the team.

"What I really care about is the competitive attitude, the competitive spirit that I feel is missing from this university," Mitchell said.

Mitchell also works with Hawks for Football, Inc., a non-profit pushing for the reinstatement of football at UMES. The group also runs the "Skip McCain Fund," which finances the football program.

After the February decision by UMES President Juliette Bell, the university said it will revisit the school's financial situation in three years to see if it is in a place to support a football team.

"We've always been an institution where the lack of resources was never a deterrent," Mitchell said.

And the spirit of the game is still strong.

The crowd braved the rain Saturday to watch the Hawks take on the Delaware Gamecocks of Dover, a team with it's own unique circumstances.

"My guys go to Delaware Tech and some of them go to Wilmington University," said Head Coach Ronike Haynie. "They came from programs where they weren't groomed to be collegiate athletes."
