I will be going and my tickets just arrived today for the Wells Fargo Center. Anyone familiar enough with downtown Des Moines for some tips on restaurants and parking for the Center, and bus service etc? Will be sitting in the 'bowl', section 107.

Sorry- can't help you with info. One of my best friends, Steve Johnson of Nicollet, MN should be there. He has been going to the nationals for years- I remember hearing a lot of stories when he went out to Penn State and St. Louis. You will remember him if you run into him- he is a crazy fun guy.

Ah, don't let them sell you that line. If a school wants to do something they find a way to do it. Just a question of their priorities on spending money. I absolutely love folkstyle wrestling (high school and collegiate), but as a father of and grandfather of girls, I want them to have the same opportunities that boys have.

Complete Qualifier list, 33 wrestlers in each of 10 weight classes, will be released tomorrow. This will include the Wild Cards. Lehigh keeping fingers crossed on Welsh (149), Hamlin (184) and Bolich (197). Seedings will be released next week.

Women's wrestling is coming along. I wrestled on the same team as this girl in high school... USA Wrestling (http://www.cusaw.org/?p=769)
She has done very well for herself with wrestling.

Also DSM is home to some of the worst drivers in America...I know a lot of people say that about a lot of areas - DSM might qualify.

Thanks. Flying non-stop into Omaha and renting a car. Better than having to change planes/delays/baggage lost, plus I need to drive anyway with where they have us lodged in West Des Moines. Was planning on taking my Tom-Tom with me, though it hasn't been updated lately. I usually don't have to use it much. Guess I better update!

Qualifying list came out today and Lehigh's Welsh at 149 and Hamlin at 184 have been selected as wild cards. Now, it's up to the doctors to clear them for the tournament. Welsh separated shoulder on Friday and Hamlin a hip pointer. We'll see what magic trainer Jack Foley can do. Hamln will likely make it. Not sure if a shoulder sep can heal enough in 10 days.

Des Moines is very easy to get from one side to another (E-W and N-S due to interstates) but once you get into town(s) Urbandale, Johnston, West Des Moines, Altoona, Waukee, etc... it gets very confusing - especially the Johnston, West Des Moines, Waukee area. It's growing so fast that schools can't keep up. Waukee is the smallest area in the DSM metro and it just opened a brand new school...it's already too small.
If you want a place to eat Jethro's is one of the most famous in the area. The Other Place is great pizza.
The Jordan Creek Shopping Center is amazing as well

There are plenty of good places to eat and drink in downtown Des Moines. El Bait Shop has over a hunderd different beers on tap and right next to it is the High life lounge that was on Man vs. Food the bar is like walking into a 70's bar but has some really good food. I recomend the chicken pot pie and the bacon wrapped tator tots.

The Court Ave. District in downtown Des Moines is easy to get to from Wells Fargo with the Skywalk system and has plenty of different choices to eat or drink. 3

You have your hockey. It's your choice of Hockey with woman's hockey, or wrestling and something else.
Back on topic.
"INDIANAPOLIS - North Dakota State senior 184-pounder Mac Stoll and sophomore heavyweight Evan Knutson were among the at-large bids for the 2013 NCAA Wrestling Championships announced Wednesday evening by the NCAA. Stoll and Knutson will join senior Trent Sprenkle (125 pounds) and junior Steven Monk (165 pounds) to give NDSU four qualifiers for the national meet...."

Thanks all for the suggestions. Forecast looking promising with next Weds. through Sunday being sunny and low 40's during the day. Lehigh will be sending five. Although Welsh received wild card at 149,the doctor said 'no go'.Not only separated shoulder, but torn labrum as well. Hamlin (184) and Napoli (157) received #3 seeds and Brown (174) is seeded #9. Cruz and Salupo unseeded, but capable of making some noise. LUWN going out on the limb and predicting a top 10 finish, which would be fantastic with our depleted team this year. I'd be pleased with a top 15 and an all-american or two.

Spent some time down in the Court District the past two days. Very nice tavern that has its own microbrews located on end of Court Street. Also a good Mexican restaurant nearby. But getting around Des Moines is a breeze! There is no traffic. Even during the weekday. Five and six lane roads with no cars on ! Philly and NY have narrow streets and tons of cars.
Penn State has a virtual insurmountable lead over Okie State with five finalists. While Lehigh's tournament has been somewhat disappointing with our #3 seed getting bounced in the first day, we do have a finalist in Robert Hamlin at 184 going against PSU's Ed Ruth tonight, the #1 seed. Hamlin is seeded #3. ESPN carrying live at 8 p.m. EDST. The Dake/Taylor match will be last due to the potential historic implications. Dake , if he wins, will be the first wrestler in NCAA history to win four national championships at four different weight classes. However, Taylor has pinned all opponents in the tournament, so it will not be cakewalk.

Anyone run into the three Johnson's from Nicollet, MN there? They just sent me a couple of pictures from there. Great guys- all wrestling coaches.

Penn State locks up its 3rd straight title. As I said years ago PSU will be the team to beat for many years to come. The best HS wrestling state in the nation has the best coach in the country at the states largest University.
Just wait until Chance Marsteller gets to PSU!

The final match lived up to its hype. Congrats to Dake on his historic win.
My son wrestles in high school, but I'd never watched college wrestling before. I was very impressed with what I saw. I just wish we had more college opportunities close to where I live (Birmingham, AL), but that's life. He'll be a junior next year so I'll just enjoy it while it lasts.

People need to pressure Auburn to return wrestling. They had it a few decades ago. I think the NCAA's were also held there in the early '70's. If your sone is good, he can wrestle anywhere. Several southern kids wrestling for 'nawthin schools'. PLus The Citadel, App.State, UTC and making good strides.

Your guys wrestled great. "Ugi" beat our soph at 141 in a good match. I'm glad to see some southern schools making some noise. We need to return this great sport to the South.

Our Mongolian wrestlers are top notch, as are a few others. We are set up pretty good for the next couple years.

I think that wrestling and baseball have suffered the most from Title 9. My wrestling coach friend once showed me a list of the schools who had dropped the sport. He was one of my biggest supporters when I coached girl's basketball- he was certainly not against women's sports. But he couldn't understand why they would cut one sport to add another.

The problem is most schools didn't have the spine to take one of the other options in showing that they were providing 'proportionate opportunities' to women as opposed to going strictly by percentages of the student body. Money an obvious factor, but considering how much is spent on football due to size of squads, staffs and equipment, it's hard to no laugh when the schools say they can't spend the comparative pitance wrestling costs.
