• The 2006 season kicks off on Saturday as the No. 10 UMass football team plays host to Colgate at the newly-resurfaced McGuirk Alumni Stadium in Amherst. The tilt marks the first-ever game on the Minutemen's new FieldTurf which was installed this past summer. UMass has been practicing on the field for the last two weeks. Saturday is Public Safety Day. For fans, check out the Sprint NASCAR Experience in MinuteFan Park.

The Minutemen come off a 7-4 season in 2005 when they finished the season ranked No. 19 in the nation. They were as high as No. 5 during the season. Don Brown is in his third year at UMass and comes into the season with a 13-9 record. All-time, he is in his 10th year as a head coach and has a 65-35 all-tim mark, coaching his 100th career game in the 2005 finale at Hofstra.

And if the current forecast holds, thanks for the field turf!! Ernesto could very likely drench New England this weekend. At least this year you won't have to worry about chewing up the field leaving a mess for the rest of the season.
