DENVER—The Western Athletic Conference announced today that an invitation for affiliate membership has been issued to and accepted by North Dakota to join the conference in baseball starting with the 2013-14 academic year.

“We are pleased to announce the addition of North Dakota to our baseball league,” said WAC Interim Commissioner Jeff Hurd. “UND will be a great fit with the other baseball teams in the conference and we believe North Dakota will play a viable role in advancing WAC baseball into the future.”

The addition will give the WAC a total of 10 teams for baseball as UND will join CSU Bakersfield, Chicago State, Grand Canyon, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Sacramento State, Seattle U, Texas-Pan American and Utah Valley in 2014.

I'm actually surprised UND has a baseball team. Those March home games must be a treat.

Glad that UND found a home for baseball. Looks like the WAC will be in business for everything except football.

I'm not sure if you are joking, but baseball and softball teams play all of their early season games down south or in the Metrodome. I think the home games don't start until mid-April.

True. UND's first 8 games are in the Metrodome starting this Monday. Our first home game is April 19th...32 games into the season. Baseball isn't a major sport for us northern teams due to our climate.

This is the second sport UND is a member of the WAC. They are also WAC members for women's swimming and diving.

Never got an invite. Ask Douple why they wouldn't want another team or two (UNC) in the six team league.

Don't be surprised as this shifts, that UND and UNC do indeed receive invitations to the Summit, INCLUDING FOOTBALL. Yes, it is the NCC 2.0, but that's pretty good group, and focused into the Upper midwest, east face of Rockies.

The Summit has shed the weak sisters (Centenary, UMKC, Chicago St.) and are moving up in RPI ratings relative to many of the other conferences. Summit would benefit, and so would UNC/UND in baseball by associating with a midwestern league. ORU dominated for years in baseball, but the remaining teams are fairly equally funded.

The SL is in very very bad shape and Douple is screwing that conference up big time. The league is in danger of losing its AQ status not only in baseball but in basketball as well. UMKC leaving was a blow but not getting UND and or UNC was another blow. If Oakland leaves before Omaha is full DI members (2016) then the SL will be below the minimum number of teams with 4. NDSU, SDSU, Oakland, WIL, IPFW is the current teams. Denver, and South Dakota doesn't have baseball. Not gaining UND and UNC could prove costly, and only Douple is to blame for this mistake as UND's baseball coach said he never got a response from the SL.

Asked about UND and baseball affiliation with the Summit, Douple said it was “discussed among some members” but “(UND)

hadn’t indicated anything.”

“I know they were looking for a home for baseball, that was obvious because they joined the Big Sky,” Douple said.

UND head coach Jeff Dodson, however, told the Grand Forks Herald newspaper, “We had applied for the Summit but I never heard anything personally from them.”

I would like the NCC 2.0, especially if UNO hadn't dropped football.

I really liked the NCC 1.0.

Thank Trev Alberts for that. UNO was tough in football and would've made a good FCS team.

SDSU

AND- bring in an NCC team from long ago- UNI. That would be a very good foundation to a conference.

Why not add Minnesota State to the Summit/MVFC?

I wonder if the former NCC teams would leave the SL and have UND and UNC leave the BSC for the WAC in sports other than football. I don't see UND reunited with their former NCC pals in football unless we all move up or teams start leaving the MVFC.

Why not add Minnesota State to the Summit/MVFC?

They all should have moved up circa 1999 as a conference. I was told that they had the votes to do it on the first day of the NCC meetings, and suddenly overnight a couple of teams changed their minds. The problem would be if MSU went D1 they would drop football. That would suck too much. They did that the year after I graduated from MSU and dropped out of the NCC- it set the program back at least a decade. The next fall was incredibly boring- there was no reason to come back to campus until basketball.

So I don't see MSU or SCSU moving up. They talked about dropping football a while back too. I'd hate losing our biggest rival.

It used to be called Mankato State until about 2001...Long after "Coach" was off the air. :)

MN State's colors are purple and gold- on the show, the Screaming Eagles were purple, gold and orange. They also used the University of Iowa buildings for background shots- and game footage from a Minnesota-Wisconsin game for the show.

Which is something that usually isn't talked about. UND baseball in the GWC is unknown. But now with an AQ conference and hopefully better recruiting, UND could become a better team and a playoff berth could be on the horizon. 2014 will be a good year for UND baseball!!
