Gardner-Webb hauled in a good-looking class despite a last minute coaching change.
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb head football coach Carroll McCray announced an 18-man recruiting class on Wednesday, National Signing Day, with six enrolled for the spring semester.
The class includes student-athletes from seven states, American Samoa and Australia.
"We are excited about this group," said McCray, who was introduced as head coach on January 28. "Coming in at the end of January, we sat down and evaluated the young men who had chosen Gardner-Webb prior to our arrival, and came away impressed with the quality of these guys on the field. The strong character we encountered when meeting with and speaking to them gave us a lot of confidence in the type of young men we are adding to the program. There is no doubt they will help us on and off the field."
Three of the recruits – safety Spencer Havird (6-2, 185, El Cajon, Calif.), receiver Kalay Jones (6-2, 185, Union, S.C.) and linebacker Justin Miller (6-2, 210, Colorado Springs, Colo.) – earned All-State honors following the 2012 season.
Gardner-Webb added five defensive backs, six linemen – three on each side of the football – one linebacker and six offensive skill players.
Two of the lineman hail from outside the Continental United States. Defensive tackle Phillip Fata (6-3, 290, Jr.) played high school football at Samoana High in American Samoa before spending time at Golden West College in California.
Offensive tackle Jordan Stalker (6-5, 295, Fr.) is the first football player to sign with Gardner-Webb from Australia. He was a member of the IFAF World Development Team training camp and was courted by several major programs – including Hawaii, Colorado State and Georgia Tech.

"I am extremely happy with our 2013 signing class. While only having three weeks to put together a recruiting class, the coaches were able to identify student-athletes that were ideal fits for our University and for the makeup of our football team. We tried, in the short amount of time we had to recruit, to hit areas I was familiar with and had ties to. We were able to get seven young men from the state of South Carolina to believe in the vision we have for Charleston Southern football. These student-athletes will be a driving force behind our resurgence in recruiting our home state. We were able to go out of state and bring in some quality players that will be able to fill some immediate needs for our program...This group of young men will solidify the foundation that already exists and be a catalyst for the program going forward."

New Charleston Southern Head Coach Jamey Chadwell Signs 18 Players (Post and Courier - Charleston, SC) (http://www.postandcourier.com/article/20130207/PC20/130209459/1032/new-charleston-southern-football-coach-signs-16-players)
“We basically looked at what our needs were and tried to fill them with quality young men who want to be at Charleston Southern,” Chadwell said. “I feel like our coaches did a great job of identifying the players that we needed and we ended up signing a great group of young men. “We had a lot of work do to in a short amount of time but we are very thankful for the young men who have chosen our program and have bought into our vision for this program.”
Of the linemen, Chris Sullivan of Mauldin and Alex Waters of Greer were all-state selections and considered two of the better lineman prospects in the senior class of South Carolina. Both players participated in the North-South all-star game in December.
“We have a good group returning along the offensive line but we felt it was important for us to add some quality depth,” said Chadwell. “I am really impressed with the linemen that we were able to sign.”
Clinton High placekicker/punter Truett Burnes also earned all-state honors, as did Greenwood High athlete Larenzo Mathis.
Wide receiver Colton Korn comes from the highly successful Byrnes High program and is the younger brother of former Clemson quarterback Willy Korn.
“We were careful not to sign numbers just to sign them. We wanted kids who were coming here for the right reasons and who could contribute to what we are building here.”
Chadwell anticipates signing a few more players later this week or next week. “We left some spots open for some kids that we think we will get but could not get on signing day,” he said.
Excellent job by Coach Chadwell and staff. Very solid class!
