Anxious to see how he pans out. Howard is awful (like hasn't won a game in two years awful), but App has had success coming into the Georgia fall line and plucking good DBs (Mark Legree comes to mind).

It's great to see Furman taking a couple of players from FBS teams; Olusanya was offered by just about every MAC team… most thought he was going to sign with Bowling Green. And Aaron Black had seven FBS offers (including Cincy). Bounamia was a 2 star out of Brookwood and had multiple FBS offers. Great day for the DINS, I know stars don't mean jack, but Furman rarely has this many, I think nine to ten players will sign with Furman with at least 2 stars this year.

What's with Furman's pipeline into Tennessee? Not traditionally known as a state for talent and it's not like the cupboard is bare in SC.

This is just my opinion, but recall that a good chunk of Furman's coaching staff have Vanderbilt ties. The Recruiting Coordinator, Norval McKenzie, was a former Vandy running back.

Furman has pulled in players from Tennessee pretty routinely over the years. Jerome Felton and Ingle Martin were both TN products. What is equally impressive (to me) is the number of kids coming out of Central Florida.

I think he flipped from S.Alabama to Samford and now you guys

He was committed to Samford as recently as 2-3 days ago, I believe. Very big late pick-up for us. Unlike most years, we held on to all of our verbal commitments and actually added one at the last minute. It was great to get a second RB in this class and this kid is a serious talent. ESPN has him ranked as the #59 RB in the country.

How accurate is ESPN on what schools have offered prospects?

Most of the time those are crap shoots. GSU's a great team, but if they beat actual offers from half the SEC and Big 10 for a kid, I'd be surprised. Maybe those are gray shirt offers, or preferred walkons, or the like.

We managed to poach a couple from FBS teams, AFA most notably. The PA-Higgins connection is definitely apparent.

Still waiting on a few LOIs.

He came in the summer, and I think he fell in love with this place. We fell in love with him. What a great addition for us. He was one of our first commitments, and hung in there a long time with us with a lot of people looking at him, and trying to get him to change his mind. We feel like he can spin it, and we are excited to have Alejandro."

"Xavier came in the middle of January. We like him from day one. We think he's going to be a great inside receiver for us. He can run. Same high school as Derrick Lott, so we've had some nice success there. Great kid, great family. We are excited to have him in the program. I think he can do a lot of things in the return game. Like I said, inside slot receiver, great hands, and excellent speed."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Malcolm Colvin - TE - 6-2 - 215 - Fr.-HS - Fort Valley, Ga. (Peach County HS)

Head Coach Russ Huesman on Malcolm Colvin:
"Malcolm was in our camp too. We've had quite a few guys in our camp, and he was very, very impressive. He could run. Physical looking guy that played both sides of the ball, but we recruited him as a tight end. We love the speed, we love the athleticism. We're really excited to have him. Again, we had him in camp, and we were really impressed with him, not only as a player, but also as a person. We think he'll be a great addition for us."

Head Coach Russ Huesman on Derrick Craine:
"Derrick was also in our camp, and we really liked him. I think the thing we really like about Derrick is the toughness he brings to that position. He'll fit in nicely with a one-back system. I think he can do all those things. He's got really good speed, he can make you miss. But I think the one thing about him is that he's a strong runner. I just love his mental outlook on football, his toughness. He's football 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That's kind of what we were looking for in that position. We were only taking one there this year, and we identified him early on, liked him, and made the decision. Thank goodness Derrick decided to come here."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

T.J. Jenkins - LB - 6-2 - 210 - Fr.-HS - Tampa, Fla. (Plant HS)
Two-star linebacker prospect according to Rivals.com ... standout player at Plant High School in Tampa, Fla. ... played for head coach robert Weiner ... led the Panthers to the 2011 8A Florida state title as a junior ... Jenkins ... born June 15, 1994 ... son of Terrance and Althea Jenkins ... plans to major in Criminal Justice.

Head Coach Russ Huesman on T.J. Jenkins:
"T.J. is a linebacker. We watched him on film. No question, slam dunk. We offered immediately after watching him. Coach Fuller went down to Florida, and did a great job of recruiting T.J. The one thing I want to say about T.J., not only can he play, but he's a man of his word. He made a commitment to Chattanooga and Chattanooga Football, and never wavered one bit. He had a FBS school come in late with a big time relationship with his high school, and T.J. said no, hung in there with us, and made a commitment. I can't wait to see him again so I can hug him. Great kid, and again, from a super family. I think he's going to be an excellent player for us, and we're so happy to have him."

Head Coach Russ Huesman on D.J. Prather:
"D.J. was another one that was in our camp, and I think this guy is a future star. If he works and does what we think he can do, he can be as good as we've had here at the position, and we've had a lot of good ones. He's got a lot of ability, I watched him play basketball, and he's fluid. D.J. had a Conference USA school come in, tried to steal him late in the recruiting process. He hung in there, said no, and he made a commitment to Chattanooga and Chattanooga Football. I've already had the opportunity to hug him. When they can hang in there like that with us, with a late push from FBS schools, that says a lot about him as a person and his family. I just think he's going to be an excellent addition to our football program."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jacob Revis - OL - 6-2 - 290 - Fr.-HS - Dayton, Tenn. (Rhea County HS)

PERSONAL ...full name is Jacob Dylan Revis ... born Aug. 14, 1994 ... son of Rusty and Laura Revis ... older brother, Kevin, is a senior offensive lineman for the Mocs ... plans to major in Exercise Science.

Head Coach Russ Huesman on Jacob Revis:
"I think a lot of people know about Jacob here. Excellent, excellent, excellent high school football career. He comes from a great family. We have Kevin on the team, and Kevin is as good as we've had at that position, not only as a player, but a person in the program. We feel Jacob is going to be just the same. He can play. Great leverage, great pad level. I think if he was two inches taller he would've been recruited by everybody. Fortunately for us, he chose Chattanooga. I think with the connection, it helped us. I think he's going to be a really good player. Again, we get the Revis family with us for another four or five years, and that makes us feel real good."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Taylor Reynolds - DT - 6-3 - 270 - Fr.-HS - McCalla, Ala. (McAdory HS)
Honorable mention all-state as a senior at McAdory High School in McCalla, Ala. ... played for head coach David Powell ... led the team to the Alabama 5A state title game with a 14-1 record as a senior ... named all-west first team and to the all-metro team ... posted 88 tackles, five sacks and seven TFLs ... listed as one of the top defensive line recruits in Alabama by Scout.com ... four-year letterwinner on the baseball team ... PERSONAL ...full name is Taylor Barclay Reynolds ... born Nov. 29, 1994 ... son of Aimee and Jeremy Reynolds ... has a younger sister, Hannah ... plans to major in Criminal Justice.

Head Coach Russ Huesman on Taylor Reynolds:
"I think Taylor maybe the biggest sleeper in this group. When he was recruited, he had some scholarship offers from other people. He's 6'3"-6'4", 260 pounds. I think he's going to be a great, great player. I watched him practice baseball. He's fluid, he can run. We're excited to have him. He came in on an official visit on the first weekend of January, and he was the only prospect in here. We really bonded with him and his family. I think getting him from Alabama was huge for us, and we're thrilled to have him."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tyler Roberson - QB - 6-4 - 210 - Fr.-HS - Martinez, Ga. (Augusta Christian)
All-state quarterback from Augusta Christian School in Martinez, Ga. ... posted a 13-0 record and won the 2012 South Carolina Independent Schools AAA State Title ... BETA Club ... PERSONAL ...full name is Tyler Patrick Roberson ... born May 26 ,1994 ... son of Paula and Cliff Roberson ... has two younger sisters, Carolina & Emily, and a younger brother, Sam ... undecided on a major

Head Coach Russ Huesman on Tyler Roberson:
"Tyler was in our camp too. He is a big, athletic quarterback. With him and Alejandro both, we were looking for guys that could throw it. I think when you watch Tyler on film, you'll know, he cannot only throw it, but he's got phenomenal athletic ability. He's a great kid. We were very, very excited about him when he was in our camp. When came for the official visit, there was no question that he was the type of quarterback that we were looking for. He held off a few of our competitors towards the end there in the Southern Conference and hung tough with us. Again, I think Tyler is going to be a great addition to our football program."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jerkerious Scott - DB - 6-0 - 195 - Fr.-HS - Dawson, Ga. (Terrell County High School)
All-region offensive player of the year at Terrell County High School in Dawson, Ga. ... played for head coach William Huff ... two-time team captain and team MVP ... all-district as a junior ... played quarterback where he rushed for over 1,100 yards and for 600 yards ... made 72 total tackles on defense ... also lettered in baseball, basketball and track & field ... member of the National Honor Society ... all-district in baseball and all-region in track as a junior ... fourth in the state in the 100M and fifth in the state in the 200M ... PERSONAL ... grandson of Patricia Perry ... plans to major in Engineering.

Head Coach Russ Huesman on Jerkerious Scott:
"Jerkerious played DB, but most of highlights were on the offensive side of the ball. I've always said when I recruit secondary people, like a DB, that I want somebody that has the ball in their hands, and this guy was electric. He was a really, really good defensive player, and there's no question he can play safety for us or at any level. But I think the thing that excited me was his speed, his fluidness, had the ball in his hands, he was a playmaker. I think he's another one of those that is a sleeper."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Channing Smith - OL - 6-4 - 280 - So.-TR - Kermit, W.Va. (Marshall)
Transfer from Marshall where he spent the last two seasons ... 2011 graduate of Pike County Central High School in Pikeville, Ky. ... two-time all-state offensive lineman ... led the Hawks to a 12-2 record as a senior ... played for head coach John Chapman ... all-district in baseball and basketball ... Honor Roll ... PERSONAL ...full name is Michael Channing Smith ... born Oct. 14, 1992 ... son of Bruce Smith and Nancy Null ... has four younger brothers, Abe, Ethan, Brody, Trey, and a younger sister, Abby ... majoring in Exercise Physiology.

Head Coach Russ Huesman on Channing Smith:
"We're excited to have Channing. He actually went through spring as (Marshall's) starting center. I think the thing we like about him is that he can play multiple positions. I think he can be a tackle, guard, or center for us. He's a nice size offensive lineman. Again, he comes from a really good family, an athletic family. His dad is a basketball coach and a football coach. So we're very excited to have Channing. He's looked very good so far in the weight room, and we're anxious to get him out there on the field in spring practice."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alphonso Stewart - WR - 6-3 - 190 - Fr.-HS - Robertsdale, Ala. (Robertsdale HS)
Two-star wide receiver prospect according to Rivals.com ... team MVP at Robertsdale High School in Robertsdale, Ala. ... played for head coach Brian Campbell ... also an all-county honoree in basketball ... Honor Roll ... PERSONAL ...full name is Alphonso Damon Marques Stewart ... born Sept. 15, 1994 ... son of Alphonso and Demetria Stewart ... has two younger sisters, Amirakal and Heavyn, and a younger brother, Isaiah ... father played basketball at Calhoun Community College ... plans to major in Sports Medicine.

Head Coach Russ Huesman on Alphonso Stewart:
"We're excited about Alphonso. Coach Healy did an unbelievable job recruiting him, staying on top of him. This guy is an unbelievable wide receiver. I think we got a great addition to our football program. He can run, he's a big body guy. He played quarterback his senior year. Very, very athletic. He reminds me of Terrell Robinson as far as movement and playmaking ability. This kid was pretty heavily recruited. He had some really nice opportunities. He came up here on a visit and really fell in love with Chattanooga. We're excited to have them, and I know he'll do big things here at wide receiver for us."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Logan Teichmann - OL - 6-4 - 270 - Fr.-HS - Brentwood, Tenn. (Brentwood HS)

Chase is a student at UTC ... Undecided on a major.

Head Coach Russ Huesman on Logan Teichmann:
"Logan Teichmann is going to be good. Big bodied guy that can move. He had really, really great high school career. The connection started with Jack, his dad. Jack and I played together here at Chattanooga a long time ago. It's always nice when you can get former football player's sons because you know they had a great experience here, and they want their sons to have the same experience here. We think Logan is going to be really good. I think the thing about him is that he's very athletic, big framed, big bodied guy. He'll play offensive tackle for us. He had some opportunities to go elsewhere at the FBS level, and Logan chose Chattanooga. For him to pick us over the other places he picked says a lot about our program and our university just because of the connection he had. We're excited to have Logan, and he'll be a really good player here."."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hunter Townson - OL - 6-4 - 280 - Fr.-HS - Ider, Ala. (Ider HS)

Head Coach Russ Huesman on Hunter Townson:
"Hunter is enrolled in school here, going to class, he graduated high school early. Hunter committed to us a while back. I knew he wanted to graduate early. I knew he wanted to get somewhere in the spring. This guy had multiple offers elsewhere and made the decision to come to Chattanooga. Decided to stay local, wanted to be here, wanted to see his family and friends watch him play. I think he's going to be a future star for us, an All-Conference kind of guy. Him having the opportunity to get in here early in the spring will really help him out. It's nice when you can get the really, really good local players. I think Hunter is adjusting well, and we're thrilled to have him."."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lucas Webb - DB - 6-1 - 190 - Fr.-HS - Northport, Ala. (Tuscaloosa County HS)

Head Coach Russ Huesman on Lucas Webb:
"Lucas we watched on film. Very, very athletic. He's got a big range. He's a safety. We're looking for him to play free safety for us. He comes from a great football family. Dad played linebacker at Alabama. We just think Lucas has not come close to tapping his abilities. We think he has the potential to be a really, really good player for us. He can run, he's rangy, and comes from an athletic family. We're very, very fortunate to have him, and I think he's going to be a very good player."

Head Coach Russ Huesman on Davis Howell:
"Davis we've known about for a long time. Obviously a lot of people in the state of Tennessee have known about him. He broke the national high school record for receptions, and I think receiving yards. Again, he brings a toughness and work ethic to the position. Anybody that has that many catches, and has done that many things on the football field, I think will be a tremendous college football player. Again, great work ethic, great family. I was very impressed with his mom and dad when they came on the official visit. We're excited to have him. I think he'll do great things here."

David Morgan - LB - 6-2 - 215 - Fr.-HS - Chattanooga, Tenn. (Cleveland HS)

State ... plans to major in Education.

Head Coach Russ Huesman on David Morgan:
"We're excited to have David. What a great young man. Really, really good football player. We've seen him, and been around him for a long time. I think he's going to be a great addition for us. He brings something to the table. He's a bigger type of linebacker for us, and anytime you can get those 215s, 220s coming out of high school, that helps you. David is from a very athletic family. When you've got those blood lines, when your mom played college basketball, your father played college football and your brother is a former college basketball player, normally those genes are there, and you'll be really good."

1 point away from being a 2 star

Players are given points based on strengths, and then there is a range of points for each star. example 5-8 points=1 star 6-9 points=2 stars 10-14 points= 3 stars, etc. convington was one point away from falling into the 4 star bracket, which is no where near the 2 star bracket. but ill take a 3 star that passed up ACC offers anyday. :)

2 more recent signees. Including the nations all-time receptions leader.

Davis Howell - WR - 6-2 - 190 - Knoxville, Tenn. (Christian Academy)
All-American receiver from Christian Academy of Knoxville in Knoxville, Tenn. ... named 2012 Medium Schools All-American by MaxPreps.com ... national prep career record holder with 358 catches ... led the nation in 2012 with 143 catches ... totaled 1,947 receiving yards and 22 TDs as a senior ... three-time all-state for head coach Rusty Bradley ... two time state champion with a 28-2 record last two seasons ... played in the Tennessee East-West All-Star game ... PERSONAL ...full name is Davis Sears Howell ... born Feb. 19, 1995 ... son of Todd and Leigh Davis ... has an older brother, Walker, and two younger brothers, Nolan and Stewart ... father is the weatherman for Knoxville's NBC affiliate ... played in the Little League World Series as a youth ... plans to major in Business Entrepreneurship.

Two-time all-district at Cleveland High School in Cleveland, Tenn. ... played for head coach Ron Crawford ... played in the Tennessee East-West All-Star game following his senior year ... CHS Linebacker of the Year ... also lettered in basketball and soccer ... PERSONAL ... full name is David Isaiah Morgan .. born Feb. 18, 1995 ... son of Charles and Priscilla Morgan ... has an older brother, Jonathan Adams, who is the Director of Operations for Mocs basketball ... has an older sister, Michelle, who plays volleyball at Salem College ... father played football at Tennessee ... mother played basketball at N.C. State ... plans to major in Education.

All that is true about David Morgan...except I am 61 years old and went to Appalachian.

Not a statement, Erkel. It's a question. Questions cannot be factually incorrect.

Chatty hasn't finished in the top three in at least the last decade. They have, however, finished dead last a couple times. That means worse than WCU, El Cid, Sammy and Elon. And if you try to say 2010, I will remind you that the SoCon offerings to the playoffs that year were ASU, GSU, and Wofford.

Heck, Chatty has barely managed to finish ahead of El Cid better than half the time in that same 10 year stretch. That's real powerhouse tradition right there.

He is referring to 2010, when UTC finished in a 3-way tie for 3rd place with Elon and Georgia Southern. They were all 1-1 head-to-head but GSU had the best overall record, got the SoCon's third playoff spot and made a run to the semifinals.

Were they the third best team in the SoCon? No way, but they did technically finish in a tie for third in the standings.

I know. That's why I already mentioned 2010 in the earlier post. It is still not a top 3 finish when there are 3 teams ahead of you... even with theoretical math.

UTC was tied for 3rd in 2010 with GSU and Elon, but the tie breaker would go to who beat the #1 team (GSU beat App) and then to points allowed (UTC gave up the most). So after tie breakers UTC finished 5th.

But hey let's carryon with just believing Chattown vs. looking at the facts. Hey Chattown would you still like to claim UTC has the most SoCon championships overall?

Here's the measure of the powerhousedness of UTC:

Last went to playoffs: 1984 (when Chattown was still just a poopy stain)

Since that time:

The Citadel has been to the playoffs 3 times (running into GSU in the first round twice, unfortunately)
The Citadel has actually won a playoff game
The Citadel has won a SoCon championship
The Citadel has held a #1 ranking in the I-AA
The Citadel has won 6 GAMES vs FBS opponents, two of which are current SEC members

All this from little ole El Cid, outshining UTC since before Chattown knew how to spell "underachievement".

Really then how did they decide which team got the autobid for the playoffs this year when there was a three way tie? That tiebreaker by your logic would only apply to first place ties? Can I come live in your world?

There are tiebreaker rules you just don't like the results.

The wording was "When will UTC manage a top 3 SoCon finish?"

You finished behind two teams and tied with two others. If you want to take out the tiebreaker, and say that three teams that tied for third are all equal, fine. You tied for third in the conference but you did not "manage a top 3 finish" when there are four teams that had an equal or better record. Five teams can't finish in the top three of the SoCon.

The kid is a legit 4.33 flyer, solid student, yes sir no sir young man who comes from a great family. He didn't have a lot of yards since SP's offense features the FB, but he catches the ball well and if he gets a step he is gone. Devan was being recruited by Ga Tech, but due to some mis-communication between the school's academic counselor & GT it was discovered late he was short a specific core course. ASU said they wanted to sign 2 RB's but after losing Lincoln Stewart to Wofford and the SP HC telling me GT was out of the picture I tried my best to get ASU to look at him. Samford has lots of STARS, and it is thought to be one of our very best, if not THE best class ever(isn't everybody's today?) I'll spare you most of the accolades. A relatively small class since Samford has lots of returnees.

In alphabetical order:

JonAshley Amison - OL, 6-6, 260 Elba HS AL - Big mobile OL. All-State Honorable Mention.

Royus Amos - OL, 6-6, 280 Deerfield Beach HS FL - Mountain of an OL. Coaches thrilled to get him. FAU and Ark State were in the mix, and reportedly App State offered. Florida asked for a last minute official visit, but Amos decided against it.

Jamerson Blount - FS, 6-1, 170, Lincoln HS Tallahassee FL - First Team All-State Class 7A Florida, and a Rivals 2**. Had offers from FIU and App State.

Justin Cooper - LB, 6-2, 213, Fort Lauderdale FL - All-State and a Rivals 3*** out of high school. Cooper is a xfer from Texas Tech and is already enrolled at Samford.

Troy Forrest - TE, 6-4, 230, Cullman HS AL - Tall, strong TE who had 59 catches for 7 TDs. Three sport letterman.

Karel Hamilton - WR, 6-1, 180, Strawberry Crest HS, Valrico FL - Second Team All-State 6A. Plant City Observer POY. More good FL talent.

Jared Holloway - DE, 6-0, 275, St. Paul's HS, Mobile AL - First Team All-State, and a 2** on Rivals, Scout and 247. Offers from AFA, Army, others.

Ryan Hughes - OL, 6-5, 285, Plainview HS, Rainsville AL - Coaches expect Hughes to be a muscled 300+ OL in time. Had offers from JSU and Murray State.

Jamie Major - LB, 6-2, 224, Piedmont HS AL - Three Year All-State player, 3*** on 247, 2** on Rivals and Scout. Offers from WKU, JSU, La Lafayette, and others.

Albert Mitchell - QB, 6-3, 190, CPA Nashville TN - All-State in TN. Passed for 2,117 his Sr. year, and rated 2** on Rivals, 247 and Scout.

Drew Pederson - QB, 6-3, 195, Moorestown HS NJ - He was getting interest from several FBS schools after his Jr. year, but an injury robbed him of his Sr. campaign. Good DNA, as his dad, Doug, is the OC for the Chiefs, and spent several years in the NFL. May be a real steal for Samford. Preferred walk-on I think.

Sam Pettway - S, 6-0, 180 UMS-Wright HS, Mobile AL - All-State player for the last 2 years, who is a 2** on Scout and 247. Offers from Tulane, Marshall, and others.

Michael Pierce - DE, 6-0, 275 Daphne AL - Transfer from Tulane, already enrolled. Was MVP of the 6A state championship game against Hoover his Sr.year. Was named to the C-USA All-Fr. Team. A 2** Rivals and First Team All-State out of high school. This guy is a terror

Connor Rafferty - OL, 6-3, 285 Robinson HS, Tampa FL - Second Team All-State. A powerful OL who is a 3*** Scout, and a 2** Rivals and 247. Offers from La Tech, Buffalo, and (re-offered) from South Florida.

Javian Ramson - WR 6-2, 205 Muscle Shoals HS, AL. A 2** on Rivals, Scout, and 247. Big strong receiver who was offered by MTSU, La Tech, and others.

I love how the recruiting sites and the folks who supposedly know better (such as Southern Pigskin) always has Wofford ranked towards the bottom in terms of recruiting classes, but we consistently finish in the top 3 in the Socon for most of the past decade and with out a doubt there's a sense that we buck up our talent every year.

For instance, I'm certain that Furman has been consistently better on paper than we have in terms of recruitment with teams with stars, etc in the last few years but they have no playoff appearances or championships to show for it. the same can go for Western and Chattanooga.

This isn't a knock on said teams, I just think that the whole comparing of recruiting classes is bologna at this level.

Wofford plays a style of offense and defense that allows them to be successful vs. what some consider "more talented or athletic".

They do an excellent job recruiting their type of player and playing a disciplined brand of football. On paper Wofford doesn't have a top three class in the SoCon but I'd wager they finish in the top 3 two out of the next three years.

I'm tickled with this recruiting class. Coach Higgins seems to have hit his stride on recruiting and is getting some really good kids that are not only athletic, but also will fit in at El Cid ( which hopefully means less washouts during knob year). We seem to have snagged a lot of kids who had FBS offers. We also got a few who have TO experience in high school, including a QB who I believe was offered by Air Force.

Some teams do more with less talent. Y'all do. Doesn't mean y'all have better or equal athletes. Y'all are a very well coached team and that is more of the reason for y'all's record than raw talent, imo.

How many players have y'all had drafted in the NFL? Have y'all EVER had a player drafted in the NFL? (only source I can find says Wofford has had 0 players drafted all time)

It's not a knock on Wofford by any means... it's hard to recruit sought after high school players there.

But, the lack of draftable athletes should be a hint to you that your success does not come from athletic talent... but, from a disciplined, fundamental team.

Actually, Southern Pigskin has ranked Furman 8th or 9th virtually every year. This is the first time in some while that they are put as high as three. So, in that respect, Wofford has been consistently rated better in recruiting than Furman. Furman was rated quite highly back when they were a top ten program.

I do agree with your general premise, though, that the ratings and rankings are pretty arbitrary. Hard to know who will pan out, and who won't. I do think this is a very strong class for the Paladins, however.

Furman didn't so much focus on speed. They did bring in a couple of option quarterbacks who will convert to defensive back. Those boys can run. Still, Bruce Fowler is a Bobby Johnson acolyte. He's moving the team back towards power and physicality.

In particular, you see his focus on linebackers. Fowler was on the defensive staff back when Furman was producing the conference's top linebacking corps every single season. You continue to see the renewed focus at those positions.

Southern Pigskin falls flat again.....

9. Wofford

Total: 27

Two stars: 1

Top recruits: DB Nick Ward, DE Boston Bryant, WR Dakota Hopper

http://athletics.wofford.edu/news/2013/2/6/FB_0206134853.aspx

The Terriers have brought in one of their biggest classes in quite some time and the biggest in the conference. This year’s class is highlighted by the Brenton Bersin-like Dakota Hopper, DE Boston Bryant (who had 105 tackles and 859 rushing yards to go with 12 touchdowns during his senior season) and DB Nick Ward.

8. Elon

Total: 22

Two stars: 2

Top recruits: OL Dakota DeYent, DB Adrian Williams DB Asunji Maddox Jr.

http://www.elonphoenix.com/sports/2013/1/28/FB_0128134719.aspx?path=football

The Phoenix were able to gain a major piece for the future in OL Dakota DeYent and, with the addition of DBs Adrian Williams and Asunji Maddox Jr. – who is said to have a 30 inch vertical – have further solidified the conference’s top pass defense from a year ago. WR Demetri Allison looks like he could be a sleeper for Elon.

7. The Citadel

Total: 24

Two stars: 2

Top recruits: WR Jorian Jordan, LB Tevin Floyd, RB DeAndre Schoultz

http://www.citadelsports.com/sports/fball/2012-13/releases/2013020674i4y2

The Bulldogs went big this year in more ways than one. The highlight of their class could be their wide receivers, who measure in at 6’0, 6’2, 6’4 and 6’4 and include Jorian Jordan (947 yards, 12 TDs in senior season). If the Bulldogs are able to find a passing game to compliment their ground attack with these new recruits, watch out.

6. Western Carolina

Total: 19

Two stars: 5

Top recruits: DL Andrew Mayton, DB Fred Payne, RB Garry Lewis

http://www.catamountsports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/020613aaa.html

After his second go round with recruiting, Coach Mark Speir has yet another solid class under his belt in Cullowhee. Led by DL Andrew Mayton – North Carolina’s sack leader in 2012 with 23.5 – the Catamounts continue to build toward the future, which looks brighter by the day. Also, is there any more appropriate name for a defensive back than Payne? I’m looking at you Fred.

5. Samford

Total: 16

Three stars: 1

Two stars: 6

Top recruits: LB Justin Cooper, DB Sam Pettway, OL Connor Rafferty

http://www.samfordsports.com/news/2013/2/6/FB_0206133024.aspx?path=football

Coach Pat Sullivan called his 2013 class the “most balanced class we've had since we've been at Samford,” and it is not much of an exaggeration. The Bulldogs were able to get depth on the offensive line and some talent at defensive line and linebacker, led by Justin Cooper, a transfer from Texas Tech.

4. Chattanooga

Total: 17

Three stars: 1

Two stars: 7

Top recruits: DT Taylor Reynolds, RB Derrick Craine, OL Jacob Revis

www.gomocs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=17700&ATCLID=206283063

Coach Huesman welcomes a class that includes eight all-state selections, led by DT Taylor Reynolds, who was listed as one of the top defensive linemen in Alabama. QB Alejandro Bennifield could be the unsung hero of this group and the Mocs’ QB of the future, while RB Derrick Craine totaled 2,105 yards and 23 TDs during his senior campaign.

3. Furman

Total: 17

Three stars: 1

Two stars: 9

Top recruits: OL Aaron Black, DE James Elliott, LB Nic McBride

http://www.furmanpaladins.com/sports/m-footbl/2012-13/releases/20130206o4x6cf

After giving up nearly 400 yards of offense per game last season, the Paladins made a strong effort to improve their D, and it shows – 13 of their 17 recruits will be lining up on the defensive side of the ball. With DE James Elliott and DL Jordan Hawkins, the Paladins could have a D-line to fear in a few years.

2. Georgia Southern

Total: 23

Three stars: 3

Two stars: 3

Top recruits: DT Jay Ellison, DL Larry Matthews, RB Keshun Hill

http://gseagles.com/headlines/12704-gsu-announces-plan-for-signing-day-celebration

At Georgia Southern, they do not rebuild – they reload. The Eagles lose Brent Russell? They sign Jay Ellison, an All-State DT and Area Defensive Player of the Year. In fact, this year’s recruiting class includes four former Player of the Year award winners, most of which come at the running back position. Can you say loaded?

1. Appalachian State

Total: 16

Three stars: 6

Two stars: 10

Top recruits: DB Anthony Covington, LB Nathaniel Norwood, QB Taylor Lamb

http://www.goasu.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=21500&ATCLID=206288273

Coach Satterfield has put together one of the most impressive recruiting classes Appalachian State has seen in some time, as all of the 16 new players were given at least a two-star rating by Rivals.com. Former coach Jerry Moore called last year’s class “the best recruiting class in years.” This year’s class could challenge that title. And in case you were wondering, yes, QB Taylor Lamb is the son of former Furman quarterback and coach Bobby Lamb.

2 major things are wrong with Southern Pigskin's rankings. They just looked at the website to gather the star ranking data and not the recruiting sites. They failed to realize that this information may not be accurate. They used these rankings to rank the classes. Most folks are one star simply by receiving an D1 offer. App State gets a leg up because they have a rivals site and can assist in dictating who gets assigned what ranking.

Frankly, Georgia Southern should be #1 or #2 every single season. They have undeniable advantages in recruiting over every other school in the SoCon given location, academic restrictions, and the HOPE Scholarship.

I have not put a lot of thought into the last point, but I would be floored if GSU does not use that to their advantage. The bar to meet HOPE is relatively low (3.0 GPA in high school), and a school like GSU can undoubtedly use that to fund a player that they don't want to burn a scholarship on.

Maybe GSU folk can answer this question, but what does it mean to say Ellison was "area defensive player of the year." Georgia divides up their football by regions, not areas. I thought maybe he was voted Bi-City player of the year in Columbus, but that isn't the case either. He also wasn't the Region defensive player of the year (though it was another player for Harris County).

Good questions PF. "Area defensive player of the year" is probably a media award given out by a TV or radio station that covers a certain viewing area. The media around the Savannah area does the same thing.
What's interesting about the 1-AAAAA defensive POY is that he didn't make the 1st, 2nd, or even honorable mention all-region team.

You can't evaluate GSU's recruiting by stars because they are recruiting to a system. Their o-line, QB, and WR recruits will almost never have stars at their positions, but may be the perfect fit for the unique GSU system.

One other thiing that is noteworthy... As Monken has restocked the program's depth more and more freshmen are redshirting which is very healthy for the program. The GSU model as always been to recruit offensive linemen who have great mobility and can "play under a card table," athletes who are interchangable by position, and speed. Monken has stated repeatedly that he wants football players and great athletes, and that he'll figure out where to play them.

GSU has definitely used the HOPE to its advantage through the years as well.

Finally, if you look back over GSU's history, you'll note that an incredible number of great players were walk ons. For example, 2012's leading tackler John Stevenson (#41) was a walk on.

Not absolutely certain, but I think you nailed it. Seems like I read that some media outlet named him "all middle GA defensive player of the year". I wonder which ratings services Southern Pigskin uses for counting stars. I say that because one of our guys that follows recruiting really closely provided links that indicated that we had quite a few more than 3 guys with 2 stars. No big deal as far as I'm concerned as I don't expect many of our players on offense to get them due to not fitting the mold, but this does make me curious.

I guess that was my original thought, but the media in Hamilton is Columbus. They do one big production every year for the All Bi City team (which includes Harris County, the Columbus schools, and a couple of schools 'over the border'). You might be right, though.

During my younger days I played with a guy that was first team all state at linebacker and second team all region. Different crowd of folks voting. I'd be more inclined to consider the region voting more accurate, as that is usually done by coaches who have seen the players. The state wide stuff is a bit more comparing numbers, I think.

Did GSU report the "all area" distinction, or just SP?

Star rankings are fairly useless. They are biased toward players at larger schools, and biased towards players on winning teams. There are a lot of great athletes playing on bad teams at small high schools who get little love from the star ranking people.

In fact I am always suspect of FCS classes with a lot of "starred" players, as it suggest that the coaches are putting more emphasis on rating services than bread-and-butter recruiting. Rodney Alison recruited a lot of "starred" players and accomplished nothing.

Our official site doesn't dwell much on star ratings. My own previous post did, however, and just to set the record straight, Samford wound up with THREE players that rated 3*** and SEVEN 2**. Yes, they used what the team sites posted as far as star rating. Appalachian State's site posted the highest rating from the services. Other sites may have thought they were doing that, but in fact were not. Rivals alone rated 11 in the mocs class as 2 stars and that doesnt include the 3 star from 247. Without even looking at ESPN or Scout we should have 1 3 star and 11 2 stars.

Nope, you are incorrect.

In the real world most of us inhabit, the top 3 means the top 3. There cannot be 4 or 5 teams in a top 3.

That's why it is called a top 3 and not a top 4.

Because 3 is not equal to 4.

Because GSU, ASU and Wofford were in the top 3.

It really is that simple. In 2010, SoConSports actually lists UTC as #4 in the final standings. The only one here who is false is you.

I tend to put more weight in the opinion of the college coaches than anyone else. Who else a kid holds offers from is much more significant to me than how many stars he has by his name, although the star ratings are fun to look at.

I have not followed the other SoCon schools' recruiting enough to make a real judgement but I love Appalachian's class and the biggest reason is who else wanted the guys we signed. All 15 of the kids that committed held multiple other offers and 14 held FBS offers. The only signee who did not have an FBS offer was Brandon Pinckney, who was a SC Shrine Bowl participant with offers from Wofford, Furman and Elon.

It'll be a couple years before we know which class was truly the best but I have high hopes for our incoming freshmen.

I watched the highlight films, looked at the recruiting rankings, looked at the offer lists.

So that makes you better qualified to evaluate talent in a football player than the Head Coach of a Division 1 Football program?

You are dumber for thinking that tie breakers come into play for anything other than an autobid. Or even if a tiebreaker is used, that it changes the standing.

That is like saying A = B only when I say so. Good luck with that. Please continue to post. I know when you say anything the opposite is likely true.

If he didn't like what he saw he wouldn't have signed them. These weren't leftovers. These were guys we went after that had interest from other schools, including a couple Chattanooga showed interest in.

The margin is razor thin in the conference. I think you will soon find that out.

That's the one thing written in the past few pages we should all be able to agree on.

We found that out in 2012... GSU played 5 conference games last year that were decided by 8 points or less, and the 8 point margin was in double OT. GSU's two conference losses were by 2 and 3 points where GSU missed 2 and 3 FG's respectively from under 31 yards.

The funny thing about this recruiting thread is that with all the arguing over the relative strength of GSU class from one year to the next, signing a reliable kicker might be the biggest deal of it all based on the paragraph above, which might make the class great if that is the difference between going undefeated against FCS.

I noted that somewhere on one of these threads, but recruit rankings should contain a coaching element as well.

It really doesn't matter how fast you run the 40 if you don't have a coaching staff that will assist in your development.

Your class is great at the top. Ellison is one of the best prospects to ever sign in the socon. Thornton will be great in your system. But you guys signed a lot of guys that no one has ever heard of. And I mean no one. It smells as if you set your sights extremely high and recruited against the big boys. You won some battles but probably missed on a lot and were left with scraps.

Actually most of the players GS signed are rated by the major services. As far as the guys not being heard of I can tell you that these college coaches know all kind of players that they look at that aren't even rated by the services. GS recruits unique players for its style of offense so sometimes they do get some players that are off the beatn path. I think you can tell that they do a pretty decent job most of the time at GS getting and developing players.

Really the services are ridiculous as far as ratings go. Look at Georgia and Alabama. Bama is ranked 1 and Georgia was #10 yet if you look closely there isn't much difference in the quality of the classes. UGA had like fifteen 4 star and Bama had fifteen 4 star plus two 5 stars. There is such a fine between a 4 and 5 star. Georgia had more 3 stars than Bama. Yet they make it out like someone won the NC. Its ridiculous. The Atlanta Journal had an article out recently about this and showed that most NFL rosters have 3 star and many 2 star guys.

Just because some kid doesn't have a bunch of stars by his name doesn't mean a damn thing. There is way to much hype on this stuff. None of it matters until a kid gets there and proves himself and if your team doesn't win with these guys it really doesn't matter anyway does it?

Just because some kid doesn't have a bunch of stars by his name doesn't mean a damn thing. There is way to much hype on this stuff. None of it matters until a kid gets there and proves himself and if your team doesn't win with these guys it really doesn't matter anyway does it?

In the NFL, you get to play if you are actually a good football player, not because someone sitting behind a computer whose never played the game thinks you might be a good football player.

NFL teams draft busts all the time just like colleges recruit busts.

Their is a sharp drop off at every level in the star system for players that go on to play in the NFL. I believe it is something like 50 percent for 5 stars and well under 1 percent for 2 stars.

I actually think that Wofford is generally middle of the pack as far as talent goes, but they are the best coached, most disciplined team in the SoCon. I truely respect what Wofford is able to do on the field, I still hate the Terriers, but I respect them. I think App is head and shoulders above the rest of the SoCon in talent but GSU is closer than they used to be.

As for my Mocs we are light years ahead of where we were 4 years ago, but I will be disappointed with anything less than a playoff spot in 2013.

Watershed year for Huseman at UTC and Sullivan at Samford. I think both universities are much better than they used to be, but still need to validate some of that by reaching the post season. Unfortunately for both programs, you have a lot of baggage that may go with a coaching change, such as alienating your starting quarterback for one, and shipping off a state icon on the other.

Best coached, yes.

Most disciplined, no.

Means nothing because there are a thousand times the amount of 2 stars than 5 stars.

Might want to look at playoff wins since we dumped Hatcher. GSU is the class of the conference in talent. Monken closing the gap rapidly on Ayers as far as the best coach in the conference.

GSU is the class of the conference in talent.

That's a bold statement. People are going to be shocked at the difference in the squad App State puts on the field next fall. Not piling on JM, but we've had serious issues the last 4-5 years in a lot of areas. All that has been corrected.

Although I supported someone else to be ASU's HC Scott has done a lot of things to win me over. He brings a lot of intangibles to the table and his deep rooted passion for ASU is infectious. The class he just signed had 54 collective FBS offers. 13 were to CUSA and 11 to MAC schools. Only one signee did not have an FBS offer. While that in itself is no guarantee of success, it clearly indicates Scott has raised the bar in the quality of players he is going after. I believe it is also a clear indication ASU is headed somewhere else.

2 major things are wrong with Southern Pigskin's rankings. They just looked at the website to gather the star ranking data and not the recruiting sites. They failed to realize that this information may not be accurate. They used these rankings to rank the classes. With the exception of Georgia Southern, whom they stubbornly refused to drop lower than 2nd regardless of how mediocre their recruiting class is this year.

I just love this kind of stuff! Tell me how is it you know that GS recruiting class this year is mediocre? How do you base your opinion? Stars? Unless you have seen all their recruits play first hand and have years of experience recruiting or coaching football players than there is really no way for you to no. I could care less what GS class is ranked. All I know is that GS has always played at a high level and Monken has had his teams on the verge of another title since taking over. I think he knows what kind of players he wants, and I don't think he getting mediocre players because if he were they wouldn't be doing as well as they have.

Furman has fared pretty well at the Rock all time, but our all whites (even our helmets are white) have had little effect the past 10 years or so.
