Which games give the best chance for I-AA to shine over the big boys?

JMU skips the big boys this year, so I have no dog in the hunt. Like to hear everyone's thoughts on the best chances (aside from Richmond over Duke)...or maybe there are some even easier matchups than that.

Then you have an unbiased opinion. What's your guess for the upset?

Well, I am biased to the extent that I follow I-A very closely, which is pretty much the law if you grew up in Nebraska, as I did. So although, I am an alumns of two I-AA programs, I am realistic that upsets are highly uncommon.

There is a vast differential of size, strength, speed, and talent from the two divisions. I know that idea won't be popular here, but that is the reality.

My wish would be that I-AA could play more games with the Sun Belt Conf. and the bottom half of the WAC. Those would all be highly winnable games.

I would love UNH against one of those teams, but the reality is, dead coach or not, Northwestern went bowling last year and are not likely to struggle in that game.

I do like Richmond at Duke, though I do have concerns about their new QB.

Ideally, you want a strong, and EXPERIENCED I-AA team going against a weak I-A team that is breaking in a new QB or offensive or defensive scheme.

I say the best chances are (in no random order):

Richmond @ Duke (S.2)
So. Ill @ Indiana (S.16)
Cal-Poly @ SJ St. (S.23)
Nich. St. @ La. Tech (S.16)
Idaho St. @ Idaho (S.16)
Portland St. @ New Mexico (S.2)

Those are really the only games where it is even possible.

People dog teams like SMU, TCU, Cincy, Iowa St., etc. but these are teams that look to be decent, improved, or in the case of TCU, bowl bound. Any team that is competing for a bowl slot is very unlikely to face a challenge from a I-AA, as much as I'd like to wish otherwise.

Case in point, App. last year scored a combined 8 points against Kansas and LSU. Some may rightly point out that App. played LSU "tough" or "gave them a game" in the first half. True, but in the end they were shutout. And that App. team was very, very good. When JMU won 2 years ago, we played WVU in a lean season for them and we were happy to play them to 45-10.

At any rate, we shall all soon see for ourselves. Cant wait!

Well, I am biased to the extent that I follow I-A very closely, which is pretty much the law if you grew up in Nebraska, as I did. So although, I am an alumns of two I-AA programs, I am realistic that upsets are highly uncommon.

There is a vast differential of size, strength, speed, and talent from the two divisions. I know that idea won't be popular here, but that is the reality.

My wish would be that I-AA could play more games with the Sun Belt Conf. and the bottom half of the WAC. Those would all be highly winnable games.

I would love UNH against one of those teams, but the reality is, dead coach or not, Northwestern went bowling last year and are not likely to struggle in that game.

I do like Richmond at Duke, though I do have concerns about their new QB.

Ideally, you want a strong, and EXPERIENCED I-AA team going against a weak I-A team that is breaking in a new QB or offensive or defensive scheme.

I say the best chances are (in no random order):

Richmond @ Duke (S.2)
So. Ill @ Indiana (S.16)
Cal-Poly @ SJ St. (S.23)
Nich. St. @ La. Tech (S.16)
Idaho St. @ Idaho (S.16)
Portland St. @ New Mexico (S.2)

Those are really the only games where it is even possible.

People dog teams like SMU, TCU, Cincy, Iowa St., etc. but these are teams that look to be decent, improved, or in the case of TCU, bowl bound. Any team that is competing for a bowl slot is very unlikely to face a challenge from a I-AA, as much as I'd like to wish otherwise.

Case in point, App. last year scored a combined 8 points against Kansas and LSU. Some may rightly point out that App. played LSU "tough" or "gave them a game" in the first half. True, but in the end they were shutout. And that App. team was very, very good. When JMU won 2 years ago, we played WVU in a lean season for them and we were happy to play them to 45-10.

At any rate, we shall all soon see for ourselves. Cant wait!

I don't know if this will be an upset, but Croom better get them to .500 at least this year or he's gone... Miss state has had no more than 3 wins since 2000 and last year they beat Murray State, Tulane and Ole Miss.. Not exactly murderor's row!

How about Missouri State over the OSU Cowboys...last time we played we took them to the very first overtime ever played in college football history...they finished with only 3-4 wins that year...they are again picked last in the Big 12...Missouri State returns what hopes to be a high powered offense under new head coach Terry Allen, the same coach who lead UNI to its many Gateway championships in the 90's...our only ? is the defense and QB...neither QB fighting for the starting job has thrown a pass at this level...we have what could be the best linebacker core in the nation...a quality secondary but our Dline absolutely sucks...put 0 pressure on the QB last year...but our new D-cord promises a new attacking scheme...cant wait for the season to start...OSU has a good running game and what sounds to be a quality QB and Dline but has troubles in all other areas...should be a decent game...we had Arkansas "on the ropes" last year...only down 11 going into the last minute of the third quarter and getting ready to score again but we throw a pic...ended up losing 49-17...just ran out of gas...

I am sorry. You guys had a hell of a team last year, but I simply have to disagree with you. Look at the past history. Average I-A teams blow the doors off of most any I-AA team. Of course, there are always the random upsets that we can point to. Even those are fun and we love them, they are definately the EXCEPTION rather than the RULE.

Aside from the UC DAVIS game, the only I-AA team to win over a I-A last year was NW St. edging out Louisiana-Monroe, a doormat of the pathetic Sun Belt Conference.

Dont get me wrong. I like I-AA football. I dont have to believe it is competitive with the big boys to like it. It is just a different level of football. In reality, I-AA will be lucky to win 5 of the 70+ games against I-A (most of which are not against Top 25 teams).:twocents:

Absolutely it was an abnormality. The problem this year is that you don't have a lot of matchups featuring great I-AAs and soft I-As. If App was playing Duke instead of NC State, I'd be apt to pick App.

If Ohio was playing JMU instead of Tenn.-Martin, I'd probably give JMU a real good shot.

I should add Southern Illinois-Indiana to my "most likely" list. There's a pretty good shot of that one happening.

Bold are games I consider winnable, even if its the slimest of chances. Italics are games that might be just out of reach for a win, but will be alot closer than most expect IMO. There aren't alot of favorable matchups for the IAA. My guess is 4 to 6 wins with alot of close calls for the IA.

Here's a little perspective fer ya:

Current teams in the GFC have won six I-AA championships, the most recent in 2002. They are the only conference to have 50% of their league in the playoffs in one year, just two years ago--2003. 50% of the conference is in the consolidated preseason top 25 this year.
