WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama says he's a football fan but that if he had a son, considering the impact the game has on its players, he would think long and hard before allowing his son to play.

Obama tells The New Republic that football fans are going to have to wrestle with the fact that the game will probably change over time to try to reduce the violence.

The president says that some of those changes might make football, in his words, "a bit less exciting" but that it will be much better for players.

"And those of us who are fans maybe won't have to examine our consciences quite as much," he said.

And as something as significant...

You read some of these stories about college players who undergo some of these same problems with concussions and so forth and then have nothing to fall back on. That's something that I'd like to see the NCAA think about.

Thoughts?

Teddy Roosevelt he is not. But using your head as a weapon should have severe penalties. They even called spearing when I was in high school. I'm not sure when launching your helmet into the opponent became fashionable. Not worth breaking your neck or becoming a quadrapalegic doing it. Some changes should be made at all levels.

But I'd still let my son play football.

I do agree that the concusssion issue should be looked at closely, but this is another subtle way of Obama telling us they he knows better than we do, and he will make our decisions for us.

Leather helmets, or no helmets. Guys won't be flying around leading with their heads if they think they might lose an eye or an ear.

I blame Teddy Roosevelt.

I really think if we went back to the leather helmets, a lot of these head issue would go away. The focus would return to using the shoulder and arms to tackle. Yes, there will still be some head injuries, but ever since the hard pastic shell was developed and coaching began "using it" ("Stick your head right in the numbers!!!!!"--I heard that for years.). Look at the horrendous tackling we see--especially at the pro level. Guys just launch themselves at a RB/WR, never trying to wrap up--just knock the snot of him and think he'll fall down.
