BALTIMORE (AP) -- Loved in Baltimore long after he ended his Hall of Fame career, Earl Weaver remained an Oriole to the end.

The notoriously peppery Hall of Fame manager died at age 82 on a Caribbean cruise associated with the Orioles, his marketing agent said Saturday.

The Duke of Earl, as he was affectionately known in Baltimore, took the Orioles to the World Series four times over 17 seasons but won only one title, in 1970. His .583 winning percentage ranks fifth among managers who served 10 or more seasons in the 20th century.

He was a character. Hated to bunt, a big believer in the three run homer. Like with Billy Martin, people would come to watch the fireworks- during the game.

Earl had a great line about former American League umpire Ron Luciano, with whom he had a running feud for years.

When Luciano retired to become a color commentator on the baseball game of the week, they asked Earl what he thought about that.

Earl said, 'I hope he is better at this job than he was at his last one."

That clip on Earl was great. I liked the ump firing back at him.

One of my tomcats is named Earl. He isn't feisty, though.

That did make me laugh out loud- it was a good comeback.

A real classic 'mold breaker' was Weaver. RIP

He was schedule to sign at a show here in April, with Ripken, Murray and Frank Robinson.

He once told an elderly waitress at a Twin Cities steakhouse to get him the check before she died.

RIP Little Genius

Was that at Murray's? I'll have to listen this morning to see what Sid Hartman has to say about him.

Reusse told that story, but I don't think it was Murray's.

Reusse was at the D2 semifinal in Mankato. He had a hard time going down the steep steps of Blakeslee Stadium- he is getting old. My seat is right by the door of the press box- I got to talk to the raspy one on his way out. He is a classic himself.

He repeated the story again today, Charlies was the place, only about getting seated. He also said one patron, after listening to Weaver drop the F-bomb all evening, asked Weaver if he ate out of that mouth.
