NEWARK — Dave Cohen never got the chance to finish what he started as head coach at Hofstra.
The Pride seemed primed to turn the corner under Cohen when Hofstra dropped football for economic reasons weeks after the end of the 2009 season, his fourth since leaving his defensive coordinator post at Delaware.
By that time, Cohen had overseen significant improvements in Hofstra’s facilities, funding and academic performance. The Pride were 7-4 in 2007, when Cohen was an Eddie Robinson candidate for the top coach in FCS.
Rebuilding with younger rosters and aiming for a future that never came, Hofstra went 9-14 during Cohen’s final two seasons.
“We were doing it the right way,” said Cohen, who was particularly proud of significant Academic Progress Rate improvements. “We inherited a struggling program, and we were about to win with great kids.”
When Cohen left Delaware, he referred to the Blue Hens coaching position as his “dream job,” never expecting to see it become available.
But when K.C. Keeler was dismissed Monday in a move that surprised many, including Cohen, who said he felt bad for Keeler, the position suddenly was open again.
“Am I the biggest name guy?” Cohen said. “Probably not. But I might be the best fit.”......

Cohen is a great coach imo. He would do fantastic being back at UD imo. I could not be more pleased with Moorhead but would have wanted Cohen if we didn't get Coach M.

Most UD Fans feel Cohen would be a good choice. He was a top notch DC when he was at UD before and probably our top recruiter. He has a ton of energy, is a positive type guy and the respect of his players. Really wants this job as well.

Eh, I'd take Cohen over Brock. Hofstra was never particularly impressive though, not sure how I feel about that.

Just my own personal opinion, nothing more, but all of the candidates I have heard seriously mentioned are underwhelming to me.

So the aim of "reinvigorating the base" was just empty words, it sounds like...

I'm a football fan, I needed no invigoration. But the coaches most mentioned have been...
Ryan Carty from UNH: (Stealing this from BHBK)
Carty has been at UNH for 6 years, this past year as the OC. Here's their playoff history in those 6 years & how many points they scored in their "bow-out" games:
2012 - Wofford - 7pts (actually were shutout as the TD was scored by the defense)
2011 - Montana St - 25 pts (that blocked PAT cost them)
2010 - UD - 3pts (most of you saw that game on TV - wusses)
2009- VU - 7 pts
2008 - UNI - 34pts
2007 - UNI 33pts (they softened them up for us the following week)

Rutgers OC Dave Brock kind enough to return my inquiries today but said he couldn't discuss #BlueHens vacancy. #strongcandidate #CAAFB
Go here and look at everyone at Rutgers saying how Brock is among the worst of the worst and needs to be fired...

Or the comments from this article...

And then there is Dave Cohen... 18-27 overall as a head coach, best season was 7-4, never had a winning record in conference play... As the defensive coordinator at Western Michigan:
2012: #61 overall defense, 2011: #104 overall defense, 2010: #75 overall defense
Not inspiring a lot of faith in me.

Carty doesn't have the experience to be a HC yet. I agree, Brock seems awful. Cohen was on the UD staff in the '03 season when we had a killer defense, so that's positive, and even '04 was solid, '05 not so much...
I'd like to see Mike Drass get some consideration, he's been doing some great things at Wesley.
Trying to nab Brian Scott from ODU would also make me happy.

I know someone who played for Cohen @ Fordham, thought he was erratic (being kind).
Delaware can do better. He should be strictly default choice.

But Cohen's defense isn't stingy, in his time at Western Michigan the defense has been consistently bad.
2012 - #74 (t) in points allowed
2011 - #76 in points allowed
2010 - #51 in points allowed
And in his time at Northeastern:
2009: #116 in points allowed
2008: #86 in points allowed
2007: #64 in points allowed
2006: #93 in points allowed
The best year he ever had, and the only year his defense finished in the top half in points allowed, was 2010 when he came in with someone else's recruits and the defense started sliding afterwards.
