Groundbreaking set for new sports facility

Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez will be joined by community leaders, alums and athletes Thursday as the University takes a major step for its athletics program—the groundbreaking for the Broad Athletic Facility.

The 26,000 square-foot field house is the first component of the multi-faceted Alex G. Spanos Sports and Recreation Complex.

The Eli and Edythe L. Broad Foundation is providing a $2 million leadership gift for this new field house, which is designed for intercollegiate athletics.

All media are invited to join Sacramento State on Thursday, Aug. 24 at 10:30 a.m. at the south end of Hornet Stadium. Speakers will include:

Alexander Gonzalez
President, Sacramento State
Holly Tiche
President, Placer Ranch—a Broad Project
Terry Wanless
Sacramento State Athletic Director
John Gesek
Alumnus, two-time Super Bowl winner
Tyson Butler
Linebacker, Sacramento State Football Team
Groundbreaking ceremonies will also include special appearances by the Sac State Cheer Squad, Dance Team, Hornet Football Team, and Herky the Hornet.

Credentialed media are cleared to park in the Alumni Center Parking Lot, off Highway 50 and Howe Avenue.

Congrats. It looks like an impressive facility. When is it scheduled to be ready?

Summer '07. They want it up pronto for recruiting. It's fully funded, so it should go up quickly, pending any early winter weather.

Should be a real nice addition. That area was alway the most boring part of the stadium. Look forward to seeing it at next year's causeway. Will they move the inflatible hornet to that side of the stadium?

Hopefully it'll be built better than most KB Homes, though. ;)

The most boring?! That was the beer garden

At least we had a beer garden :hurray:

BTW, yes they will probably move all of that stuff to the south end of the stadium. Of course our band will now do the tunnel that way too.

How can a beer garden be boring? The Broad will be on the south end and the RWEC will be on the north end of the stadium. Our bowl is starting to take shape. :hurray:

I thought the beer garden was that grassy area on the southeast corner? The fieldhouse is going to the southwest where they used to throw the extra porta-potties and some crappy concessions. I used to have my eyes on the scantily-clad hornet ladies more than the design of hornet stadium so maybe I am way off. Either way, the Broad and the RWEC should make the stadium much more attractive.

By "stadium," you mean two rickety temporary grandstands parked on either side of a football field, behind a track

Well, you've had a "temp" stadium for the past 50 years. What's your point? At least they have replaced the flooring three years ago from the wooden panels Anderson put there in 1992.

Yep and we're building a new one now. You're not getting a new one in the next ten years

No, we'll just renovate ours in the next 10. We have done more with renovating our football facilities in the last 15 than you have in the past 50. Nice to the farmers come into the 21st century over there in Methaneville by finally upgrading.

Yeah a dirt bowl, in other words, something actually resembling a stadium, where the fans will be right up close. I foresee players changing in the locker rooms at the north end of the stadium but I guess they could go to the ancient rec hall if they really want to
