View Full Version : Bob Nielson to be named Western Illinois Head Coach

Minnesota-Duluth Head Coach and AD, Bob Nielson, is expected to be named the new Western Illinois Head Coach at a press conference at 2 PM (Central) today.

Nielson was the HC at Minnesota-Duluth from 1999-2003 (getting them into the Div. II playoffs), then stepped down as HC to become the AD. He stepped back into the role of HC in 2008 and then proceeded to make the playoffs every year for the next 5 years, winning two Div. II national championships. Prior to that, he coached Div. III teams Wartburg and Wisconsin-Eau Claire to playoff spots. His record at UM-D was 100-26 (.794).

Nielson is originally from Iowa, received his Bachelors degree from Wartburg (Waverly, IA) and Masters from Northern Iowa.

Minnesota- Duluth is a fairly elite program in D2 and Bob will be a great addition to a struggling Western Illinois program.

Great get for WIU. Have been to many UMD games in the last two years. My brother currently goes to UMD and said he will surely be missed.

Great hire for Western Illinois. It's clear that this coach is a consistent winner that can turn things around pretty quickly. The MVFC just got a little stronger!

Nielson is a great coach. Two national titles. His teams ran the ball and played really tough nosed defense. UMD will miss him- WIU should be happy to have him.

I know that I am, and judging by the response from our own message boards, most Leathernecks fans share my opinion.
