Kent Austin returning to CFL after three seasons at Cornell.

He had another CFL offer at the end of last year, but elected to stay in Ithaca. Cornell began 2012 with high expectations, but had a very disappointing season.

Cornell was more inconsistent than bad, but you have to be concerned as an Ivy League fan that he appeared to prefer a CFL gig over Ivy League football.

Big Red lost to Penn, Brown, and Fordham each by a touchdown.

Insert boilerplate "Ivy League should participate in the FCS Playoffs" rant here.

He turned down another CFL job reportedly worth $500,000 at the end of 2011 as well. For whatever reason, he's taking the job this time.

And the CFL is still professional football. It's not like Princeton losing Sydney Johnson to Fairfield.

We're having a good time with uninformed specualtion as to his replacement on the Ivy Football Board. Names thrown out so far-- Tom Gilmore, Kevin Kelly, Don Brown, and Bill Lazor (a former Cornell QB).

Best wishes to him anyway, it appears that he didn't like the restrictions of Ivy League football (e.g. no playoff participation).

I'm sure he hated the playoff ban, like we all do.

But in his tenure at Cornell, it was kind of a moot point.

Footballscoop reporting that Cornell will promote TE coach and Cornell alum David Archer (not the former NFL QB) to head coach.

If true, Archer should be one of the youngest HCs in league history.

I NEVER understood the Sydney Johnson move... he cried after Princeton lost to Kentucky for Pete's sake! What was the story there?

Conventional wisdom on the Ivy boards is that 1) Fairfield gave Johnson some more money and 2) Johnson wanted to get out before Harvard became the league juggernaut in mens hoops.
