You would think that he could hook up somewhere. Seems like the Packers are pretty high on him.

As a Packer fan, I hope he makes it even on the practice squad. A few years of polish, I think he could be an impact NFLer, and I would rather have him on my team than the opponent.

I noticed there is another recent free-agent signing on the Packer's roster that is listed (along with Hunter) as jersey number 57. Does that suggest anything about Hunter's chances?

Still looking the part! I played with and watched Jason a couple years and watched him this past year. He was so raw when got to App, and didnt play as a junior. He has a tremendous upside, being that he has only played 4 years(1 year in HS) of organized football. With a patient staff, and solid fundamental improvement, he could become a great pro

The Packers probably would prefer to keep rookie defensive end Jason Hunter on the practice squad and develop him for a year. Plus, the Packers have 12 draft picks and at least three other rookie free agents in addition to Hunter – tackle Josh Bourke, running back Arliss Beach and safety Tra Boger – in the hunt for roster spots. How many rookies can one team keep?

But Hunter might have won himself a spot Saturday night on the final 53-man roster. He tipped a pass that defensive tackle Johnny Jolly intercepted, made two tackles, had at least one pressure and helped chase the quarterback on another play that resulted in a sack. Once that tape circulates around the league, the Packers will be taking a risk if they put Hunter on waivers. He was timed at 4.49 in the 40-yard dash on his pro day at Appalachian State and every team in the league is desperately searching for that kind of speed on the edge.

Whatever the Packers decide to do with him, I worry not about Jason Hunter. Not because I don't wish him the best, but just because I'm pretty sure the dude is going to find a spot somewhere and all homerism aside, I think he has quite a future ahead of him in the NFL. Technique can be taught and learned, but the sort of freak athleticism and heart that he has cannot be.

BTW, I thought Ingle's comments were pretty awesome. It's nice to see that bygones are bygones. Ingle's a classy dude, and I'm glad that I can finally start rooting for him :D

You think those two ever sit down and share stories? I know Hunter has a good one about causing a "fumble" in the semi finals game :)

I know I remember seeing Ingle run right past JH like he was standing still in the game at Furman that same year.

They can probably both put a proverbial feather in their proverbial hat. We were lucky to see both of those guys play football.

It's gonna be tough for the Packers, because with the speed he has shown, you know other teams are gonna be looking for someone like Hunter after a couple of weeks and some guys get banged up.

Wasn't a "fumble," it was a fumble.

Undrafted rookie emerges as possible backup as speed rusher

Green Bay - The Green Bay Packers' long search for another speed pass rusher has opened the door ever so slightly for long-shot Jason Hunter to make their final roster.

Few NFL teams have two effective outside rushers, so the Packers are hardly in the minority in their unfulfilled quest to find a niche player to pair with Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila on passing downs.

Aaron Kampman is the No. 1 outside rusher in the nickel and dime pass defenses, with Michael Montgomery as No. 2. But neither is a pass-rush specialist, which is something the Packers have been trying to develop since 2001, when Gbaja-Biamila — then a second-year pro who didn't start a game — recorded 13½ sacks.

"It would help (to find a second speed rusher)," cornerback Charles Woodson said Saturday.

"If we don't, we'll just have to get it other ways, either bringing a (cornerback) or bringing an outside (linebacker) or whatever."

Hunter is the only player on the roster with a shot at a speed-rushing role, though he has much to prove in the last two preseason games. If he doesn't earn a spot on the 53-man regular-season roster, he could wind up on the eight-man practice squad.

The undrafted rookie from Division II :bang: :bang: Appalachian State has emerged from a nondescript first week of training camp to give himself a chance.

In college, the 6-foot-4 Hunter played defensive end at only 230 pounds. He had 24 sacks in college, including 13 sacks in 15 games last season.

Now weighing about 255, he has the lanky build of many of the new breed of NFL speed rushers.

Early in training camp, Hunter looked like another undersized rusher who didn't have the explosiveness and leverage to beat the athletic behemoths at left tackle in the NFL. In one-on-one pass-rushing drills, the tackles consistently stopped Hunter in his tracks as soon as they got their hands on him.

However, Hunter has improved dramatically in the last couple of weeks and has found ways to get around the edge on occasion.

"Just learning more technique," he said Saturday. "When you go against good competition that many times, you adapt to it."

To win a spot on the roster, Hunter must prove he can get pressures and sacks in games. He caught the Packers' eye against Atlanta last week by getting two quarterback pressures and tipping another pass that defensive tackle Johnny Jolly intercepted.

"I think I've got a good shot," Hunter said. "I don't want to be too confident and say I've got it.

"I just feel, after being here and having this experience, if I didn't (make it), I'd leave here knowing I held my own against some of the top competition in the world. I could take my skills from here and polish them up and go play anywhere. I have the talent and work ethic."

"He was the guy you had to game-plan for because at our level he was very, very dominant," said Packers rookie quarterback Ingle Martin, who played at Furman. "The last play of my college career he knocked the ball out of my hands and that was it."

Observations on the game

1. The packers suck:bawling: :bawling: :bawling: :bang: :bang:

2. Ingle did not play, was hopeing to see him after the storm delay

3. Hunter had a tackle on a kick off, and came out of nowhere to put a knocker on a RB. He looked good and should make the roster.

4. The O-line looks bad, a defender made it through on every snap:bang:

5. My big question is completing this sentence "With the first pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers Select..........."

I saw Hunter's hit on the kick off. It was a good one. Not long into the third quarter, I decided it wa not worth staying up to watch. Actually I decided that early in the first half but stayed up anyway

Yeah, I stayed up just so I could check out Hunter. He did look good out there. Definitly hustling. I wish they would of played Ingle too. Lets hope one of the two gets a roster spot.

The Green Bay Packers made several roster moves to reduce their roster to the NFL-mandated limit of 75 active players. The transactions were announced Tuesday by Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General
Manager and Director of Football Operations.

First, the team claimed kicker E.J. Cochrane off waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles. A 5-foot-11, 204-pound rookie from Montana State, Cochrane originally signed as a non-drafted free agent with the Falcons in February. He had signed with Philadelphia in April and connected on one of his two field-goal attempts, as well as his only PAT try, in 2006 preseason action.

Released Tuesday were fullback A.J. Cooper, long snapper Thomas Gafford, wide receiver Chad Lucas, defensive end Montez Murphy, defensive tackle Jerome Nichols, wide receiver Calvin Russell, cornerback Jerron Wishom and quarterback Brian Wrobel.

In addition, the Packers placed linebacker Kurt Campbell and safety Marviel Underwood on injured reserve.

What do they get down to, 55?

The release of Wrobel at QB has to help Ingle Martin, though I have heard that Ingle is a pretty solid No. 3 right now. The Packers like the fact that Ingle can punt, as well as play QB. Perhaps he will be another Tom Tupa.

I've also heard through the grapevine that Hunter has a solid chance to make the opening day roster. He apparantly has opened a lot of eyes, though he is still raw on the technique side (he's only played football since his senior year in high school and missed a year of college eligibility, due to academic problems).

At least App fans have something to be happy about today. Hunter was not cut by the Packers.

Interesting dialog on Jason Hunter. I think the folks in Green Bay would be surprised, if they give Hunter more of a chance. One sack on the year from KGB is pretty sorry. As bad as my Packers are this year, they should be going totally with young players (apologies to Brett Favre, but get Rodgers and Ingle Martin in there, too).

Hunter has gotten way bigger in the NFL, he is now around 265lbs. He still has got the speed since he has only put on muscle. OHHHHH MANN he can be the next Kearse. The amazing things a full time nutrionist can do for you!
