I hope that they start it up again. Any guess as to what football conference they might get into?

Options include the Pioneer (non-scholarship, members in midwest and one on the West Coast and Northeast), Big South (relatively new league, should be competitive for autobid if they go scholarship) and SoCon (where they used to be before they canned football).

If ETSU were to bring back football, I could see the Bucs coming back to the SoCon very easily.

I wonder if they will restart scholarship football?
If they do restart football, they need to find a way to play outside.

Question that probably deserves a thread:
I've noticed that teams starting up football tend to be in the South. Teams that have dropped football are on the coasts. There used to be all kinds of teams in California- Fullerton, Long Beach, Pacific- and all kinds of teams in the Northeast- Boston U, St. John's, Iona. Western Washington dropped the sport.
Even in the Midwest there have been teams started in St. Scholastica and Presentation. The goal was to get more males into these predominately female schools.
Why the difference in regions? Obviously this group is interested in football or we wouldn't be on here, but there must be opinions.

December 5th, 2012, 08:20 PM
The difference is simply a matter of getting the line up through the X number of approval committees.
In the south, football is so important that schools will actually spend good money to get the sports. Most other places don't like to spend that kind of money.
Take Alabama for instance: they won't even allow the lottery in the state, good money that could help rural schools survive.
But you're GD right they'll pay Nick Saben $10 million a year to make sure the Tide are in the BCS title game.

Mississippi and Georgia have casinos. Georgia has a state lottery.
It's money that can be used for schools.
Once the old whites in power die out (can't come soon enough), the state will be dragged kicking and screaming to progress by the new, young policy makers who take their place. And I will be grinning ear to ear.

Why should you care about the domestic politics of States which you don't reside in and have no ties to. Alabama will do what she wants and as a Sovereign State she has the right to do. It would behoove outsiders to quit meddling in the domestic affairs of the Southern States. as..........

If you consider no turf an upgrade then yes, they have upgraded it. I spend some time over there working with their baseball team and sports science department. It is just the basketball floor and some indoor tennis court facilities. There's an indoor track and indoor baseball workout equipment, but no indication that football was ever played there.
I think they just upgraded their soccer complex and I could see them maybe expanding that.
Funny, I saw a shirt in the grocery store the other day that said ETSU Football: Undefeated since 2003.

I always wondered why they played indoors, seemed odd. It would make a nice practice facility, could probably be used by your other sports as well. Getting ETSU back in the SoCon would be fine with me, I'd much rather have them than Presbyterian or Gardner-Webb. They've got history with the conference and it is such an easy drive from ASU. If we are still around, I'd welcome the opportunity to travel to a road game and stay in Boone.

That stadium is only a couple of years old too. It's a ways from campus, but it could serve as a temporary site while they built something on or close to campus.
I was listening to the radio this morning and they were interviewing the head of the task force. It doesn't sound like they are pursuing the non-scholarship route. One of the main topics was Title IX compliance and the detailed report apparently deals with those issues and gives possible sports that could be added to comply with Title IX. There was also mention of hopefully being invited to the SoCon.

I've been following ETSU's steadfast support for bringing back football since the president (as was mentioned) pretty much did it in by presidential fiat. Every year for the last (six, at least?) years there have been alumni and some students clamoring for its return at any level. If Buc Football comes back, it could be a textbook for any alumni organization who is serious about starting or re-starting football. I do know the key is continuous, multi-year support.

I feel good for the ETSU Football Foundation. They've gone through some dark years and have been shunned and at times blacklisted by thier own school.
I went to the Mini Dome last year for the ASU/ETSU basketball game and it was sad to see. Student interest was completely dead. Some did show up, but most just conversated behind the bleachers like it was high school. The Dome itself is a fading relic of a past generation. Ceiling tiles were hanging down, one side of the building was deemed unsafe for public use and the hallways were dark and unsanitary. That building badly needs to be destroyed.

Expand that to D-II/III/NAIA and I bet it's a net negative rather than positive.

That dates back to when the University of North Alabama christened the Mini Dome by beating the pee out of ETSU 37-21 but it wasn't nearly as bad as the 36-0 trouncing of Middle Tennessee State 3 years later.

A few others but not that many - Swarthmore, UMass-Lowell, UMass-Boston, Ramapo, Brooklyn, Upsala (college is closed).
http://www.nationalchamps.net/Helmet_Project/past.htm
Mansfield dropped varsity but started Sprint Football.
A lot more programs seemed to go under in the 1945-55 period. If you figure that the MAAC programs were run like D-III, only BU, Hofstra and Northeastern were major programs that shut down since current players were born. If Albany and Stony Brook start to be thought of at the same level it'll pretty much be a wash - not nearly the collapse that's been implied. The fading of the Ivy League is another contributor to that image.

True that. Interestingly, I'm reading "When Saturdays Mattered Most" right now, and in there is revealed (in another context) one of the more underreported reasons why football programs were croaking from 1945-1955. Namely, it was an era of mass substitutions when the larger schools were simply fielding tons of athletes and subbing them in and out to keep them fresh. Teams like Fordham, Georgetown and the like, who relied on a squad of 10-12 great ironmen with no "depth" to compete, like the "Seven blocks of Granite", suddenly couldn't. It wasn't the only reason, but it had to be a big one.
By the mid-1950's there was a return to "ironmen football" and smaller squad sizes, but it was too late.

Could not agree anymore. When I was at ASU, Chancellor Borkowski made a statement that Owens Field House was the worst dressing room in the SoCon. With all due respect to the Chancellor, I submit that the Mini Dome was the worst football stadium in the SoCon (quite possibly the worst in FCS).

Not for Georgetown--it was carrying 81 scholarship players at the time.
The schools that dropped football during this period had three common characteristics: 1) urban schools mostly playing in rented professional stadiums, where the growth of the NFL were overshadowing the college product, 2) failure to promote the product to fans unconnected with the school, relying almost exclusively on walk-up tickets to fund the program, and 3) college presidents who sought to burnish their academic street cred (to use a decidedly non-1950's term) by closing down teams as an act of administrative will.

Not contesting these facts you've brought up - I agree with them all - but the 81 scholarship athletes were something that was unsustainable, too, financially for a school like Georgetown (and other religious-based schools like Xavier, Fordham, etc.) Certainly that was one big cost to go with 1), and it coincided with the rise of the big programs who were using that overpowering formula to crush the competition. In the 1930s, you could have a tiny squad and compete with anyone. In 1950, suddenly you needed 80-100 scholarship athletes just to get in the game.
Certainly presidents put their foot down, too. Some went as far as to call football "indentured servitude" to the school and thus opposed football for moral reasons - and it didn't help that football did best in the Jim Crow south, either.
