Brian Jenkins, who has led Bethune-Cookman to a 27-8 record over the past three seasons, is one of six semifinalists for the top job at Southern University, according to a source with knowledge of the search.

Dawson Odums, who went 4-5 as the Jaguars’ interim coach this season after SU ended the Stump Mitchell era, is among the other leading candidates. Longtime college assistants John Hendrick and James Spady are other semifinalists.

Athletic Director William Broussard declined Sunday night to identify candidates by name but said that Southern has narrowed its seach to six people, adding that SU plans to reveal the names of at least four semifinalists Monday.

Wonder if HFIII would be on the list. Would be interesting to see what he could do at a more well-established program.

DAYTONA BEACH -- Southern University athletic director William Broussard said he views Bethune-Cookman's Brian Jenkins as more than a football coach and is “certainly interested'' in him as a candidate for the Jaguars' coaching position.

“He's more than a football coach,'' Broussard said in a telephone interview Tuesday. “He has the chance to be the kind of transformative leader that a lot of HBCU chancellors and presidents talk about.''

The race to become Southern University’s next football coach continues, and William Broussard said he hasn’t determined a favorite.

But he’s getting close.

The Southern athletic director completed phone interviews with six semifinalists this week. Now, the process picks up speed. Broussard will interview finalists face-to-face next week, and he plans to have a recommendation in place by Dec. 14, when the SU System Board of Supervisors holds its next meeting on the Baton Rouge campus.
