Holy carp! Where do you find schollie room for all those guys? I mean, even going FBS, don't you have 85 guys on scholarship?

Yeah, I think the 40-45 is a bit optimistic. We have to balance out the extra scholarships, so with a 22 scholarship jump, we're not adding that many this year.

We have 16 seniors, so there's 16 or so to replace, plus the increase of maybe 10 for the jump to FBS, and then normal attrition (transfers, etc). I think we're looking more in the neighborhood of 30-35.

"We could sign as many as 35 players,” assistant coach Michael Zyskowski said.

Remember this is ODU's 4th year. We have approx. 18 seniors on the team, 5 open Scholarships due to changes, and are adding approx. 14 more scholarships for the 2013 transition year.

Also we have a few split scholarships that are allowed in FCS that will transition over before 2015 for full FBS membership.

We could sign as many as 35 players,” assistant coach Michael Zyskowski said.

I think this is right on......

Thanks DJnva

ODU must be way under last year's limits or have several kids graduating at mid-term.

Per the coaching staff, they may sign as many as 35.

Per the coaching staff, they may sign as many as 35.

That makes more sense though still probably have four or five mid-term guys who can count against last year's numbers.

More Big Football announcements for Future of ODU

ODU lands 7 to address needs on defense

ODU has 30 recruits for next season and Wilder said the list is likely to grow.

Coach Bobby Wilder announced that nine high school and junior-college football players, including seven defensive players, will enroll in January, participate in spring drills and be eligible next season.

Oscar Smith High defensive end Kanyia Anderson and outside linebacker T.J. Armstrong of Clarion, Pa. - both rated three-star recruits by ESPN - will graduate early and enroll next month. ESPN rates them as the two best of 24 high school players who have committed to sign with ODU.

Rob Thompson, a cornerback from Hammontown, N.J., and a two-star recruit, will also begin classes in January.

Rated the sixth-best college recruit in South Hampton Roads by The Virginian-Pilot, Anderson rejected offers from California and James Madison. Armstrong turned down Temple, Kent State, Buffalo and Massachusetts, and Thompson turned down Iowa and Villanova.

Old Dominion officials said Wednesday they believe their football team will be allowed to compete for the Conference USA title in 2014, a year earlier than anticipated.

"We've had meaningful conversations with Conference USA that lead me to believe we will be eligible for both the 2014 championship and also be bowl-eligible," coach Bobby Wilder said.

Athletic director Wood Selig said he has been discussing the 2014 conference championship with C-USA commissioner Britton Banowsky for months. "Brit told me that if we're going to play a full conference schedule, that it makes sense for us to be eligible for the conference championship," Selig said.

As I've mentioned before, my father lived down the road from ODU when the stadium was being built. What a great story, school and culture for football to flourish! Wish the Monarchs all the best! Only wish they would have traveled out to Cal Poly for a rematch prior to going FBS. Who knows, maybe a rematch can still happen one day.
