ODU might defeat GSU but I guarandamntee you they won't hold them to 28 and if you're willing to give 16 oints I think you'll find a lot of folks who'll take that action... see last year's meeting between the two for a reference point.
Also, I seriously doubt NDSU and Wofford both score over 20. It wouldn't surprise me to see a 17-13, 14-10 type of slobberknocker there.

Here we go:
Montana St. 24; Sam Houston St. 17 - I like this score. Sam Houston didn't dominate Cal Poly like I predicted
ODU 44; Ga. Southern 28 - GSU will score more than
North Dakota St. 27, Wofford 22 - NDSU wins but the score wont get that high.
Illinois St. 26; Eastern Washington 24.- Interesting Upset pick
Overall, I think the winning teams are right but the score will be a bit different.

Correct... and if the game rivals what we saw last year the national TV audience will be entertained greatly. That was a classic in so many ways. Good call by ESPN airing it...

ODU will not benefit from 3(?) successful fake punt conversions like last year when they had nothing to lose. The pressure is on ODU this time. The triple option limits the number of touches for Heineke.

Devasting and sad end to the ASU game - just had a horrible feeling on that extra point and wow - an end to an era for Jerry Moore just not sure where to go from here - but i felt like the winner of our game would get Sam Houston for a trip to the title game Illinois St is good - we did not get going in time - 3weeks off was too much to overcome!

NDSU over Wofford - Defensive battle, but Bison O-line starts to dominate in the 3rd qtr.
Ill St. over EWU - The Redbirds continue as Cinderella for a National Semifinal game.
ODU over GaSo - Shootout that leans towards the quick-strike offense of ODU.
SHSU over MSU - cold will be a factor, but won't stop SHSU's speed in another tight game.

Quite shocked just like last week that I see people having scores in the 20's on the Bison defense. Has anybody not learned anything yet? They haven't given up more than 14 points this year or last year in the playoffs. Why such high scores?

I don't know...I haven't thrown out my guesses yet, but even thinking that 99 times out of 100 they hold a team to say 14 or so points, every once in a while in football you get a defensive TD or punt return. Things happen. These guesses are trying to nail that 1 game where it goes against the grain because then they can say they saw it coming.
That said--you guys predicting less than 30 points for ODU? WTF??? xcoolx

So that's why the high score predictions huh? I think it's pure stupidity to guess Wofford is scoring in the mid 20's or around there. I guess people are just guessing it's bound to happen after this many good defensive games for Bison idk.

Wofford 10, North Dakota St 27 - I think the Bison are able to get out to an early lead and Wofford's offense is never able to get on track in this one.
Georgia Southern 35, Old Dominion 42 - This game will entertain just like last year but I think the Monarchs avenge last year's playoff loss with a victory at home. My pick for the the best game of the weekend.
Sam Houston St 31, Montana St 27 - SHSU's offensive performance last week worries me but I'll stick with my pre-playoff pick here. The Bearkats are a dangerous team.
Illinois St 24, Eastern Washington 38 - The Redbirds season ends on the red turf in Cheney as their defensive secondary can't keep up with the Eagles passing attack.

I love how everyone is shocked that some people picked Wofford to score 20 because the PPG the Bison have given up, but neglect that Wofford plays pretty damn good defense too, especially from a PPG perspective

Well, I was just sort of kidding. But since you think it's pure stupidity to guess Wofford is going to score in the mid 20s, I bet Wofford hangs 50 on the Beefalos. Especially if they get to factor in SAT scores.
Besides, everyone knows the only reason NDSU wins as it does at home is because the Fargo Dome is little more than a national guard armory with used astroturf scotch taped to the floor. It freaks out teams used to playing in real stadiums.
I hear even schools that have played in the FD on occasion have a hard time dealing wih the noise up there, but then, you'd find it hard to concentrate too if you had 12,000 bearded, liquored up Manitoban-American women yelling at you from eight feet away like you just stole their favorite yak.

Yeah I never said NDSU was going to score in the 20's on Wofford and that wasn't my point. Wofford may have a good defense too which compares to SDSU statistically and NDSU put up 20+ both times. Woffords defense isn't as good as NDSU's and I don't see there defense holding up as well as NDSU. They will need turnovers to win this game.

Quite a typical tool answer right there. Sounds like a bunch of crying. 18,000+ fans who are some of the best traveling fans in the FCS. Teams earn home field for a reason. Wofford wouldn't sniff 50 if they played NDSU 50 straight times, they would be lucky to ever sniff 30 if they played 50 straight times. NDSU is the better overall team period.

This made me snicker quite a bit, not the best thing to do at work but what are you going to do.
A couple corrections from your hyperbole.
-We got new fieldturf this year. (twice actually, but that's because the company that installed it messed up something with it's ability to roll up)
-No-shave Novemeber is over, the beards should be gone.
-Finally, I know I don't post here so I'm sure you don't give 2 ****s about what I think. I'm a lunker, big deal.

great match up in Fargo - FCS Classic with Wofford vs North Dakota State - best game by a landslide - look for Wofford to shock the Bizon especially if the limit mistakes and find a way to deal with the 10th Bizfan
another very nice game with Illi State visiting E Washington - I'll take Illi State because of there slick QB and hard hitting D
although great match ups, we just saw the same games last year just switching home fields - personally I would like to see Georgia Southern play Sammy and ODU vs Montana state, but anyway
the ODU D will seriously challenge Heinicke, be interesting to see if he can keep up with there pathetic D giving up big gainers all day
another match we already saw last year when Sammy visits the frozen north - this time it should be different as the cold and snow will put the Sammy fans with no where to post until next December....Happy holidays my Texas friends

NDSU 31, Wofford 10 I would be surprised if this was much closer than a few scores
ODU 44, GASO 41 Great contrast of styles, should be very entertaining
SHSU 20, MSU 16 Much better game than last year's, Don't trust MSU to win a game like this and I don't care what the weather is like
EWU 31, ILL ST 27 I really think 3 of this weekends games could go either way. I flip-flopped on this and ODU-GASO in my head a few times before posting this

the challenge being he will have to score every time ODU has the ball, therefore the biggest challenge is being generated by his own teams lack of D

Have you seen ODU's defense?!.......no way in hell they hold the eagles to 14 points! Both teams will score 30+, who wins?....flip a coin. My guess is whoever has the ball last.

Thought that Stony Brook was getting the shaft for playing in a lower level conference, and that Seawolves would acquite themselves well.
Thought the same about the Rabbits, too.xbawlingx

I'm of the opinion that if Wofford doesn't turn the ball over Saturday, we'll be in a position to win.
Also, Wofford hasn't given up 30 points all year (and that includes playing FBS SC, top offenses GSU, UNH, and App State)
The only way I can see NDSU beating us by a wide margin such as that is if we turn the ball over. That's really the key for Wofford. UNI talked like NDSU fans are last year. Yeah, they got the W, but Wofford went up and down the field on them. Turnovers were the key, and a couple of them weren't really forced. And they will remain to be the key this week.
Is it Saturday yet?

When you reach this point in the playoffs, your offense has got to be hitting close to perfection in the play-calling and execution every drive. Personally, I'll take a time-tested and equally-ranked defense against that offense.
Examples:
EWU's 9th-ranked passing O vs. ISU's 9th-ranked passing D.
NDSU's #1-ranked rushing D vs. Wofford's 2nd-ranked rushing O...
That equally-ranked D only has to disrupt the execution of the offense to force them out of rhythm and cause disruption and doubt in the sidelines and the players. Great offenses sell tickets but great defenses win championships.

It doesn't really matter. The only person who will conform to that mindset is Wofford fans because NDSU keeps bringing up last year, the fact that this defense is better than last year, and a bunch of other bull**** that I really don't care to sort out.
I feel better about this game every day.

Does defense win championships
In a word: no
So we took a look at the numbers, putting together a collage of evidence about whether defense is in fact disproportionately important in championship football.
We leaned on the research of Brian Burke at Advanced NFL Stats, who finds that elite offenses historically outperform elite defenses.
We also leaned on the research of Tobias J. Moskowitz and L. Jon Wertheim, the authors of Scorecasting. They looked at data from Super Bowls as well as 10,000-plus regular-season games, and similarly found the cliché to be unsupportable.

Stopping Wofford' run game will be much harder than stopping GaSou's . Quote me on that one. GSU runs a finesse based option, sure there is some ground and pound and rough B-Back action but nothing like Wofford. We like the outsides, we have no issue with our QB taking the ball. Wofford prefers to just send Frankenstein up the middle and tell the defense to deal with it.
They rarely do...

Even though this is an FCS Board, you want to talk NFL...ok, let's talk NFL. Take a look at the prolific Vikings of the late '90s, an offensive juggernaut who's defense had more holes than a peewee hockey goalie. They made it to the playoffs by simply outscoring everyone but when they went up against a formidable D, the offense simply couldn't carry that team.
Look over the past couple years in FCS playoffs and you'll see teams with a strong D & a steady O are moving deeper in the playoffs. The one caveat may be ODU, but they were done in last year's q-finals as well. SHSU put up 49 vs. MSU last year, 6 vs. NDSU while NDSU only put up 17 against SHSU's strong D. GaSo put up 50+ vs. ODU, 7 vs. NDSU. If ODU survives the shootout this weekend, we'll see how their high-flying offense does in the Fargodome next week. I know that the Bison O will have a field day against their 82nd-ranked D.

the nfl is an example. Why do you guys gets so defensive when facts are placed in front of you. Go ahead and pick one team, this study was done over thousands of teams.
The article says both are equal, and of course you can't expect to win with a high power offense without a defense, nor with a high power defense without an offense.

My predictions from the Salukitalk website:
Re: FCS Playoffs
Postby skinny_uncle » Mon Dec 03, 2012 9:49 pm
FCS playoffs quarterfinal round:
Montana State (11-1) vs. Sam Houston (9-3)
Dec. 7 @ 7:00 PM CT
Both teams have fairly balanced attacks with MSU being more of a passing team and SHSU being more of a running team. MSU got a scheduling break in the Big Sky by not having to play Northern Arizona or Cal Poly. My gut feeling is they might be the first seed to go down this year.
Georgia Southern (9-3) vs. Old Dominion (11-1)
Dec. 8 @ 11:00 AM CT
The #1 rushing attack (GSU) meets the #1 passing attack (ODU). ODU has a real gunslinger in Taylor Heinicke (4655 yds and 41 Tds). GSU will need to eat the clock with their running game and try to keep Heinicke off the field as much as possible. I think GSU squeaks out a close one.
NDSU (11-1)vs. Wofford (9-3)
Dec. 8 @ 2:00 PM CT
A week after stopping the #2 rusher in the country, they face the #1 rusher in Eric Breitenstein.
Wofford has an offense that gets almost 90 % of their yardage from the run. That is not a good formula against the Bison who have the best D against the run in the FCS. I think the Bison win by about 3 TDs.
Illinois State (9-3) vs. Eastern Washington (10-2)
Dec. 8 @ 5:00 PM CT
With two passing teams meeting up, this could be a real shootout. EWU should have a slight edge playing at home.
I think mine beat the sports network at least.
