Wagner is doing a great job of running clock and matriculating the ball down the field. Run to the 40.

Wagner needs a score here to break their backs.

It is a close game and 'Gate is right in this.

Doscher just got much better over his career at Wagner. He used to throw tons of picks and really didn't let the game come to him. Forced too much.

Now, it is like having a coach on the field. I saw this potential from Wagner a few years ago - glad it became a reality.

Wagner's defense has only given up more than 28 points in 2 games (38 vs. Monmmouth and 30 vs. Holy Cross). They held FBS Florida Atlantic (with 40+ more schollys) to 7 points and shutout Albany.

On offense, the Sehawks have scored 30+ in 5 of their 11 games. I think 'Gate is in for a tough game on all sides of the ball.

LFN - Wagner scored more than 30 and allowed less than 28. That's a lot closer than your prediction of a 3 TD Colagte win. xblehx

As for NEC fans, we’ve got a right to gloat. In just our 3rd AQ appearance we win a playoff game. Beating a PL team is just gravy and hopefully it silences some of the more obnoxious Lehigh, Holy Cross and Lafayette fans

Congrats to Wagner and the NEC on the playoff win, they are always fun. I guess im not surprised though, nothing against Colgate but they lost to South Dakota one of worst teams I have seen this year. Anyone who loses to that kind of team probably didn't belong in the playoffs. Patriot fans tried to say it was a changed Colgate team but in reality it was just a team playing in a weak conference.

Picked the wrong day to make mistakes all over the field. 5 turnovers from McCarney is thoroughly unexpected. Killed a few promising drives and set up the first Wagner score. Mix in a few dropped passes and you wind up struggling like that

Some of that, though, does go to the Wagner defense. Their tackling was exceptional, and you have to actually grab those fumbles to make them count. Doscher had a smart, solid game and when they really needed a play, they got it

Full credit to our defense and special teams. They were the reason we still had a shot heading into the 4th. Never expected to see Specials as the best unit in the game but there you have it

Congratulations Seahawks, and good luck on the red turf. I'll be pulling for you :)

A good win for Wagner. They deserved it. Colgate happened to play their best game when Lehigh played their worst. Raiders not a very good team in a down year for the PL. Teams without defense can't win in the playoffs, especially when your QB turns the ball over 5 times. I think Wagner could beat EWU at home, but it will be tough to fly across the country and play on that awful red field.

Congrats to Wagner. Their defense really to it to Colgate. They made plays and Colgate's offense made mistakes. It proved to be a lethal combination. Colgate had five turnovers but (I think) fumbled the ball seven times (losing three). This is uncharacteristic of Colgate's offense but maybe they just hadn't seen a defense this good. Colgate's last touchdown drive was what the offense looked like all year. It was a shame that it took a later bus to Staten Island. Good luck to The Wag the rest of the way and congrats on bringing some good news to Staten Island--a place that could certainly use it.

That has to mean that last year's win counts somehow this year for the Patriot League's strength. Lehigh would have been lucky to finish 2-9 this year with UNI's schedule and most certainly wouldn't have kept it within 2 TD's of each of the Big Ten schools that UNI's AD must have mistakenly scheduled for the same season. Seriously, WTF?!It was 2010 not last year. Wake up. It has nothing to do this year BUT IT SURE WAS FUN BEATING NORTHERN IOWA, AND I DON"T INTEND TO FORGET IT. Your league ought to get over themselves. It'a not really a big deal.

Oh. My bad. Something even further in the past is what you are hanging your hat on. I guess if I wanted to I could go on and on about MSU winning the NCAA Mens' Basketball National Championship back in 1929, but I don't. Why? Because it has no bearing on this year (or this sport). Lehigh was lucky to be 10-1 this year. Beating Princeton by a field goal? Kicking Holy Cross' butts by a whole point. Not really sure why you are yelling in caps at me over something having nothing to do with my team of choice. I think you should probably be the one to wake up here.

This is what I mean PL fans full of excuses.

2005 - Colgate won the Patriot League AQ, but lost to CCSU.
2006 - Lehigh was Patriot League co-champs and lost to Albany. Lafayette won the AQ and escaped week 1 with a 25-14 win over Sacred Heart.
2007 - Fordham win Patriot League AQ and lost to Albany.

Congratulations to Wagner and the NEC.

To think 30 years ago Colgate was a 1A team and you were a DIII team, and it was clear you were the better, more talented team. The PL has a lot of catching up to do; hopefully Schollies help a bit but to see names like Stony Brook, Albany, and Wagner and their respective conferences, let alone the CAA (which when some of those teams were in the old Yankee Conference, there was not much difference in that level of ball and the PL teams).

Good luck to Wagner in the second round.

Not really an excuse, more of an observation. Lehigh was an awful 2nd half team this year and that's why they lost to Colgate. Colgate had no defense. The entire league was about the same of talent, and pretty weak this year. I've had nothing but respect for the NEC after seeing Monmouth this year and watching Albany several times recently. Wagner has to be a good team to be able to travel after Sandy and blow out the Danes on their own field. The PL went 5-3 against the NEC this year, so the leagues are about equal on talent. Haven't seen too many reasonable Lehigh fans denying that the NEC is a league at the same level as ours this year.

FWIW, I favored Wagner coming into this one. 8 wins in a row with a 30-0 drubbing of Albany on the road is impressive. I figured that they would win if they could stop the run (and they did) and move the ball (and they did).

It all comes down to numbers. Among 100 recruits eligible to play I-A football, the PL chooses to ignore 85% of them, and with what's left, they lose half to the Ivy League from the start. NEC teams can recruit all of those kids, and at some point, the supply of available talent exceeds the demand curve of those wishing to play in the PL, fielding teams with an ever smaller fraction of of the recruiting pool.

As DFW so often points out - changing aid alone won't help the PL.

Wagner is going to be at a disadvantage against a team like EWU because the NEC is only offering 40 schollys compared to 63. But the the NEC is recruting talent (and speed) on par with theese "power conference" teams. Look a kid like Docher - he was a 22 year old Frosh who had played minor league baseball would never be accepted at a PL school. Wagner has transfers on the roster from programs like Hofstra and Syracuse. Wagner is able to redshirt its players. Wagner recruited (as does many NEC teams) heavily in Florida. Wagner scheduled a FBS game. The NEC has been doing a lot more things that just switching from grant-in-aid to schollys.

The PL is playing by Ivy rules and they will struggle to compete against what its becoming standard at FCS schools - redshirts, FBS transfers, etc. That's why I think the NEC has a bright future.

Wagner's win helps all NEC in future recruiting! Congrats again to Wagner!

Wagner will have a great chance to represent the NEC next weekend. They will play the champion of a power conference and have a chance to see how they stack up.

While this is not the PL of the late 80s and 90s, I still think the league is relevant and that scholarships will increase the talent in the league, at least to some degree. Lehigh beat the MVFC champ in 2010 (a fact, no matter how much people downplay UNI and the MVFC's talent that year) and the CAA champ in 2011. I can understand why some are hesitant to name the NEC as an equal, even if one of their teams beats our AQ, until they have a signature win over a power conference champion in the playoffs. I think the NEC is about on par with the PL at the moment. The direction of the NEC is promising, though Albany's departure is a big loss.

I'm jaded by the Academic Index. This was not instituted as a result of flunkouts or scandal, only as a competitive horse collar around these schools for the purpose of staying in the good graces of the Ivy League.

I trust the caliber of student who Holy Cross chooses to admit to its class. Unfortunately, the league does not.

There's plenty of time to talk about how Georgetown continues in the PL without scholarships. This is Wagner's day to stand tall.
We should all get off this thread. Status of PL with schollies is not relevant here. Altho, you like many assume AI is a huge limiting factor. Not really true. Consider just in the NE there are over 2000 high schools playing football.
Anyway, I'm sure this topic will reappear for the next decade or so.
Agree this is Wagner's day.

Colgate tough day nothing went right? MCcarney great player had a tough time I think he may have had injury. That is football you win some you lose some?
BUT the behavior from the Wagner football players grabbing their nuts to the fans and yelling during the game obscenities was disgusting I will never tell a player that I coach or speak to to go to school that promotes that type of behavior. Enough said good luck East Washington you will be shocked at this group and the behavior of these "football" players?

The wrong team represented the PL today. Once again I say, and it is true beyond a doubt, The roughing the punter penalty by Lehigh in the first half is the reason. Simply the truth, so don't give me a hard time.

How about a little class, Ace? We beat Lehigh.

Sam, didn't see what their players were doing on the field but heard (from a former football player Colgate alum) a lot of our fans we all over their players and had to be moved away from behind their bench by the cops--which I don't think I have ever heard of at an away game but that might explain some of what happened on the field. As for SingForever, it's amazing how Lehigh gets one poster a year, normally around playoff time, that turns this whole board against the school. Not sure why he wasn't with OL FU in Crapsville. Which is where I'm headed for a Bulleit, rocks and a what-if chaser.

Exactly what I mean.

Maybe a few non-'gate fans have come to see the light, but the majority of Lehigh/Lafayette/HC fans have nothing but distain for the NEC and are bitter at the new status quo of FCS football.

LFN, Bogus and Sader are the 3 stooges of this group of PL fans of a bygone era.

In what fantasy world do I have disdain for the NEC? Sure, I'll own "Colgate winning by 3 TDs" after watching their offense put up 50+ and 60+ points on Georgetown and Lafayette. But "disdain"? You've been hanging around Eastern Washington and UNI fans too long.

Apparently a bunch of students with Mo-vember mustaches. My friend was sitting with his wife (who went to Wagner) and he said it made Colgate look pretty bad. You're always going to have kids acting like idiots at some point. I played football and I was a holy mess to visiting teams at hockey games. A few idiots (like myself in the day) don't define a school. Just like five posters on this board don't define a school. I do feel like Colgate's team plays clean and Biddle is an honorable guy and I feel like, in general, our fans are good. I've never seen any bad stuff at football games since I graduated but I'm sure it happens.

2012 - Colgate (PL AQ) loses in playoffs to Wagner (NEC AQ)

Not sure what is meant by 'excuses', as I don't recall PL fans condescending about the NEC. Heck, we've recognized for years that with scholarships your league had become significantly stronger than in the early part of the decade. Indeed, that Albany team that beat Lehigh on opening day in 2006 also beat Delaware that year! As a league they have become very competitive with the PL. With scholarships I am hopeful we'll be raising the bar another notch or two. Over the past few years, the top one or two NEC teams were always on a par with the top PL teams, but overall I think the PL was had more parity, and in the past couple the overall strength of the conference has improved.

Any chance moving foward we could see a combined conference between Nec and Patriot? Not likely in the near future. PL Presidents are looking for "all sports" companions as opposed to associations in just one sport. Fordham has been an exception, but they were a earlier all sport member and I won't be surprised if they return in near future in that capacity. Georgetown also an exception, but their location and academic 'cache" makes the association good. Philosophically, most if not all the Presidents will not agree to combining based upon what they see as academic profile and how that would effect the "Academic Index" all schools must follow. So while I don't see an actual merger, I would like to see a 'working relatationship' similar to what we have with the Ivy League.

That working relationship is extremely visible in the world of college hoops. There's a specific Patriot/NEC challenge in hoops for the women, and always lots of collaboration with the men's as well. For example, LIU-Brooklyn plays Lafayette this year as a home-and-home.

As much as the NEC people here hate the Patriot League, in reality I think the leadership of both conferences are much more closely aligned than you think.

Extremely doubtful this would ever happen and yes to purists, or even simply those proud of our conference, this would be a very distasteful outcome. Most PL folks I talk to dislike even Boston U. and Loyola, so any connection to CCSU, or Wagner, etc, would be unpalatable. And for full disclosure, I am also of that view.

Perhaps from an athletics point of view, but not from an academic or institional one. With schollies now, I think the PL will capture more of the qualified kids that end up at an Ivy or NEC school because of money.
