Former Dolphins and Chargers linebacker Junior Seau retired on Monday, ending a 16-year NFL career in which he played 230 career games, all at linebacker. Only two others played the position in more regular season NFL games. Who are they?

Ronnie Lott played cornerback and safety. Lott got his break as a cornerback at USC when a guy one year ahead of me from my high school, Carter Hartwig (five-year NFL career with the Houston Oilers) sprained his ankle in a game against Alabama. Hartwig dated one of my best friends.
Butkas, by the way, had his brilliant career cut short by knee injuries (1965-73), just like another great Chicago Bear, RB Gale Sayers (he was even better than Walter Payton). Sayers, FYI, also spent some time as the AD at Southern Illinois (how's that for a I-AA tie-in?).

Ray Nitschke played for my beloved Green Bay Packers from 1958-72. Lambert played 11 years for the Steelers (1974-84). Andy Russell played with the Steelers at LB from 1963-76. There were a lot of 1950s and 60s era guys that played for a long time.

Bill Romanowski played 243 games at linebacker for the 49ers, Eagles, Broncos and Raiders from 1988 to 2003. He ranks second behind Clay Matthews who appeared in 278 games for the Browns and Falcons from 1978 to 1996.
