View Full Version : How big are your "big uglies"?

If the season started tomorrow Lafayette would field an Offensive Line that runs as follows, left to right:

LT 6',4" 300lbs (pre-season All American)
LG 6',3" 285lbs
C 6',2" 305lbs
RG 6',4" 305lbs
RT 6,5" 310lbs

That's an average height and weight of 6',4" (actually 6,3.6" but we round up!) and 301 lbs.

That's a pretty formidable line. And given that they are coached by the best OL coach in the country (at the very least the league), Bob Heffner...I have no doubt they will be dominant!

So how large are are your lineman? How do they stack up against the rest of your league?

For the Paladins of Furman University there will most likely be a good deal of rotation. Several of these guys can play a couple positions. Lost some key members from last year though.

Projected...hardly set.

LT John Kivett, 6'3 280 lbs
LG Scott Shuford, 6'3 285 lbs
C David Menocal, 6'2 275 lbs
RG Reggie Goolsby 6'1 282 lbs
RT Joel Bell, 6'7 315 (not a typo)

There is a lot of speculation that this might change. You can bet the farm that Kivett and Bell are holding down at tackle. Shuford has moved inside from tackle to guard to make room for Bell.

the starting five in fall camp are Rinehart (6-5, 310) at left tackle, Tyler Rawlins (6-3, 301) at left guard, Hoffman (6-4, 284) at center, Barrett Anderson (6-3, 313) at right guard and Joe Lobdell (6-7, 315) at right tackle

Going into this season, many believe the O-Line will be the main strength of the Hen's team. Though the starting five is far from etched in stone, right now it looks like:

LT Nicholson FR.R 6-3 275
LG Hermann SO. 6-3 290
C Ciarvirelli JR. 6-3 300
RG Beverly JR. 6-6 300
RT Byrne JR. 6-6 295

As you can see, not a senior in the group. This is a big reason why Delaware fans are cautiously optimistic about this season, but very excited about the prospects of 2007 and beyond. There is a lot of young talent on this team.

I concur senor! That 365 is a rather conservative estimate. I just didn't want to deviate to far from what's listed on the roster. Big Earl is one LARGE HUMAN BEING who can move that big body around pretty good!!

I agree with you on moving Flowers. Shifting him to LT makes all the sense in the world. Good athlete, great feet and can get down field and block. Height and weight aren't that critical at the collegiate level. Technical skills are much more important. Furman and App St had quite possibly the two best O-lines in I-AA last year, neither of them being particularly huge. Not to mention it depends on the type of offense involved.

There are lines that average 6'4, 310 that are terrible, and lines that average 6'2, 280 that are dominant.

I agree it depends on what type of offense you run. If you're a finesse, running team that likes to run a lot counter, zone, or option, chances are you want linemen athletic enough to make difficult blocks. You'll take 'em big or small, just as long as they can execute. If your a power running team or a predominantly passing team, chances are you want big linemen that can either mash people at the point of attack or pass block. The Denver Broncos had one of the best lines in NFL history there for about three or four years and very few of them weighed 300 pounds. So did the Dallas Cowboys and there line averaged 330 plus. There's always more than one way to skin a cat.

Maybe the smallest line mentioned here at an average of 280 lbs., but ASU only lost one lineman from last year's squad who produced a 1400 yard rusher and only allowed 10 sacks (15 games), yeah I know a little bit of that has to do with Richie ;) . Note three of them are preseason All-SoCon and two are preseason All-Americans.

David Menocal C 6-2, 275 SO

Kivett and Bell could become one of the best tackle combos in I-AA this season. Thornburg is th ewildcard on the Furman O-Line he was considered the best lineman of the class that included All-Americans Stewart and Covington, the problem is Thornburg has been hurt. Also look out for Bama product Tyler Haynes, Ole Miss farked up his scholarship good for Furman, this kid plays with attitude, tuff and mean and backs it up already 445 bench press.

ASU's lines are nothing to write home about in terms of size, but they did their job well in all but a couple games last year with most returning. Vs Lafayette, outmanned size-wise, they held Lafayette out of the backfield most of the night and opening holes ffor Kevin Richardson to pick up 171 yds rushing. The defense for App picked up 4 sacks.
Huge lines are nice but not always a necessity in I-AA.

ASU's O-line only has one 300 pounder and he is only 300 even. Kerry Brown 6'6" 300 lb LG.
The D-line's largest player is Daniel Orlebar 6'3" 295.

This is true, To say I'm not worried about our line is an understatement. Most of these guys were recruited to run the trip-O. I know the transition to a spread offense is not going to be easy. There a good line, somewhat undersized in order to chase down LB's, etc. It will take some time to "re-gel" and get the terminology and tech skills. I forsee alot of penalties early on. This is the only thing that worries me. We have ridiculous atheletes on the O-side of the ball and coach Van Gorder will have the D salty and mean...Our QB Clark seems to be coming along very nicely, fierce competitior and intense. Going to be an interesting year.

True, but I'd take a 300lber with great feet pulling like a freight train around the corner over either that you mentioned!

You'll find those signed with some big I-A program.

App and Furman were outweighed and many occasions last year and both made it to and met in the semi-final game.
I'll take whatever works in I-AA. Now vs NC State on Sept 2, I might have other preferences.

LT Junior Cody Balogh (6-7, 300)
LG Junior Eric Michel (6-6, 281)
C Senior Jeff Marshall (6-5, 285)
RG Sophomore Colin Dow (6-5, 315)

Pretty good sized line. Not huge, but not tiny, either.

6-6,285 center?
