If the 2005 season was a painful experience for the Sam Houston State football team, it was even worse for second-year coach Todd Whitten.

Taking over the reins last season after compiling a 45-23 record in six seasons at Tarleton State, Whitten was faced with the task of directing a youthful Bearkats squad that featured 24 freshmen and sophomores on its two-deep depth chart. With a new staff in place and few veterans, Sam Houston State went 3-7.

More than anything, Whitten is bothered by the notion he didn't coach his team as well as he could have. He plans to change that this season.

"I'm going to coach our team better," Whitten said. "I didn't do a very good job last year. I made a lot of mistakes, and hopefully I got all the dumb beat out of me."
