'Blue' notes
Cleared on Wednesday to play in 2006 by the NCAA after an eligibility mix-up, Tallulah native Landry "Blue" Carter immediately added a different dimension to Grambling's drills on Thursday.
Carter was hitting inside holes with uncommon vision, fluidly moving to the edge on outside running plays and pulling down several gutty catches like he’d never been gone.
"You've got to be great in all phases to return to the championship," said GSU coach Melvin Spears "'Blue' is an important part of that mix."
Carter has seen playing time at running back, receiver and returner. Not bad for a former walk on. Initially, he was just a guy hanging around practice, trying to convince Spears to let him play.
"Every day, he was just worrying me to death," Spears said. "Finally, he got his shot and it turned out he was a fantastic player."
That led, Carter said, to some confusion over how many years he had left to play football.
Carter didn't actually earn a scholarship until 2005, and then quickly shot to national recognition on the BET reality series "Season of the Tiger" - which chronicled his struggle to become a responsible parent to a newborn while balancing football.
"He's such a mature kind of guy," Spears said. "The notoriety was good, but participating was more important to him that anything that happened with the TV show. He's got a little girl, and that helps him remain committed to doing what he needs to."

Dustin has been a steady force for the Griz the past couple of seasons and would have started for a lot of teams during that time span, but instead he backed up four-year starter Lance Spencer. I had a chance to spend some extended time with Dominique as I was writing a chapter of my book, Magic On The Mountain. I found him to be a real nice kid. Too bad that injuries have slowed him down so much at App State.
