Today, I am preparing for a couple of games in the Philadelphia area. I will be starting my day at Franklin Field for the Harvard-Penn Ivy League title showdown and will also spend some time at the James Madison-Villanova game, a key CAA matchup. Too bad the games are not spaced further apart in start time, which means I'll only get to see about half of Harvard-Penn before driving across the Main Line to Villanova for the JMU-VU class. Still should be a fun day.

I leave for Franklin Field in less than an hour.

Come and spend some time with me today at a couple of important FCS games. As always, comments and questions are welcome and appreciated.

Mr. C, I salute your work ethic. I've done the two games in a day thing many times and it is exhausting. I hope that you stay warm and dry and have exciting games so you can be jumping up and down in excitement instead of being cemented into your seat.

Very, very upset I'm not going to be at the game today. The only home game I'll miss all season. So thank you Mr. C, I'll be refreshing this page all day as I move around Pittsburgh.

PHILADELPHIA, PA. — From my days reading British professional tennis guides when I played competitively in the sports as prepster in the 1970s, I became familiar with a rather interesting word, not often used on this side of the Atlantic.

I couldn't help but laugh the first time I found an excuse to use the word penultimate some time back.

But as I sat down in the press box of historic Franklin Field on a sunny and slightly cool Saturday morning, I couldn't help but think that this is the penultimate weekend of the Football Championship Subdivision regular season.

I'm here today to see either host Penn, or visiting Harvard capture a share of the 56th Ivy League championship. Both teams are 6-1 in league play, a game ahead of Dartmouth and Princeton.

The winner will clinch no less than a tie for the Ancient Eight crown, though the loser will still have a shot at tying for the title should the winner lose to Cornell (Penn), or Yale (Harvard) next week.

Dartmouth and Princeton close out the year facing off at Princeton Stadium next week. Dartmouth hosts Brown and Princeton is at Yale this Saturday.

Later on, I'll drive over to the Main Line to watch James Madison and Villanova do their parts to either confuse, or clear up the mess that is the Colonial Athletic Association championship race.

First off, what would be the CAA leader in most seasons, Old Dominion (8-1, 5-1), is ineligible for the league title and auto bid to the playoffs because of the Monarchs' decision last spring to move to the Football Bowl Subdivision and Conference USA next season.

ODU is still eligible for one of the 10 at-large berths in the 20-team NCAA Division I Football Championships when the field is announced next weekend. The Monarchs host William & Mary this Saturday.

New Hampshire — a 64-61 loser to the Monarchs earlier in the season — has a 6-1 CAA mark with a bye this weekend before closing the regular season against surging Towson (5-4, 4-2), the defending CAA champion.

JMU (7-2, 5-1) controls its own destiny with tough games against Villanova on the road and ODU at home to close the season.

But should the right circumstances come together, Villanova (6-3, 4-2), Towson and Richmond (6-3, 4-2) all have a chance to gain a share of the CAA crown.

Central Arkansas clinched the auto bid in the Southland Conference last weekend and several other schools, such as Stony Brook (Big South), Bethune-Cookman (MEAC), Lehigh (Patriot) Appalachian State (SoCon).

It is indeed the penultimate weekend.

Penn took the opening kickoff to the 31 after Harvard won the coin toss and deferred to the 2nd Half. Billy Ragone, one of the seniors playing their final game for the Quakers at Franklin Field, has run and passed the Quakers down the field to a first down at the Harvard 33.

Holland in at QB as expected, though I'd have a tough time taking Ragone out right now. Zero on a 1st down run and questionable hit on Holland to the jaw on 2nd down. Holland pass is incomplete and Harvard finally forces a punt.

Halftime

Penn 21
Harvard 14.

Mr. C
November 10th, 2012, 02:24 PM
And now after a crosstown trek, I'm at Villanova Stadium where the Wildcats played an impressive first half to take a 17-0 lead on James Madison. The Cats scored early to take a 7-0 lead and then dominated the Duke defense in term of yardage. The Villanova defense held Justin Thorpe and company in check and an interception midway through the second quarter and several conversions on third and fourth down allowed Dorian Wells to score and give the Wildcats a 17-0 advantage before the break.

Villanova was obviously helped by the week off and has been crisp on both sides of the ball.

Mr. C
November 10th, 2012, 02:26 PM
Meanwhile, back at Franklin Field, Penn is holding to its 21-14 lead midway through the third period. I felt like keeping Harvard off the scoreboard when the Crimson got the second-half kickoff was a big key and the Quaker defense accomplished this. We could be seeing the best game that both Penn and Villanova have played all year long.

Mr. C
November 10th, 2012, 02:27 PM
Upset alert, William & Mary leads Old Dominion 28-27 midway through the third period.

JMU begins its drive at the Duke 13 after a bobbled return and a big VU hit. Thorpe fires incomplete on 1st down and is tripped up by Sarnese, who is having a big game, on the option. 3rd and 8 pass to Hunter is close enough to measure for the first down.

Monangai finds a hole and goes into the end zone off-tackle on the left side. Villanova 33, JMU 7. 1:22 left in the third period.

9 plays, 55 yards, 4:33 on the drive. Pretty impressive drive for Chris Polony, one of the top backup QBs in the country. And in honor of the Tuesday election, I'm projecting Villanova will win this one and gain who knows how many Electoral Votes.

JMU's Ryan Smith returns the kickoff to the 28

Mr. C
November 10th, 2012, 03:11 PM
The last play looked like backyard football as Thorpe faked a run, faked and handoff and threw to the sidelines for a first down. Scott scampers for 19 to the VU 49 on a pass play as JMU goes into hurry-up mode with the final seconds of the third period ticking off the clock.

Mr. C

Throwaway by Thorpe as the third period ends.

Villanova 33
JMU 7

Mr. C
November 10th, 2012, 03:12 PM
The problem for JMU now is that it must score four times against a tough Villanova defense with an offense not really designed to pass the ball effectively.

On third and 7, Thorpe scrambles for a first down to the VU 35.

Mr. C
November 10th, 2012, 03:16 PM
And Penn might have put the final nail in the coffin. Brandon Copeland has had a incredible day for Penn at DE and he capped it by tackling Colton Chapple for a safety to make it 30-21 with about a minute left.

Penn 30, Harvard 21.

Mr. C
November 10th, 2012, 03:17 PM
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, VU was called for a questionable defensive holding penalty and then JMU got caught for offensive holding. Scott then raced to the VU 23 for 8 yards. 2nd and 8 after all that.

Mr. C

Congrats to the Quakers on a somewhat unexpected Ivy League championship. Al Bagnoli and his coaching staff have done one of their better coaching jobs this season. Of course, this is one of the best-coached teams in FCS.

Yes, as a matter of fact he just made a dive into the air and came up empty on an all-out tackling effort.

VU is into all-out run the clock out mode with its ground game. Polony is still at QB.

SRobertson goes flying over Polony as he hits the ground on the read option. And the clock is ticking down to 32 seconds before VU stops the clock with its second time out on fourth and 11.

I've seen Harvard score 16 points in 49 seconds against Yale and San Jose State score 16 in less than a minute in a rivalry game with Fresno State, but I don't expect JMU to do it today.
