Prior to the opening of Alfond Stadium in 1998, attendance reporting at Maine was sketchy at best (sometimes even less than the amount of people there IMO), but the largest crowds I've seen were during the Mike Buck (Maine QB) era back in the late 80s. Maine went to the playoffs in 87 and 89 and during that 89 season, not only were the grandstands packed, but people lined the field 10 deep at times. I'd say that there were a few crowds that season that approached 11-12 K.

Coughlin-Alumni Stadium
Coughlin-Alumni Stadium has served as the home field for South Dakota State Univeristy football teams since 1962.
Through the first 44 years of operation, the Jackrabbits have played 234 games at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium and have posted a 141-93 home record. In 2005, SDSU completed a 5-2 home record, improving to 39-13 at home in John Stiegelmeier's nine seasons as head coach.
Lights were installed at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium in the fall of 2000, with the Jackrabbits making their debut under the lights during the 2001 season. SDSU holds a 12-2 record in home night games.
SDSU has four games scheduled at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium during the 2006 season, including two night games.
An average of 6,934 fans attended Jackrabbit games at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium in 2005. Two crowds topped the 10,000 mark as 10,633 fans attended the Sept. 24 Beef Bowl game against Cal Poly and a crowd of 14,503 attended the Oct. 22 Hobo Day game with Missouri-Rolla.
The largest crowd ever to see a football game of any kind in South Dakota came through the turnstiles on Hobo Day, Oct. 19, 1985, when 16,193 fans saw SDSU defeat the University of South Dakota 24-12. USD was undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the nation (NCAA Division II) at the time.

The official number in the box score was 10,032 at the 2004 game versus Arkansas Tech, in our stadium which "officially" holds 8,500 making that game at 118% of our capacity. Personally I think there were closer to 11,000 people there! Hopefully that record will be broken this year with some of our home games...especially Missouri State. I know that I remember reading somewhere that our university president wants to see 15,000 there for that game!

In '86 they made the Championship game where the Bison again won 27-7.

I have always wondered, what was so special about that Bucknell game that it was filled with more people than some Lafayette games? Homecoming? But other homecoming games have not drawn those numbers... I know a Cornell game is up there too...
If I recall, Bucknell had some decent teams in that timeframe, and they do have a fair number of alums in the Lehigh Valley (I know they have a LV Alumni Club--since my daughter is now a member and gets the mailings); but more impacting was a special Upperclass Parents Weekend' that melded with absolutely gorgeous weather. If you look at the picture of Goodman on this board and used elsewhere, it was that game ( I can tell by BU's unis) that was cool but bathed in sunlight. Just a perfect day for college football. So a lot of parents that might have opted for some other activities went through the turnstiles.
The Cornell game you mention was the first game at Goodman, and was well over 13,000. Heck, we had over 13,000 for the Georgetown game last year (not to 'dis' the Hoyas, but we have to agree they are not a road draw) that was also a Parents Weekend event.

I know you're going to find this difficult to believe, but it's 20K for the 1977 season ending matchup with UMass with the Yankee Conference auto-bid for the D-II playoffs on the line. Obviously, it was a different time as SRO was allowed much closer to the field than today and the capacity was 15K. I still recall the multiple rows of fans circling the field that day.

who won?
Since I zinged Saint (IIRC) about UNH beating UMass in 1975, I'm obligated to tell the truth about 1977. UMass won 19-6 to keep UNH from their third consecutive Yankee Conference Autobid to the D-II Playoffs. The Wildcats had won the two prior matchups with the Minutemen (were they still the Redmen in 1977????), but the senior combo of Jeff Allen (QB) and Bill Burnham (UNH's leading rusher until this guy named Azumah obliterated his records) couldn't finish their careers on top.
This series of games over three years along with season ending matchups for something like 25 years keep UMass as the number one UNH rival in old timer's (like me) opinion. The younger crew no doubt views Maine as the biggest rival due to the ice hockey rivalry. UMass74 might be able to place UNH in the UMass list of rivals from those days forward. IIRC, UMass still played Boston College and Holy Cross annually. Since both were very good and also in Massachusetts, I'll guess that those games were bigger for UMass. But after 1985 I'll bet that UNH moved up toward that #1 slot.
Edit: In the light of morning, I thinked I zinged UMass74 not Saint0917. Either way I'm taking my shots for the UMass revenge in 1977.

It had railroad tracks that went right through the middle of it. In a 1987, a train actually rolled through the crowd on the hill during a Parents Day game.

A nice win for the Kats infront of a large crowd, including folks watching at home on ABC!
Oct. 24, 1994 - A crowd of 16,148 (the largest crowd ever to witness a sports event in Huntsville) watches along with an ABC regional television audience as Sam Houston State defeats 14th-ranked Alcorn State (and their NFL-bound quarterback Steve McNair) at Bowers Stadium.

The old capacity of Andy Kerr Stadium was 12,500 without specially installed end-zone bleachers or SRO. Two cames at Andy Kerr had both end-zone stands AND SRO:
September 10, 1977, Colgate 23, Rutgers 0, attendance: 18,000
October 2, 1982, Colgate 21, Holy Cross 17, attendance: 14,500

I can't believe no Bison fans have posted with the official numbers...
Top 3 attendances in NDSU history: (Not counting the games at Dacotah field where the sports info people used to just pull arbitrary numbers out of their asses at every game. Only when the Bison started playing in the Fargodome in 1993 did the system of counting attendance become accurate. Besides, we definitely never had a game at Dacotah Field where the true number of butts in seats was much over the capacity of 15,500.)
