I have the feeling this will be a 13-10 type game as both teams have question marks on the offensive side.

Duke has lost it's starting QB and starting tight end (transfer to Delaware). I would say the Richmond - Duke game gets near the top of the list for most winnable I-AA / I-A Game.

Remember Richmond will be starting a QB with little or no experience, as the case with our backups. In spite of that I think this "leveled" the playing field and I look forward to a solid change to win against a 1-A. Our D will be solid and I like our running backs and our O-line. If we don't get hit be the old "depth bug" it could be a real interesting game. With the state of mind the Duke team has to be in if we could get up early it may be over early.

I'd look at a D1-AA school if I was him.

I think Duke's QB situation is much worse than Richmond's. Mark Schneider transferred to Youngstown. Gene DelDonne transferred to Middle Tennessee State. The projected starter spent more time as a wide receiver. He is one of 2 players on scholarship that can play QB. The 3rd string QB is a walk on. Duke went 1-10 last year. I don't see a chance for imporovement.
The one happy camper in all this must be Ben Patrick the team captain and TE who transferrred to Delaware can't help but feel the QB's he will play with are better than the disaster that is going on in Durham.

Richmond had a QB last year who had played reciever before and it worked out ok. I still don't buy the idea that Duke shouldn't be favored. I've looked at their roster and they have a big d-line. It'll be tough for Richmond to run and I don't know if we can pass.

When I played golf with former Richmond/current VMI coach Jim Reid, he said the Spiders will be in good hands at QB. With some good RBs, a solid line and a great defense with two All-American types leading the way, I think the Spiders could have a lot of fun at Duke in the season opener.

With another good season AND a win at Duke, do Spider fans think Clawson will get an opportunity at a BCS school? He was always very open at Fordham that he was going to pursue bigger and better things eventually and I have nothing but respect for not only what he did with our program but also that he was honest about his aspirations. I know that sometimes things change as kids get older and he may not want to move his family again, so perhaps he's changed his thoughts on this and it would only be for a plum job, though, so just curious if anyone has a feel for it.
I do think that he understands the impact that a win over Duke can have with the program and I'd be VERY suprised if UR isn't up and fully prepared for that game. Doesn't mean it'll be easy or that they'll definitely win but, again, I'd be surprised if they don't play an outstanding game that day.
Another strong season and I think he'd definitely have opportunities provided to him, though. Reviving one program from depths unknown and then taking another one back to prominance again is a very strong resume and would likely be very compelling for a program down on its luck and looking for a turnaround specialist type.

Coach Clawson has shared the same thoughts with us as well. He has said that he wants to be a head coach at a BCS program, but that he doesn't want to move until that position opens up (i.e. doesn't want to bounce around as an assistant). He estimated that between 7 & 10 years when he started at UR. I don't know if that opportunity will come up sooner or not. I do know that he has a good deal here at Richmond (both financially and support for the program) and his family likes the area. The presumption at this point is that he'll probably stay around until the new stadium opens, but not much longer than that.
