A proposed seventh access bowl is becoming less likely and the commissioners of the BCS might stick with their original plan of only having six in the new playoff format, sources told ESPN.
After the commissioners met in Rosemont, Ill., in September, The Associated Press reported that they had discussed the possibility of creating a seventh access bowl. The game would give smaller conferences guaranteed access, pitting the top-ranked champion from the five non-power conferences (Big East, Mountain West, Conference USA, Mid-American and Sun Belt) annually against a team from either the Big 12 or Pac-12.
However, this is becoming more unlikely because of a myriad of concerns and obstacles involved for a seventh access bowl. Among them: The bowl's lesser worth compared to the other access bowls, the difficulty of selling tickets for an annual bowl featuring a non-power conference team and finding a bowl that wants to host the game that also meets the stadium capacity requirements for an access bowl and the national semifinals, sources said.
The champions of the power conferences (SEC, Big 12, Pac-12, Big Ten and ACC) all have a guaranteed spot in the access -- or high-revenue -- bowls that will begin after the 2014 regular season, the first year of college football's new four-team playoff.
"I think everyone has realized the seventh bowl is not on the level with the other contract bowls," a source said. "The question was, how much can we get for this game? It didn't sound like it was a lot.".....

You mean they actually draw a line when making up fake postseason games?

This playoff thing is a joke. Unless you are in the power conference don't look on going to the playoffs.

Giving the champion of the CUSA, MWC, Sun Belt, MAC and Big East conferences automatic access to the playoff would make it not a joke?

Why can't the playoff be the champion from every conference plus a few non AQ teams. Just like....oh yeah every other NCAA divsions of football. I would love to see Ohio or ULM knock off Alabama or send Ohio State back home without a title.

Well that couldn't happen b/c Ohio St is on probation and Alabama would beat the piss out of Ohio of ULM

Yes but I figured with the Ohio and ULM comment he made he was insinuating this year since they are not necessarily traditional powers that come to mind

I mean any year. I just picked 2 teams that will never see a National Title.

Just another case of the little guys being told that they might have a chance, then having the rug pulled out from underneath. This playoff is only set up for the big guys.

Exactly. The only one who thinks this will work is mplsbison.

You should have picked UND :p.
I really hope something changes and everyone gets a shot at the NC.
How fun was the Butler or VCU run in basketball... I mean come on people!

Just because you form a conference doesn't mean anything.
Take the 10 worst ranked teams in the division. Form a new conference. Did they suddenly earn something? No.

When a little guy does enough to earn his place, he will get it. That is a fact.

Really? So teams like Utah, Boise, TCU never did enough?

The same system wasn't in place at that time.
And by the way, all those you listed won BCS bowls. What more were you expecting, given the original post of this thread?
They've already achieved what this thread was discussing.

They put Boise and TCU against each other so that they couldn't bump anyone else off. They wouldn't put an undefeated Utah in a matchup where they could win it all. I don't think that the WAC or the MWC were BCS conferences then, were they?
Either way, the system is crap.

A chance at a National Title game. Boise went how many years with 0 or 1 loss and never got a shot. It will be the same until there is an actual playoff like in the FCS, DII, and DIII.

Boise beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta bowl. That was the game with three amazing plays in a row for them to upset the Sooners in Adrian Peterson's last season. Also the one where what's his face from Boise proposed to his cheerleader gf on screen.
TCU beat Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl.
Utah embarrassed Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. The TIDE for cripes sake.
What on earth are you talking about? "so they couldn't bump anyone else off" Huh??

They didn't lose to anyone because they didn't play anyone.
If a lower conference team plays up and wins, they'll get their shot. Pretty simple, actually.

You talking then or now because then...never happened. Now with this 4 team playoff...we'll see but I am NOT holding my breath.

Now.
Then, still we don't know for sure. They never played up, but it's not worth getting into a huge argument because it's gone. Let's focus on the future going forward with the playoff. It's a game changer for teams considering moving up to I-A.

Not really simple at all b/c they can't play up as the power conferences won't schedule them

So you telling me any team from the MAC has a shot at one of the 4 playoff spots.

Ohio is 7-0 right now after beating Penn St, NM St, Marshall and Norfolk St. If they go undefeated (including the MAC championship game), they'll have a chance at a BCS bowl this season.
If they were to go 13-0 starting in 2014 and would beat 4 teams at Penn St's level or higher - yes, they would get one of the 4 playoff spots.

Lets find out in a few months if the BCS pulls a Boise State on Ohio. The MAC is pretty week like the WAC was with BSU.

Ohio can force the BCS committee's hand, with help. If one of the "power conferences" (would have to be Big East) finishes outside the top 16 final BCS ranking and Ohio gets inside, they are guaranteed a BCS bowl; if Ohio climbs inside the top 12 (near impossible) they are guaranteed a BCS bowl, much the way that Boise forced its way in.
If the Big East finishes inside the top 16 and Ohio doesn't finish inside the top 12, I don't see anyway the BCS takes them.

Louisville and Rutgers are sitting at 15 and 16 right now. They play each other right at the end of the season, so the loser will sink.
Hopefully the other one will slip up at least once between now and then.
I guarantee you right now that if Ohio goes 13-0 and both Big East teams have a loss, it'll be worked out so Ohio will get in the top 16 and the BE teams will be outside. People like it when this happens and it gives the little guy "a chance" at a Big Time bowl.
