My freshman year, he came to Grambling. We had a defensive front of Gary "Big Hands" Johnson, Robert Barber, Mike St. Clair, Jesse O'Neal (first three played in the NFL and O'Neal played in CFL) plus mlb Robert Pennywell (Falcons starter), James Hunter (started at Safety for Lions) and Mike Harris who played with Steelers. Payton didn't crack 100 yards...he probably had around 70 yards or so... But man, the fans left that game exhausted. We didn't have time to cheer on when GSU was on offense. Our energy had to be conserved for when Payton had the ball. All we could do was scream.. "Get Him, Get Him, Stop him, Dayum why won't he go down!"

What a great experience. I would have loved to have seen him run in person. As great a player as he was, he was a better person by all acounts. It is a shame we lost him so early.

Truly was a sad loss.
During that game, he also kicked off for them. We had a nice return about to happen on one return and he stepped in the hole and made a crushing tackle got a roar that shook Lincoln Parish. That dude was a football player. He could have played any position on the field. I know a lot of folk say Jerry Rice is the best football player to ever come out of the SWAC. I can't argue but I can't agree either. I could never put anyone over Walter Payton after seeing that game. Mind you, he only had about 69 yards...but that was the most impressive game of football I had ever seen. The man was so gifted...and determined!

You hit the nail on the head.
I could not agree with you more... he was EVERYTHING a football player should be.:hurray: I loved the way he played the game. His bobble head will forever sit a top all others in my collection....
