View Full Version : Harvard at Princeton, Mr. C's Official Game Thread
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 11:11 AM
It is two hours before kickoff, but Mr. C is here at Princeton Stadium for what should be an intriguing afternoon of football. It is my first of two games on Saturday. I'll be heading down to Towson for a CAA battle between a different group of Tigers against high-scoring Old Dominion this evening.
There is a little bit of residual water on the bleachers and on the seats for the rain of yesterday, but that should evaporate quickly on a bright, sun-kissed day. I had a stunningly beautiful, 45-minute drive over from the northeast Philly suburbs this morning. The leaves are in full color, with a predominant Princeton orange to them.
For those of you asking the question of how good Harvard is, I hope to be able to answer that question for you as I get my first look at the Crimson today. As always, it is always more fun when we get readers giving their feedback and asking questions. The more interchange, the better.

I'm curious to see exactly how good Princeton is. I've watched them twice. Against Georgetown they looked terrible, against Brown they looked dominant. I'm pretty sure I know how good Harvard is.

I think Princeton is starting to improve. This is a young team that is going to keep getting better, though Harvard will be quite the task today. If you ask the Harvard people ... they think they are pretty good (laughs).
Enjoy the game Bulldog.

Well, I'm relying on you because I'm watching Yale-Penn

We're about 40 minutes from game time now, with both teams going through pre-game drills.
One of my favorite things about coming to Princeton Stadium is the anticipation of what great homemade soup they will have in the press box (maybe the best press box in FCS, BTW). Today, in "honor" of Harvard, it's New England Clam Chowder, with big chunks of Princeton Orange Carrots included. As good as always. There are also the Princeton boxed lunches (today, I'm having a chicken salad sandwich, with sea salt chips and the famous Princeton bake shop chocolate chip cookies. No complaints here.

Understand. Are you are Franklin Field, or watching on TV? Keep me updated on scores from that one.

TV. I live in Arizona. I'll update in the week 8 score thread.
Yale's QB injured and they really have no back up so it doesn't look good for us unless we can run the ball and so far, Penn is dominating the line of scrimmage.

Hey, Phoenix to Philly is doable for a Saturday game. Last time I was in California, my connecting flight in Phoenix got delayed for hours.

By the way. The game is at at the Bowl.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 12:40 PM
The Penn-Yale game is an important one in these parts, considering Princeton, Penn and Harvard are the only three undefeated teams in Ivy League play.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 12:41 PM

You are right. I heard that there was a huge amount of folks on the guest list for Connecticut-born Penn coach Al Bagnoli (as there always is). Should have remembered that, considering I was at Franklin Field for the Yale-Penn game last season. The Yale fans booed the Toast Toss at the end of the third quarter.

October 20th, 2012, 12:47 PM
Once again, I am shaking my head at an Ivy League band. Harvard is disparaging Winnie the Pooh.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 12:48 PM
"Bacon and Pancakes will set you free," is slogan as Princeton's band takes the field. Again, I am clueless. But then, the Princeton band has never been the same after that encounter (and beating) they took down at The Citadel a few years ago.

We're used to it. I've been going to Yale games since 1959. I don't remember them or any Ivy save Cornell, ever having a regular band.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 12:54 PM
We have survived the bands (at least for now) and heard the national anthem. Football is six minutes from kickoff.

I wonder who has the worst Ivy League band? My vote would be Princeton. Nerd humor at its worst.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 12:57 PM
Cool video, complete with tigers in the jungle to send Princeton onto the field.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 01:01 PM
Captains are on the field. Princeton wins the toss, defers to the second half. Harvard will get the ball first.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 01:04 PM
The opening kickoff is being delayed because they can't find a game ball. Pretty amazing.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 01:04 PM
Finally, we have a football.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 01:05 PM
Ball taken on the Harvard 9 and returned to the 27. First down Harvard.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 01:08 PM
Play action to All-American TE Kyle Juszcyk, who bowls over defenders to the midfield stripe. Chapple is rushed heavily and almost throws a pick into the line on the second play. And then a false start for Harvard, followed by a swing pass to the Princeton 49. 3rd and 9.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 01:09 PM
From the double TE set, the other TE, Cameron Brate, is a yard short after a catch. The Crimson go for it on 4th and one and Chapple sneaks for the 1st down at the 39.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 01:12 PM
Big hit by Greg Soterreanos on a Chapple option on 2nd down and another big hit on Treavor Scales on 3rd down. 4th and one and a pass is knocked away by Mandela Sheaffer. Princeton ball at the Harvard 31. 11 minutes left.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 01:13 PM

Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 01:13 PM

Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 01:22 PM
Princeton kickoff return to the 18.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 01:23 PM
Weird set. Three players spread far right, three more spread far right, three linemen in the middle and a run up the middle to the 23.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 01:24 PM
Offsides Harvard. 2nd and inches.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 01:25 PM
Same formation and a shovel pass is stuffed. 3rd down is back to conventional football and Harvard holds. Punt time on 4th down.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 01:25 PM
The punt is blocked. Harvard ball at the Princeton 16. D.J. Monroe on the block, Jaron Wilson on the recovery.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 01:27 PM
TD pass on first down to Juszczyk for 16 yards on a delay route. Harvard 14, Princeton 0. 6:32 left in the first period. I think I'll refer to Juszczyk as KJ the rest of the day. The best player in FCS needing to visit Vanna White to buy a vowel since Villanova's Matt Szczur.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 01:34 PM
Princeton used a nice completion to get out of its own end and move to the Harvard 45.
Mr. C

First Quarter ends.
Harvard 14, Princeton 0.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 01:41 PM
I know that this is a young Princeton team that the Crimson is playing, but Harvard is pretty impressive, particularly on offense.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 01:44 PM
False start on Harvard. Personal Foul (face mask) on Harvard as Chapple is intercepted out of bounds. 1st and 25 at the 33.

Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 01:54 PM
Some mix-ups on alignment for Harvard on 3rd down, but Princeton doesn't take advantage. A Michelson pass is almost picked off and a punt gives the Crimson the ball at their own 12. 12:04 left in the half.

Big hits on Michelson and Princeton must punt again. Harvard is looking so, so impressive.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 02:09 PM
Harvard on the move again on its next drive. Andrew Berg almost broke one after a catch to the Princeton 37. Brate then catches one over the shoulder on a perfect throw by Chapple to the 2.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 02:10 PM
Chapple runs for a TD, but holding negates it.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 02:11 PM
Chapple takes a huge hit from Alex Polofsky on a blitz to force 3rd and goal from the 9. Time Out Harvard No. 1 with 2:51 left in the half.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 02:13 PM
A lesser team would probably have given up 40-plus points to this Harvard team in the first half.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 02:15 PM
Poor decision by Chapple and he forces an interception into double coverage in the end zone. Princeton holds to keep it a 20-0 game.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 02:17 PM
Another impression on Harvard. Defensively, this team looks mean and is very aggressive. The Crimson hits very hard.
Mr. C
October 20th, 2012, 02:18 PM
Harvard's Zach Hodges just blew up a well-designed jet sweep-reverse for a huge loss to force another Princeton punt.

Epperly runs to the 36, then hits his man for a TD in the end zone. Contact between the receiver and DB. Penalty flag is for illegal substitution on Harvard. 13 seconds left.

These are two very solid football teams. Not sure if the both should be ranking, i know you're being sarcastic, but they shouldn't be ignored either.

Wow. Just wow.
Cannot say how proud of the guys I am. They never gave up. Looked like it was going to be a blowout but they never stopped playing.
One of the best games I've been to on any level. When the backup QB came on, thought it was over. That kid will remember today for the rest of his life.

Best Princeton comeback since they beat Yale 35-31 in an epic 1981 game.

I think Harvard is an incredible team that just left enough of an opening for an up and coming Princeton squad to storm back. Harvard has some serious NFL talent at certain places (start with that incredible TE Kyle Juszczyk).

Kind of like a certain third-string QB from Harvard a few years back.

I'm extraordinarily proud of the Tigers today. Everything had to fall into place in the fourth quarter, and it did. Just goes to show that you CAN come back from a 34-10 deficit against a (maybe not for long) ranked team.

This was simply incredible to watch in person. My 16-year-old daughter was taking photos for a football game for the first time and it definitely left an impression on her, too. Now I have to put that game into words. One of the best comebacks I've ever seen and against a Harvard team that is scary good. With the way Towson was knocking at the door against Old Dominion, I thought for a few minutes I might get two incredible comebacks in one day. I can't tell you how draining those games were to watch.

I'm sure Go...gate has a different view, but in my mind it should never have happened. Yale had a 4th and 2 at the Princeton 20 yard line up 31-28 with 2 minutes, maybe less left in the game, and Princeton either out of timeouts or only one left. Rich Diana had already rushed for 220+ yards. And the Yale defense had not stopped Holly and Graham the whole second half. Everyone knew that Yale would give the ball to Diana to try and get the 2 yards and clinch the game. Everyone except Cozza who foolishly called for a FG attempt, which would have put them up by only 6 against a team who was unstoppable at that point.
Of course the FG was missed, Princeton went right down the field and scored the TD for the win. I won't even complain about the bogus interference call in the end zone against Yale because the Tigers would have scored anyway.
Ruined what should have been an undefeated season for Yale........not that I remember much about the game.

I'm not sure about Yale. Don't know how they won yesterday, but they were a bad team when I saw them against LC. At least Princeton was going to make a game of it vs Harvard (though not win), I doubt Yale will make a game of it against the Johnnies.

At halftime of the Lehigh game, I saw Harvard 20, Princeton 0, and I saw the Tigers going absolutely nowhere, so I shut it off, wondering "Why am I watching a game where Harvard has a three-score lead?" Then I come home, and I see the score. Absolutely stunning.
There were some signs that Princeton might have a nice season when I saw them play Lehigh, but the horrible loss to Georgetown seemed to say, "same old Tigers". Now it's clear, though, that this Princeton team is different, and seem awfully well situated to win the Ivy League title.

Having thought about it overnight, this is the worst Harvard loss in my lifetime in terms of chokes. Worse than 2000 Cornell, where we took a whole half -- not just 11 minutes-- to blow a four-touchdown lead.

It was a lot like Yale's loss to Princeton in '81 (all the Princeton people seem to say that yesterday's game is their biggest upset since then). A superior team that hasn't been pressed much all year blows a big lead, loses the momentum, makes some crucial mistakes, and has one critical 4th down coaching decision that could have saved the day. Oh, and forgets how to play defense for a half.

I'm a big believer in teams needing to "learn how to win", and in the G'Town game I just felt like they hadn't learned how to win yet, and it seemed like it was the type of loss that could throw everything off the rails. I couldn't be more pleased to be wrong, though.
I'm not surprised they made the game vs. Harvard a game, since they are their biggest rival after Yale, and as you point out, they beat you guys handily, and gave Georgetown and us all we could handle. But after falling behind so far, who could see in them the fortitiude to come down from so far back? Few teams can, in all honesty.

The loss to Georgetown wasn't a horrible loss. Georgetown hit a field goal at the end to win a very tight game that Princeton showed some promise in. If it hadn't been for Princeton's kicking game, the Tigers would have won that one.

You would think it would be Columbia, but Columbia fans, for me anyway, are surprisingly annoying.
I never pull for any other Ivy team to win the league. I only hope Penn does not.
