Always a chance. This looks like a trap game to a lot of GSU fans I think. That being said, Purple is least manly of all the colors in the rainbow.

GSU hasn't been putting as many points on the board as they have in the past. If FU can get their offense back on track they have a chance at the upset, but I wouldn't put any of my money on it.

Typically this would be a perfect trap game scenario.
However, this is Hate Week in Statesboro. It's Furman, we never overlook this game. There's a sign in the locker room with the team goals, and since Coach Monken got here, one of the things on that list is Beat Furman.
Should be a good game.

There's always a chance. Furman has the team to do it if they catch GSU on a bad day. But it's less likely than not.

As somebody mentioned earlier, this has all the earmarks of a trap game for GSU.
However, if you look at the last 5 quarters these two teams have faced each other going back to the 4th quarter in Greenville in 2010 and the meeting in Statesboro last year GSU has put up 71 points... let that sink in a moment.
IMO it is a bad matchup for Furman. Furman is thin (and has been the past two years) on the d-line and isn't that strong on the outside defensively. GSU just destroyed Furman on the outside in Statesboro last year with speed option and jet toss plays. Furman is strongest when Williams can run in the middle- GSU has been extremely tough against the run.
GSU should win this one as long as they don't have stupid turnovers and mental lapses which result in big plays. I think it will be closer than last year- along the lines of 27-31 to 10-17.

As an App fan, of course would like to see it, but just don't think it will. After the CCU and UTC games for FU it doesn't look good this season.
The only "if", is if GSU reverts back to fumbling 10 times or so.

AGS, but don't even expect this one to be close for all the reasons Blueballs states. If Coastal could beat Furman (and CCU looked weak against App) I doubt they will hang with GaSo for over a quarter.

Thought at the beginning of the year that Furman might breakout and make the playoffs, man was I wrong, last week the playoffs started for them, and Chatt destroyed them in the second half, don't give them much of chance against GS

After the Citadle debaucle and a close game with Wofford I am leary for the next few weeks untill we get to Howard. Yes I know that both Wofford and the Citadle run the option and they were defensive games but I take no one lightly this year. That said GSU wins this one by 3 TDs..................;)

They also need to hope GSU plays like they did against El Cid. Don't get me wrong, this game scares me as much as all of em, but I think our boys will be ready and focused. As long as we aren't looking ahead to Chatty and App I think we win by 2-3 scores.

This is what scares me. With the exception of last year, it seems like whichever team has nothing to lose in this series ends up winning. 2007, GSU wins the conference and secures a playoff spot with a win. Furman comes out victorious and knocks GSU out of the playoffs even though they don't make it in either. 2008, Furman needs a win to make the playoffs. GSU wins with Lee Chapple throwing for something like 300 yards. 2009, GSU needs the win to make the playoffs. Furman is already eliminated, but leads for most of the game and almost wins on a hail mary pass. Whoever is playing the underdog always seems to get a big boost in this game.

What's incorrect about my statement? Furman had a small blip of activity circa mid 2000, but they've been irrelevant otherwise. And are currently a shadow of their former program. Beautiful place to attend a game as long as you don't look on the field.

Irrelevant since Debusk. Unless you consider irrelevant a school without a team, then your statement is wrong. Consistently in the playoffs from 99 through 2006. Top five ratings quite a few of those years. One NC appearance, and one semi-final appearance, And we aren't D2.
Of course, those without a team probably don't know.
Now we are certainly not the program we used to be. But that is not what you said. A national championship appearance 12 years after Debusk is not irrelevance nor is it a blip.

Sure guy, but then there's this:
"-- The Georgia Southern and Furman series have been completely dropped, making it easier for Charlotte to schedule at least five FBS foes at home. Charlotte had games scheduled with Georgia Southern in 2014 (home) and '15 (away); with Furman in '14 (away) and '16 (home)."

It took a Woffy grad to actually answer the question for me. UNC Charlotte Golf Clap Annex is not the same as Queens College. It is just the College of Queens.
I'm glad I got that cleared up, since I wouldn't want to insult the significant population of pillow biters in Charlotte by associating them with the wrong community college.

My guess before the game was 28-13 with GSU taking over in the fourth quarter. Furman can play with anybody in the FCS for three quarters. They just simply cannot get enough offensive consistency to give the defense a rest.

The GSU holder was hurt on a previous play. A replacement bobbled the next hold, resulting in a missed extra point. After a couple of missed kicks, Monken didn't want to see any more goof ups. Running the ball straight ahead on a 2 point attempt is safer and gives Furman a chance to make a stop if they can. Monken just didn't want to end the game on another kicking snafu.

The first XP was blocked. GSU had a 3rd down at the one with 20 seconds left. 98 percent of coaches would take a knee. Game over. GSU or rather Monken elected not to and scored. Not the right thing to do necessarily but ok, it's football. The 2 point conversion was classless. No way anyone can justify that. Fwiw, Furman could have scored again on WCU and PC, the only 2 games we won but chose to take a knee inside the the five in both games. In fact in the PC game FU took 2 knees to run out the clock as they shoudl have.

I am not going to spend a lot of time on this because in the larger picture it doesn't matter.
I am always surprised how humans (including myself) will accept arguments to justify their view of the world and ignore the obvious to do it. Whether Monken had the things mentioned above in his mind or whether he made them up later is really irrelevant considering the perception of the act is going to be poor sportmanship. I, personally, have never witnessed a team go for two with 20 seconds left in the game and a three score lead. I would think most coaches would refrain from that under just about any circumstances. In fact, I think in the history of football most coaches have refrained from exactly that type of action. But as I said, it is not really that important. I am certainly going to fret less about whether Monken flunked sportmanship class than just how far the Furman program has been diminished. It has certainly been a long year.

I think Monken was trying to send a message to the kicking team, not Furman. Special teams missed 2 kicks at this game and they've been a worrisome spot all year. I won't claim to know what goes on in the coach's head, but I think he was telling the field goal unit "you messed up and cost us points. I won't let you hurt the team, so if you can't do your job, I'll send somebody else out there to do it for you." I really believe that he was trying to motivate his players and was not worried about Furman at all.

What's with all the whining on the UFFP ? I can understand not being happy about GSU running the final play, but why complain about the 2PC? It's one freakin' point.
And all those comments about how they have never seen anything so disgraceful and classless like that in the SoCon? Were they not fans in 2000 when Ivory scored a long TD late in the 4th quarter when Furman had a 38-10 lead over GSU? Does no one remember Jerry Moore going for it on fourth down against Wofford when they have a 56-24 lead about half way through the fourth quarter?

We ran B-Back dives and QB keepers.
Rubbing their nose in it would have involved us pulling out some trick plays or throwing another bomb. As for the 2pt conversion, our kicking game was awful yesterday. Running the conversion was the safer play for us, plus it regained the point we left on the field with the previous horrible PAT attempt.

1. We have Wofford, USC-Upstate, Spartanburg Methodist College, Converse, Spartanburg Community College, and for good measure, the Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic. That qualifies Spartanburg as a college town to me, but that's neither here nor there.
2. I am fully aware that there's more to life than football. In addition to football, I also enjoy movies, TV, music, and those clubs with the lady dancers. Oh, and there's also that work thing- I spent 85 hours with that this past week.
3. But why even come to a game if you're gonna leave at halftime- with your team winning 7-3 to boot? What a waste! Must be those dumbass frat guys that can't wait to start drinking. They'd be better served to stay for the rest of the game and support their classmates.

A college town is better defined by what impact the school has on the town. Would the town be what it was without the school being there? Statesboro would still be there, but no way would it be experiencing the kind of growth it is without the school being there and making the impact that it does. In a true college town, you see the touch of the school wherever you go.
Would Greenville be what it is without Furman? Would Spartanburg be what it is without Wofford and all those other schools?

Furman is guilty of it themselves in the past. In 2000 they won 45-10 and were running Luis Ivory at the end of the game when we hadn't been able to stop him all day. Their fans weren't worried too much about class on that day were they?
If it upset them enough, they can use it as motivation next year. Hell we hung 50 on them last year, typically that should be enough to get them fired up.

I'm from the Upstate, come from generations of folks from the Upstate and though we have no ties to Furman, we do admire the school's traditions, etc. That said, seems like every third person we ran into in Greenville was from somewhere up north. And on campus Friday and again Saturday it seemed I saw more car tags from New York and Massachusetts than I did from South Carolina.
And, of course, the ever present Ohio tags. Sometimes I wonder if there's anyone left driving around up there. They all seem to be trying to get in front of me so they can make a right turn without a blinker and make me have to slam on the brakes.
I digress
At the end of the day, I was surprised Monken went for 2. But I seriously doubt he meant it as an insult. The guy is a competitor, but he's also always spoken respectfully of the rivalry with Furman and seems to me to respec tthe game of football.
My, what a long post. Adios.

This is where SD is calling us (GSU/APP) low-class, but in the classiest way possible. I would tell you that you can take your Gouda and your Bordeaux and shove them straight up you a$$, but that might reinforce your stereotype. On the other hand, that might be the way private college frat people choose to do their "butt chugging." If that's the case, do you have to let the wine breathe before sending it down below?
1) Never said that, you're reading comprehension is terrible
2)Butt chugging definitely took place at UT Knoxville. a Public school.
A better comparison would have been that the people who go to Alabama at Tusculusa have a different mindset culturally than that of those who go to, say, Connecticut or Marquette.

Would Spartanburg be what it is without Wofford and all those other schools?
the answer is no, and you seem to be the only one who got my point.

He also said "took play" instead of "took place" after insulting my reading comprehension. Also, I don't "go to Alabama at Tuscaloosa," I just happen to live there. To take a play from your book "I never said that I go to Alabama at Tuscaloosa." You incorrectly inferred that, as you do most things.
Oh, you silly S.D.

I am drunk as hell, and just wondering around the forum, but would like to take this time to thank Georgia Southern for dismissing Chris Hatcher to Murray State.......................

If I went into a British back-ally and beat a cockney speaking child senseless and asked him questions about astrophysics, what he said would be more coherent then whatever thoughts you post.
Your reading comprehension is TERRIBLE.
What the Hell are you talking about? I never said you went to college in Tuscaloosa. I don't give a **** about you. Quit PMing me asking me for pictures, I'm going to notify the FBI.

Best thing we have ever done. Had we had an AD that wasn't a functioning retard, he would have never been hired in the first place, and sure as hell wouldn't have been given three years.

I don't know how college town could possibly be an insult on a CFB messageboard.
Universities in non college towns blow C#$%.

Best thing ever? Better than hiring Erk Russell? Better than recruiting players like Ham and Peterson and Jayson Foster? Better than hiring PJ?
Hatcher is a good coach. He's proving that now. Deck was stacked against him at GSU.
But, with that said, I am glad the option is back.

ODU is decent. We try to make it resemble a college town campus ,but there's only so much you can do when you are located in big city.

Umm, how is he proving it now? Murray State is 3-4 right with the the tough part of their schedule ahead. Hatcher is going to be lucky to win 5 games this season.
