August 2nd starts camp for the Georgia Southern football team under new head coach Brian VanGorder. Lofty expectations in Statesboro following last year's loss to the Bobcats of TxSt-San Marcos in the playoffs. Best of luck to the Eagles this year!

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern head football coach Brian VanGorder officially opens his first fall camp this week as the 90-man roster reports on Wednesday (Aug. 2).
The Eagles will go through the first of 29 practices on Thursday afternoon (Aug. 3), in preparation for the September 9th season-opener at Paulson Stadium against Central Connecticut State. Those members of the squad not reporting this week will begin August 15th, the next practice following the first day of classes. Georgia Southern is not scheduled for 2-a-day practices this fall.
Beginning its 25th year of modern-era football (235-76-1 record since 1982), Georgia Southern has qualified for the NCAA I-AA playoffs 16 times. One more appearance could tie the Eagles for the all-time record (17 by Eastern Kentucky). Picked to finish third in the SoCon preseason poll, the Eagles return 14 starters and 42 letterwinners from last year’s 8-4 squad.
Six Eagles were named to the preseason All-Southern Conference team: Lance Wayne (center), John Mohring (unanimous pick at linebacker) and Charrod Taylor (defensive line) were First Team picks while Russell Orr (offensive line), Brandon Jackson (defensive back) and Jayson Foster (wide receiver and return specialist) earned Second Team accolades.
In addition, Mohring (Second Team), Wayne (Honorable Mention) and Foster (Honorable Mention) were named to the Don Hansen Football Gazette Preseason All-America teams.
According to VanGorder the coaching staff is anxiously awaiting the start of fall camp. The staff’s summer schedule has been busy getting organizing and preparing for this day.
