He died of an irregular heartbeat brought on by his being born with an enlarged heart

I was wondering about something. Could his playing football have brought his death on faster than would have been the case if he did not play? Or would this have happened regardless? I know that there are risks associated with playing sports. I would think that if it was thought that football was putting him at more risk that doctors would not clear him to play. But maybe his heart condition was unknown until he died.
