New I-AA Players

As of right now, I haven't heard of any new players coming in for practice at McNeese St. The last transfer we got was Hammond Thomas, a WR from Kansas St. I'm really not sure how much he contributed last year. I do know he got on the field, but not very much.

Only two for the Kats. Akeem Retig and Nick Grimes are both on the two-deep. Grimes at center and Retig at OG. We'll see how these two develop and if they can make a difference...

Assuming you're talking about I-A transfers, the only ones I know of for Southeastern are the two RBs we had at mid-term, Jay Lucas (Texas A&M) and Kendrick Perry (Ole Miss). As for personal expectations, if they both stay healthy, they'll be among the premier running backs in the Southland Conference. The good thing is Lucas has three years of eligibility left and Perry has four.

TE Louis Irizarry 6'5 252 (Ohio State) - one of the most sought after TE's coming out of HS (#2 rated) from Youngstown Ursuline (teammate of Griz QB Swogger), Irizarry will be a great pass catching TE and despite his size, will often be split in the slot because of his speed.

WR Miles Williams 6'1 195 (Michigan State) - also from Youngstown, Williams should emerge as one of YSU's leaders at WR. Was rated #25 WR in the nation coming out of HS. Also runs a 4.3 40.

These 2 will come in and make an immediate impact

Bobby Washington...a running back from NC State who was on the opposing sideline last season. He's expected to get a good deal of carries, but as far as I know the incumbant RB...Mark Dunn, is still the #1 guy as of right now.

Craig Chambers

Craig had an excellent spring and should start at one of UM's wide receiver spots.

2005: He was the second-leading receiver for the University of Washington Huskies last season with 31 receptions for 573 yards and a team-high six receiving touchdowns. His 36 points ranked him second (tie) on the team in scoring.

2004: Chambers was also second on the team in receiving (19 catches for 408 yards and two touchdowns) in 2004 as a redshirt freshman despite playing in only five games. He was tabbed Washington's Most Outstanding Freshman that season. He had career-highs of eight catches for 189 yards versus Cal in 2004.

2003: A redshirt at the University of Washington.

Josh Swogger

After a very impressive showing this past spring, Josh earned the 2006 starting job.

Washington State: He transferred to Montana from Washington State, enrolling in January of 2006. He passed for 1,826 yards and 17 touchdowns in three seasons at WSU.

2005: He played in three games last season for the Washington State Cougars and completed 9-of-18-0 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown.

2004: Swogger started the first six games of the season for the Cougars and was 91-of-193-7 for 1,283 yards and 13 touchdowns. At one point that year he threw 93 consecutive passes without an interception. He was named the Pac-10's offensive player of the week for his performance against Arizona, when he passed for 240 yards and three scores, including the game-winner (20-19) with 53 seconds to go. He missed the last half of the year with a foot injury he suffered against Stanford.

2003: He played in nine games at WSU as a redshirt freshman, completing 35-of-69 passes for 396 yards and one touchdown.

2002: He delayed enrollment at WSU until January of 2002 and was a redshirt.

Reggie Bradshaw

Reggie had an excellent spring and will back up Griz senior Walter Payton Award candidate Lex Hilliard.

2005: He was at the University of Louisville but was injured and did not have a carry.

2004: He played in 11 games at Louisville and rushed for 116 yards and a score (against Army).

2003: He was a 2003 redshirt at Louisville.

Sam Wilson 6-4, 285 DT/NG transfer from Southern Miss has four years of eligibility remaining. Because of the youth along the defensive line. Wilson will challenge fellow freshman Justin Brown at DT and backup senior Wesley Bray at NG. In the past Furman likes to rotate defensive lines Wilson is the missing piece to make these rotations work.

Chris Stone 6-1, 185 FS transfer from Clemson has three years of eligibilty remaining. Stone played wide receiver, quarterback and free safety during his prep career. Chris broke his hip after leading Eastside to a 6-0 start playing both ways quarterback/free safety. Furman is very deep at both safety positions but Stone should be a great asset on special teams for 06.

#2 Brandon Jackson - DB - So, 6-0, 185 (Central Michigan)
This year: Had a great spring. Is already slated as one of the starting CB's and received second team All-Southern Conference preseason.

At Central Michigan: Played in nine games as a true freshman, starting the last four… made 10 tackles and broke up a pass…

HS: Lettered in football and track/field… two-time All-Broward County selection… all-state in football his senior year… team captain… All-Broward County honors in track… earned all-state honors in the 4x100 relay, 200 meters and 4x400 relay…

#6 Lamar Lewis - RB - Jr, 5-9, 200 (Florida State)
This year: Is expected to challenge for the starting spot this year.

At FSU: Played two years for the Seminoles… played in 10 games his sophomore year… rushed for 50 yards and a touchdown on the year… returned three kickoffs, averaging 19.7 yards per return… played in seven games his freshman year, including the Gator Bowl versus West Virginia… career-high six carries for 23 yards and a touchdown… kickoff return for 17 yards against North Carolina State… helped FSU win the 2005 ACC title…

HS: Posted more than 1,000 yards receiving and 23 touchdowns during his final two years… during his senior year caught 27 passes for 507 yards and seven TD… was ranked as the 12th best receiver nationally by rivals.com… First Team All-State… team MVP his senior year… two-time all-conference… pressed into quarterback duties his junior year, passing for more than 600 yards… rushed for another 400 yards and 10 touchdowns… that year caught 10 passes, three for a touchdown… played for coach Marty Lee… lettered in football, basketball and track…

#45 Tavares Kearney - LB - Fr, 6-1, 215 (Georgia)
This year: Believed to have a chance in working himself into a starters roll in a OLB roll but is expected to see a great deal of playing time.

At UGA: Redshirted

HS: Lettered in football and track… All-Dekalb County… CSS ‘Defensive Player of the Year’… was ranked 32nd nationally among linebackers… played for coach Bill Ballard…

#65 Dio Herrera - OL - So, 6-3, 309 (Mississippi St.)
This year: Most people believe that he could work himself into a starter roll at Left Gaurd. Adds much needed depth.

At Mississippi St: A two-year member of the program… played in five games as reserve at both center and offensive guard… redshirted in 2004… played in five games last season… 28 snaps against Murray State and three knockdowns… 35 plays and two knockdowns against Auburn… also saw action against Florida, Arkansas and Ole Miss… named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll both years…

HS: Helped HS team to consecutive 9-2 records and a district championship… Broward All-Star team captain… First Team All-State… ranked among the ‘Top 100’ offensive linemen coming out of HS… ranked 91st overall from the state of Florida… selected captain of the Broward County All-Star team that played in the Dade-Broward All-Star Game…

#75 Brad Williams - OL - Jr, 6-5, 290 (Central Florida)
This year: Is expected to be in the running for the starting job at Left Tackle. Adds much needed depth

At Central Fla: A three-year member of the Golden Knights program… redshirted in 2003… did not see any game action in 2004 or 2005…

HS: Helped Vidalia win the Region 3AA title his junior and senior years… team co-captain… named All-State by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Savannah Morning News… also earned All-State accolades by the Coaches Choice… graded out at 83 percent his senior year… two-time all-region selection… lettered in football and baseball…

#78 Jamarcus Johnson - OL - Jr, 6-5, 285 (Clark Atlanta)
This year: Is believed to add depth and size.

At Clark Atlanta: Played one year at Clark-Atlanta and at Gordon College in Burnsville

HS: Lettered in football (3) and basketball (2)… played on the football team that qualified for the state playoffs all four years

Liberty University head football coach Danny Rocco has announced the addition of three new players to the team’s roster asformer Pittsburgh running back Rashad Jennings, former Virginia Tech linebacker Stevie Ray Lloyd and former East Carolina offensive lineman Zach Davis have transferred to the university for the spring semester and all will be eligible to compete next year.

Zach Davis, OL, r-So., 6-4, 274, Jacksonville, Fla.
Davis is transferring to Liberty from East Carolina where he played all 11 games this past season as a redshirt freshman. His primary responsibilities were as a member of the special teams where he blocked on extra point attempts and on the field goal unit. Davis also was a reserve member of the offensive line, helping the Pirates average 137.5 yards rushing per game, while the team finished the year with 17 rushing touchdowns.

Davis played his prep football career at Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Fla. where he was named to the first-team Class A All-State squad by the Florida Sports Writer’s Association and was clocked at the 4.9 in the 40-yard dash.

An exercise science major, Davis was named to the ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll during the spring of 2005, while the offensive lineman comes from an athletic family as he is the son of former Major League Baseball pitcher Storm Davis.

Rashad Jennings, RB, So., 6-1, 235, Forest, Va.
Jennings is transferring to Liberty from Pittsburgh where he finished second on the Panther’s roster by rushing for 411 yards and a touchdown as a true freshman. He led the squad by averaging 51.4 yards rushing in eight games, including a season-best 102 yards and a score against Cincinnati.

Jennings started the season opener against Notre Dame and rushed for 29 yards on seven carries in his first collegiate game. The rookie became just the fourth true freshman to start a season-opening game at Pittsburgh (also Tony Dorsett (1973), Brandon Williams (1998) and Raymond Kirkley (2001)).

Jennings is no stranger to the greater Lynchburg area as the running back recently finished up a stellar career as a two-year starter at tailback and linebacker at Lynchburg Christian Academy. He rushed for a combined 3,287 yards and 56 touchdowns and was a two-time first-team All-Virginia (Division 2), two-time first-team All-Virginia Independent Conference and two-time Lynchburg News & Advance all-area selections.

Stevie Ray Lloyd, LB, r-Jr., 5-11, 234, Lynchburg, Va.
Lloyd is transferring to Liberty from Virginia Tech where he played five games this past season, helping the Hokies to a 11-2 overall record, including a 35-24 victory over 15th-ranked Louisville in the Toyota Gator Bowl.

Last year, Lloyd saw action in all 13 games, recording 11 tackles as a redshirt freshman, seeing significant playing time as a member of the Hokies’ special teams unit, while also serving as a reserve member of the linebacking corps.

Lloyd will be returning home to the Lynchburg area where he was a standout linebacker and fullback at Jefferson Forest High School. He was an all-area, all-district, all-region and all-state selection as a linebacker during his senior season as he finished the year with 165 tackles, nine sacks, seven fumble recoveries and two interceptions.

Lloyd finished his prep career with 477 tackles, helping him receive such honors as Seminole District Defensive Player of the Year and Lynchburg News & Advance Defensive Player of the Year as a senior.
