Ivy League Week 4 2012

Dartmouth at Yale - Yale is terrible this year.
Columbia at Lehigh - Lehigh too talented for the Lions to handle.
Brown at Rhode Island - Rhode Island, what has happened lately?
Cornell at Harvard - Tough call. Both have solid offenses and defenses.
William and Mary at Penn - W&M got lucky today against a transitionary member...
Princeton at Lafayette - Lafayette rallied but fell short... I'm not counting on Princeton to upset the Leopards yet. Maybe the Tigers' potential will realize come all-Ivy play.

Read about Cornell's unimpressive win over Bucknell. The Big Red had trouble in the red zone, botched both PATs, and fumbled 5 times but managed to recover all of them. And Matthews got picked for the first time this year. That said,the defense played well again. I think Harvard will take this one, although they may not reach 30 points this time.

How bad is Lafayette-Princeton? Let's just say... COLUMBIA has a better winning percentage against Princeton.

In fact, of all the teams that have played Princeton ten or more times, only THREE have a worse mark than Lafayette:

Stevens Tech: 0-23, a series that ended in 1912 and began with the score requiring to separate columns per team.

Wesleyan: 0-13, a series that ended in 1913.

Fordham: 1-9, three losses before 1914 and the rest following Fordham's 1989 D-3 transition.

Well, Pard4Life, Princeton needs that W to get momentum for the Brown game the following week. If the Tigers can't beat the Bears at home, it'll be yet another second- division Ivy finish for the Tiggers.

Why is it that Lafayette can put the beatdown on Penn, yet can't get a win vs. Princeton? Maybe it's that submissive, safety school attitude at work. Princeton thinks they own us because, well, they DO own us. And we let them. We can't change the whole Lafayette-as-quintessential-Princeton-safety-school thing, but the Pards can - and must - change the attitude about football.

If the Georgetown friggin' Hoyas can beat the Tigers, then so too can the Meek Little Maroon Piñata. In making Ivy picks this week, I'm trying very hard to convince myself to go with the Pards. I still need a little more convincing, though.

The students won't be on College Hill - they're on fall break. With nice weather (e.g., the Penn game) and with the students on the Hill - and had we defeated Robert Morris and were going into this game 4-0 - then yes, there'd be 10,000-plus at Fisher. That's hardly wishful thinking.

But as it stands, 7,000 might even be a stretch. We'll just have to see.

The students won't be on College Hill - they're on fall break. With nice weather (e.g., the Penn game) and with the students on the Hill - and had we defeated Robert Morris and were going into this game 4-0 - then yes, there'd be 10,000-plus at Fisher. That's hardly wishful thinking.

But as it stands, 7,000 might even be a stretch. We'll just have to see.

No there wouldn't be that many at Fisher if we were 4-0. Our highest non-Lehigh games have been two Penn games, both family weekend I believe, and Liberty. Our attendance peaks early in the year and drops. Even the Colgate game, when we were 7-1, ranked, and Colgate was 7-1 and ranked, we only had 8900... at a day game. For us to hit 10k, we need at least two season of 9-2+ play and a strong season in play. I'll wager 6500 fans for Saturday.

Compare what Cornell did to Bucknell with what Harvard did to Holy Cross and a 17-point spread seems rather low, if you ask me.

Harvard has the defense to stop/limit Cornell. I do not believe the reverse to be true. Sure, Cornell *could* make a game of it, but I'm expecting Harvard to cover.

Cornell is not as good as they looked against Yale and not as bad as they looked against Bucknell.

However, Harvard is an offensive machine.

Green, I still have raw memories of a 10-game Cornell winning streak in this series. I also have raw memories of Harvard blowing a four- touchdown halftime lead in 2000. I think Harvard wins by a TD or so. We have an inconsistent pass defense. A risk against Mathews. That said, we have a superior RB this year and a good enough overall O to win.

Columbia at Lehigh - My personal fondness for the Spuyten Duyvil gridders won’t thwart this calamity. Lehigh 35-10.

Brown at Rhode Island - Did you know that Little Rhody failed to score a single point in the first sixteen games between these two (1909-1927)? It’s reassuring that Brown isn’t avoiding its in-state rival, unlike some. Brown 21-14.

Cornell at Harvard - My tingle-up-the-leg dalliance with Cornell is fading. Harvard 28-20.

W&M at Penn - Take the points here. The Bagnolis will toast Ebirt & Friends. Penn 17-13.

Princeton at Lafayette - It’s likely that they’ll tease with the notion, but the Pards can’t disperse with the Curse. Princeton 21-20.

Harvard outgained Cornell by something like 544 to 336, and Chapple outplayed Mathews. Chapple had 3 TD passes to the SAME WR in the first quarter. Pity so few people saw it live.
