UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond Football squad is slated to take on teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference in each of the next six seasons. Virginia headlines a list which includes Duke and Vanderbilt as future Division I-A opponents on the Spiders' schedule through the 2012 season.
"We are excited about the challenge of facing teams from the ACC and SEC," head coach Dave Clawson said. "These are attractive games for our players, Spider fans and future recruits."
Two of the most awaited Division I-A match-ups on the Spiders' future schedule are with Virginia in the 2008 and 2010 seasons. Richmond has faced the Cavaliers 28 times in its 123-year history with the most recent meeting dating back to Sept. 1, 2001, when it lost 17-16 in Charlottesville, Va.
Next season the Spiders return to Nashville, Tenn., to face the Commodores of Vanderbilt. In 2005, Richmond fell, 37-13, in Vanderbilt Stadium to a then-undefeated Vandy squad. Richmond is also slated to make a trip to Vanderbilt in 2012.
Richmond will open its 2006 schedule with a game at ACC-foe Duke, Sept. 2, at 6 p.m. Return trips to Duke are also on the schedule for 2009 and 2011. The 2006 matchup between the Spiders and Blue Devils will be the 11th in Richmond's 123-year history.

Listened to that one on the radio. Missed PAT late in the game.
Those are good I-A's for the Spiders IMO. :hurray:

The Mustangs play both San Jose State and San Diego State this year. I think we've got a good shot against SJSU. SDSU is beatable, but will be a greater challenge. The Vikings play New Mexico, Cal, and Oregon this year as well.
I love seeing both of my teams getting more regional and national publicity (and money) by playing 1A teams. However, I'm not sure its worth the risk to have additional losses that keep you out of the playoffs, just to play a 1A school. I think Poly could realistically go 1-1 against those schools, but PSU will probably go 0-3 (or at best 1-2 if they can beat UNM)against that level of competition.

i know the lehigh alumni is hoping for more 1-A opponents soon, especially after we beat the last one we played, Buffalo in 2003. Ive heard RUMORS, thats it, of possibly Maryland, Va Tech, Army, and Navy. I can see real possibilities for Army and Navy since they are already affiliated with the patriot league in all other sports but football. We shall see, but I myself am definitly hoping for at least one next year, especially if the addition of the 12th game happens.

I think these are the perfect BCS Opponents for UR. UVA is a traditional and of course in-state rival, and both Vandy and Duke are traditionally weaker teams from power conferences, both with similar academic profiles as Richmond. The only other school I would think that UR might consider playing is maybe Wake Forest as well, who UR has a long standing basketball series with, but I think they have their hands full with the good teams from the SoCon instead.

SHSU has played or will play Texas, UTEP, Houston, Central Michigan, ULM, ULL, SMU and Baylor in recent years...go back a little further, throw in TxA&M...

UR has the perfect 1A schedule in my mind. All winable games. All BSC opponents. UVA is an hour drive, Duke is two & half. Vandy is further, but is an easy flight. Duke & Vandy are similarly minded academically.

Yeah this is nice, but how about playing I-AA teams? Or the Patriot League more often? G'town would probably like a game with Richmond... or Lehigh... or even Lafayette, whom the Spiders seem to have trouble with. It's a nice payday, but I view this as a slap to the PL. :twocents:
Also, I've seen some PL posters contemplating I-A games vs. bigger opponents. Frankly we should be more concerned about playing and beating quality A10 teams more often and try scheduling SoCon teams.

YSU has Ohio State sometime in 2008 or 2009.
Hopefully we will get Akron [1995] or Kent St. [2003] Back on the schedule so we can embarass them.

Richmond has a PL lined up the schedule pretty much every year as far as I'm aware. Our OOC schedule according to the coaches & AD will be a 1A game, PL team & VMI every year. We have Bucknell lined up this year. Just finished the home & home with Lafayette. Not sure why there is a complaint about UR not playing a PL...since we have htem on the schedule. Those games just aren't announced as far ahead of time.
Also, it doesn't excite the fans as much. Out of the 3 OOC games, the PL matchup is by far the lowest in terms of fan interest.

Oh, well then I am mistaken.. I can see why the fan base is not intersted, but it is no doubt important to PL teams each year, especially if they are the Big 3.

Cal Poly does not annouce their future schedules, but I have heard that they are playing Idaho in 2007. I know that they have been trying to schedule a game against Fresno State for years. Pat Hills son will be a Redshirt freshman this season Cal Poly so maybe we have a better chance now.
I think it is a mistake from a marketing stand point not to annouce future schedules, especially I-A games. Look at all the excited fans in this thread about future schedules.

Well, the total schedule upgrade is what we're looking for. Colgate already has UMass through next season, Towson and Furman in the future, and having the I-A adds a nice cash bonus for Athletics. Then of course there's the traditional Ivy games. I-A's are merely part of the upgrade package, not a focus by any means.

There have been occasional rumblings about resumption of the Colgate-Rutgers series, but no resumption in many years now. I believe that there was a big falling out between the schools in '93 when Doug Graber and Rutgers ran up the score on Colgate, 68-6, in Ed Sweeney's first game as Colgate coach. Rutgers was actually driving and throwing passes in the last two minutes to get another TD and exceed 70 points. The schools have rarely played in any sport since, which is a shame. Graber is long gone and Rutgers' FB program has regained its class since his departure. I know that Greg Schiano would never pull that sh-t on an opponent, since he has been on the other side of it several times.
But I digress....
