The Red Sox inquired about Jon Lieber and were told any deal would have to include Craig Hansen or Jon Lester.

Hmmm a future all star closer or future staff ace for a has been washed up National League dwarfed 5.55 ERA

well I can see asking for a Hansen type for Abreau but Lieber lol a 5.55 ERA in the NL translates into about 7.00 in the AL

Hey, it's a negotiating tactic. Just like you see with players salaries all the time. The deadline isn't until Monday, every deal that gets done will include less than one team originally wanted & more than the other team originally wanted to give up.

And one more thing, the Phillies do need pitching so if this is true I'm glad Gillick is trying to go that path. It's not like we asked for Papelbon.

Boston has a number of untouchables.

Jonathan Papelbon SP (Closer this year only)
Jon Lester SP
Josh Beckett SP
Craig Hansen RP (future closer)
Manny Delcarmen RP
Dustin Pedroia SS/2B

Other then them names not including guys drafted this year, anyone in Boston or its system could be had for the right price.

The Phillies are evidently smoking all kinds of good stuff. They've nixed like three trades because they aren't getting the players that they want in return. Hey, wake up. You are THE PHILLIES!!!!

Well, and that Schilling guy as well - I think Boston's holding onto him as well.

Hey, it's what always happens at trade time - the Phillies don't have to trade anyone because they suck and will suck for the rest of the year regardless what they do. But for the Boston's of the world, trading at this time of year is always a seller's market and if they want to make a push for the title and take a chance on someone they'll have to pay probably more than they should for it. Outside of a fire sale at this time of year, the seller always should get more in these trades.

If say Florida said give us Schilling and Ellsbury (highly touted OF in AAA) for Willis, Boston would jump at it, However if the same offer was proposed replacing Schilling with either Papelbon or Lester no way because Boston feels like both will be just as good if not better then Willis in the long run.

Even Schilling has a price.

Also, If im Theo Epstein, I wont over pay even a little for anything because the offense is within a few runs of being the best in the majors yet again and with Wells, Clement and Foulke all nearly healthy its like aquiring 3 top level pitchers for nothing at the deadline.

Then don't worry about it - it doesn't sound like Boston needs anything and as such, they won't get anything outside of a fire sale. Other teams will have greater needs and they will make these kinds of trades. I think Boston is in a fairly good spot assuming they get into the playoffs - their short pitching staff is great for the playoffs although it could be a problem the rest of the way - but if the offense continues to carry them they'll be just fine.

Dustin Pedroia is the middle infielder of the future for Boston, though exactly where SS or 2B remains unknown. Initially Alex Gonzalez got a 1 yr non guaranteed contract for 2006 and the idea was SS was Pedroias to lose, unfortunatly he suffered a leg injury early in spring and Gonzalez got his contract guaranteed.

Now with Gonzo playing so well Pedroia is back working at 2B in AAA and will baring an injury be there in Boston next season presumebly teaming up with Gonzo for the double play combination.

Pedroia was drafted in the 1st round of 2004 out of Arizona State and moved up the ladder of the minors quickly.

What??? Are they supposed to give up a quality player like Abreu for 60 cents on the dollar because you say so? The Phillies don't need to make a trade. Their season is done and Gillick knows it. So, if you can't get quality for Abreu or Lieber or Lidle now, then don't. Wait until the offseason when it's easier to get these things done.

Thanks, we need it...:(

I just wish that there was a way to dump salary...there's no way their going to get money plus prospects from anyone...at this point I don't think they'll pull off a major deal...

Well, it is true that it is a sellers market. The Phils are hoping that someone will prostitute thier program future for some, hopefully, quick gains today. This is a golden time for teams like the Philllies to make deals to better their future. I would love to see them get a pitcher with a lot of potential like the guy from the Yanks.

Lieber and Lidle both have shown they could help a contender by giving them quality starts down the stretch. While Lieber's season as been subpar, he has a lot of playoff experience and was hurt for almost two months. He's been rested and could give a someone a great second half; however, his contract is hefty. Lidle will be a free agent. The Phils are holding the cards, they should try and squeeze as much as they can. I'd hate to see them get horsemeat for some decent players. If the deals cannot be done, now; so be it. There's the off-season.

The larger market teams are starting to hold onto their young talent. Thats not a good sign for smaller market teams
