Pirates infielder Freddy Sanchez is leading the NL in hitting and ranks second in hits with 123. Sanchez has walked only 18 times. Who was the last player to amass 200 hits in a season while walking fewer than 20 times. (Hint: He's also the only man to do so twice in his career).

It's not Rico Carty. I don't think he ever had 200 hits in a season.

Gary Templeton.

"Fewer" than 20 is the key term, because Mickey Rivers once had over 200 hits and exactly 20 walks.

Switch-hitting shortstop Garry Templeton collected 211 hits in 1979 for the Cardinals while walking just 18 times. Two years earlier Templeton (best known for being traded to the Padres for Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith) had 200 hits with 15 walks.
