Southern wins cup in SWAC
Southern University's continued dominance of the Southwestern Athletic Conference was recognized Friday as the school was awarded its fourth straight Commissioner's Cup, which goes to the best all-around athletic program in the conference.
Only two other schools have won the award since its inception in 1991-92. Otherwise, SU has been the standard, winning 11 of the 13 Cups.
"We're so pleased," Southern Chancellor Edward Jackson said as the conference's spring meetings concluded Friday at the swanky W New Orleans hotel. "We have been very, very successful. What it means for us is that, all along, the athletic program at Southern is very, very balanced. We pay a lot of attention to all of the sports, and we intend to strengthen those."
The baseball team -- powered by tournament MVP Joshua Kirk, a pitcher; Outstanding Hitter and Kevin Nelson, a first baseman; and Outstanding Pitcher Jose Pena -- won its eighth title in the last 10 seasons. The women's tennis team won its fourth straight title and eighth overall. And the women's track team, behind Outstanding Field performer Jacqueline Dix and Outstanding Track performer Erikka Thomas, won its third straight title and eighth since 1994.
