Miguel Cabrera hit his 41st Home Run tonight, pulling within 1 of League leader Josh Hamilton.
Cabrera also leads the league in RBI and Batting.

Could he be the first triple crown winner since 1967?

That would be cool. What would even be 'cooler' would be for someone in the NL to make a run at it. Pujols was once considered a threat. It's been over 70 years I believe since accomplished in the NL--Medwick of St. Louis in the 1930's??

It's not Cabrera's fault the Twins are bad. It's like saying the Bison padded their FBS wins by playing the Gophers.

I'd love to see the Triple Crown. Would it be enough to get Cabrera the MVP? My guess is that the Tigers will have to stumble into the playoffs for him to win over Trout.

That would be a cool thing to see happen. I'd also like to see someone hit .400

Even though Trout has the advantage in oWAR over everyone by far, I think Cabrera will get the MVP if he gets the Triple Crown purely on the basis of that accomplishment....playoff-bound or not.

The Triple Crown would almost certainly mean the MVP for Cabrera. Remember also that Trout and the Angels are currently not in playoff position either, so if Detroit finishes ahead in the standings, he might get it even without the Crown

What a race that was between the Red Sox, Tigers, Twins and White Sox. No wild card, no divisions. Harmon Killebrew tied Yaz in home runs with 44. I'm glad that I got to meet my favorite Twin- just a great guy.

Braun is the current NL guy most capable of pulling it off one of these years, probably . . . but I imagine a lot of people would not like to see him be the one to do it.

Same with Melky Cabrera- he took himself out of the batting title today.

Cabrera hits HR #42, ties Hamilton 6 points up in batting and 8 RBI up.

Still leading in all 3 catagories going into the final 3 games.

Hoping it's enough for MVP, as the Tigers are in the Playoffs with a win, Angels still have a longshot.

Miggy loses the batting race if he goes 0-4 and Trout goes 4-4, or Hamilton hits a couple dingers or Encarcion hits 3, or Dunn or Granderson hit 4.

Regardless of what team you cheer for, you should be cheering for a triple crown winner. We haven't had one since '67 and with today's power hitters, it's even harder than it was 40 years ago. With all of Cabrera's off-the-field issues, I'm kinda cheering for the guy to turn it around.

Or if Miggy sits tonight and Trout goes 6-6! I'm hoping he plays though as I need a few more RBI in my fantasy championship

Rangers and Angels both start before the Tigers (Rangers should be done when the Tigers start). Do you sit Cabrera if it looks like it will be impossible for him to lose the Triple Crown based on how others preform?

To me it has nothing to do with what Trout and/or Hamilton does. I play him for at least 2 at-bats only because they know for a fact they are off tomorrow and Friday and I want him getting at-bats and not sitting for 3 days. Leyland says it's up to him, Miggy says it's up to Leyland. I guess if Hamilton hits 2 homers, it could influence him to take a couple of hacks; but keep in mind if he ties for HR, he still wins the Triple Crown

No HR for Hamilton and only one hit. Right now Trout is 0-1, looking good for Cabrera.

Fantastic!!! For both Cabrera and Teddy (;-). I lived in Detroit back in the mid-1970's so they've become my "AL" team since leaving in '77. Still have my old Tigers cap from the Fydrich days. Great to see a Triple Crown, again. One of the rarest feats in baseball. Indeed, not accomplished on the NL side since 1930!

It's great to see a Tiger win the Triple Crown. I remember as a youngster see Frank Robinson and Yaz win, but there really wasn't a great a great candidate on the Tigers at the time. Kaline didn't have the power and Cash and Horton didn't have the good batting averages.

But you know Gil, it's not a real Triple Crown. xrolleyesx

Unfortunately, Teddy had help from fake philly phanatic. However, when Teddy won, so did Cabrera, and Zimmerman right after that win, hits a home run and the Nats win....coincidence?

Tremendous accomplishment! I'm glad I was finally able to have a baseball Triple Crown occur in my lifetime. I still need the horse racing one to happen though!

P.S. I still think Trout deserves the MVP. What he has done this season is phenomenal. He's not just a tremendous batter, he also is great on defense and on the base paths. Cabrera pretty much just has the bat going for him. That's why Trout has such a high WAR rating.

That's another thread, Trout had a great season, be batted .254 in September during the pennant race and in the .280's in August. Most of the High-lights I saw on sports center for the Angels were Torii Hunter. An MVP needs to excel during the pennant race or at least continue to perform at a high level. Trout's WAR is high partially to the fact he played 139 games, so averages and sabr metrics tend to be higher. I would expect his WAR to be lower had he played the extra 22 games that Cabrera played, maybe not as low as Miggy's, but lower that it is.
