to start a baseball team with. Hell, pick one batter and one pitcher. Who would it be and why?

Albert Pujols is my batter, Mariano Rivera is my pitcher, because I want a reliever, not a starter & he's the best closer out there.

David Ortiz as my hitter, as the man seems to be as clutch as a baseball player can possibly be with RISP.
For my pitcher, I want that lefty from the Twins, can't seem to remember his name and I'm way to lazy to search for it.

Santana or Liriano?
Based on his past, Santana.
Oh and thanks for getting his name for me!

Right now, I'd be tempted to take Liriano, looks like he is gonna be a beast and is much younger

Twins are my #3 team, behind Detroit and NYY. These two have more years than the greats I-Rod, Big Unit, A-Rod on those teams, plus Liriano is better than most pitchers in the MLB. Mauer hasn't even got his Man-Muscles yet.

I agree with you on Liriano, but its hard not to take Pujols

Mauer is a great athlete, he was recruited as a QB at Florida St, and he could have played DI basketball too. Pujols is older, but would be a solid player to build a team around. I like Mauer's potential, doesn't have Pujols power yet, but he rarely hits popups.

Haven't seen Mauer play alot, how is he defensively, throwing out runners, etc?

Mauer does it all, he is very solid behind the plate(probably top 5). Mauer is the perfect 3 hitter but I agree it would be hard to say no to Pujols or Howard.
I'll take Howard and Liriano

Pujols or Vladamir Guerrero--an excellent hitter, and great defensive player.
As for pitching...I think Brett Myers could be another Schilling if he gets his head screwed on. His last couple outings he's been dominant.

The only thing Pujols and Vlad have in common is power. Vlad is the most undisciplined hitter I've ever seen. He strikes out alot, and most of the time, its waaaaaaaaay out of the strike zone. Pujols on the other hand, has more HR's than K's

Pujols w/o a doubt. He can rake for power and average, has a high OBP and OPS, can play multiple positions, is a solid citizen, and will play at least 15 more years at the major league level.
The only reason I would downplay Mauer is that his position tends to lead to shorter careers and more injuries.

His position leads to other positions less demanding on the knees

Derek Jeter. One of the best all around players in the game, solid on both ends of the game, and brings intangibles beyond anyone playing the game today.
(I said this just to piss off Red Sox fans xlolx

Even a Red Sox fan like me will tip a hat for Jeter. He's a great player among a team of bums.

I can never pick just one, so here's my picks of people to start a team with. I'm only selecting players 26 and under though, since I'm going to be building my team around one of the pitchers and hitters I pick.
Pitchers:
1. Francisco Liriano - He's the sexy pick right now and it's hard to argue against it. 12-2, a 1.93 ERA, a 5:1 K to BB ratio, he's only given up 8 HR and 28 earned runs so far this year....all very good stats.
2. Justin Verlander - 13-4 and a 2.69 ERA. Not a big K guy, but a solid young pitcher nonetheless.
3. Carlos Zambrano - beast of a young pitcher, 11-3 on an awful Cubs team. Walks a lot of guys, but strikes out a lot too.
4. Scott Kazmir - 10-7 with a 3.36 ERA and a 139 K's to 46 BB's.
5. Ervin Santana/Jared Weaver - either one of these two young Angels pitchers...I'd lean toward Weaver right now though.
Batters:
1. Albert Pujols - .327 avg. and 33 home runs....nuff said
2. Miguel Cabrera or David Wright - two amazing, young third baseman to handle the hot corner
3. Joe Mauer or Brian McCann - got to have a good catcher and these are the two great young ones. .375 and .344 averages respectively
4. Carl Crawford - he can do it all. He can hit for power (14 HR) or average (.305) and he's got great speed (33 stolen bases, 14 doubles, 11 triples). I think I heard too that at this point in his career, Crawford's numbers are better than a lot of hall of famers.
5. Jose Reyes - I hate the mets so I don't like having 2 of their guys on here but it's hard to ignore talent. Reyes is going to be a great leadoff guys for a long time to come. .289 avg, 8 HR's, 20 doubles, 12 triples, 40 stolen bases, and a .347 on-base percentage.

OK and I will please the guy a few posts ago.
If im starting a team I want young guys who will be the cornerstone for years to come, Sorry Mariano and Jeter.
I want guys who aren't head cases, Sorry A Rod and Manny.
I want guys who have the ability to be popular in the comunity not just on the field.
My Pitcher would be Jonathan Papelbon, who at this very moment has a shot at sweeping the awards thios year... Rookie of the Year, MVP and Cy Young, Though I sense he will win the MVP, Liriano the Cy and that kid in Detroit or Weaver the ROY.
Hitter is a more difficult decision, Yes Pujols is great, however I wouldnt choose him. I think I would have to go with Miguel Cabrera as my hitter.

Pujols & either Santana or Liriano.
But this kid Carlos Quentin for the D-Backs is the bomb! Can play all three OF positions and has 5 hits so far---3 HR's and 2 doubles---in 14 AB's. He appears to be the real deal.
Knowing the D-Backs, they'll probably trade him for some third-rate pitcher.... : smh : : smh : : smh :

Ryan Zimmerman. Clutch as they come and only 21 years old. Drove in the tying run last night in the 9th up in DC. Tends to do that a lot.

Hmm...can't believe I forgot him. He'd go with Cabrera and Wright in my list. Zimmerman is going to be a great player for a long time to come.
