SIU (0-0 1-2) @ MSU (0-0 0-3) neither team is looking very good early in the season but have to go with SIU
SDSU (0-0 2-1) @ ISU-b (0-0 1-1) ISU-b is on the rise in the conference
USD (0-0 1-1) @ Northwestern* (3-0) USD just doesn't have the team to get an FBS win this year
Prairie View A&M (0-3) @ NDSU* (0-0 2-0) easy game for NDSU, too easy would like to have seen a better match up for OOC. Hopefully the back up get a lot of good reps
ISU-r* (0-0 3-0) @ WIU (0-0 1-1) ISU-r is rolling along and WIU will merely be a bump in the road at this point
UNI (0-0 0-2) @ YSU* (0-0 3-0) Have to go with UNI in a close match. It's definitely going to be one of the better games in the conference this year.

SIU - I have trouble picking MSU to win any game the rest of the year
SDSU - Tough one! Zenner vs Bell. It could be decided by an injury to one of those players or a weird bounce, etc.
NW - Wildcats are looking to go 4-0 in non-conference play before starting the Big Ten season
NDSU - I'd sit any starter who isn't feeling 98% or better
ILL St - EIU was a rivalry game. I don't think the same rivalry exists with WIU, but it could potentially be another tough game for them after the OT game last week. This is where IL St starts proving they belong in the MVFC elite tier this year. Taking care of business.
UNI - Panthers need this one more than YSU, don't want MVFC teams knocking each other out of the playoffs

Actually, 93 games between WIU and IL St. dating back to 1904 (http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_iaa/missourivalley/western_illinois/opponents_records.php?teamid=1509) (94 after this weekend), which is the most games that Western has played against any one opponent.
The only team that Illinois State has played more than Western is Eastern, but only by 9 games (100 games total back to 1901). (http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_iaa/missourivalley/illinois_state/opponents_records.php?teamid=1006). So after this weekend, ISU vs EIU is 100 games, ISU vs WIU is 94 games.
It's a pretty big rivalry that has been fairly even over the years. Western has the lead in the series with 50 wins, 40 Illinois State wins, and 3 ties.
Plus, it's Homecoming for Western, so that'll bring in an added "excitement" to the game.

Wow, thank you for the correction and the info!
This just became that much more of a huge test for IL St. Another rival, away at their homecoming. Perhaps Western just isn't as good as Eastern this year, I don't know. But I know that records get thrown out in rivalry games.
IL St has to have this game if they want to be taken seriously in the MVFC this season.

SIU (0-0 1-2) @ MSU (0-0 0-3) The battle for the bottom of the MVFC. Lennon on the hot seat should mean something.....
SDSU (0-0 2-1)@ ISU-b (0-0 1-1) SDSU is looking better but I think ISU-B is going to be to much on the road.
USD (0-0 1-1) @ Northwestern* (3-0)This could get real ugly for USD
Prairie View A&M (0-3) @ NDSU* (0-0 2-0) Backups should see a lot of playing time. Good chance to rest up the banged up players.
ISU-r* (0-0 3-0) @ WIU (0-0 1-1)ISU-R will be on cruise control by the second qtr.
UNI (0-0 0-2) @ YSU* (0-0 3-0) This is going to be a real head knocker. Either team has the talent to win but I'm going with YSU at home. Tough call and will be Game of the Week for me.
So Far I'm 23-5. Picked what I thought would be upsets and got a few wrong.

We should have an easier time winning at Western than we did with Eastern. Both are rivalry games, but Eastern has a really gimicky offense that is going to give a lot of teams trouble this season. I wouldn't be surprised if Eastern is right there with JSU and EKU for the OVC title at the end of the year.
We have some things to fix on defense though, and we didn't really handle their scheme very well throughout the game. 22 penalties will always throw things off balance as well. Need to get that fixed.
I haven't been blown away by Western's box scores this year, but Macomb is always a pain for us to win at. I still like our chances to win by at least 14 or so.

SIU @ MSU - Good bounce back game last weekend against SEMO, MSU might be a little too banged up after opening with two FBS top 25s
SDSU @ IND ST - The two teams are looking somewhat even. I'll take the home team.
USD @ Northwestern - Yote fans, don't bother tailgating in Evanston, you won't get a parking pass. Also, downtown Evanston is kind of boring, and most the people that live there couldn't care less about the Wildcats. Pregame somewhere in the city, and take the Red/Purple Line up to Central. Also, bring cash, no ATMS at Ryan Field.
Prarie View A&M @ NDSU - Bison should try to get some style points in this game. Is Prarie View bringing their band?
Ill State @ WIU - Birds will bounce back this week with a better effort. I'll be pretty concerned if this game is decided by single digits.
UNI @ YSU - Game of the weekend in the MVFC. UNI will be fighting for its season this game, but the defense still has to be a concern. YSU needs a better performance than last week, but I think the Stambaugh factor gives them a slight, 3 pt edge in this one. Could go either way though.

Drum Corp only. Style points I don't know. As banged up as we are I'm hoping the starters only see 1 qtr of play and backups in after that.

MVFC kicks off and it should be a battleground each and every weekend...LOVE IT! Not sure on my SIU > MSU pick or even my YSU >UNI plus the Redbirds > WIU might be a tough road test for ISU. Heck, for that matter the Trees > Jacks pick is a toss-up. Think this year's Valley will be filled with tough picks every week. Not going to say YSU wins this one.. Gonna be close but it should be noted Woody that the first 2 years in the Eric Wolford era the games could have gone either way. This is by far the best team in the Wolford era now in his 3rd year. If the Guins are going to get the monkey off their back, now looks like the time.. Plus it's at home... We shalllll seeee

Nope, not yet. Even though we've beaten YSU the past couple of years. I'm not forgetting about the trip to Fargo last year, but I'm not sold because you all lost to us, SDSU, and Mo St last year as well. If you beat UNI this week then I will put you all in the MVFC contender race, right now I think you all are in the maybe group with us.

You could really say that about any team this early in the season.
But I think it's fair to say that the Pitt win puts YSU in the elite MVFC group right now. Big game coming up. Lot of season left afterward.

Yea, Eastern is looking really good this year. Honestly, we haven't looked all that great, but there have been small sparks of good performance (defense is good at takeaways, Nikko Watson can be tough to take down if he gets a little running room). I'm hoping it's more of a matter of us playing to the level of our competition, otherwise it's going to be a pretty long year again for us Western fans. IL St. has definitely looked exceptional so far this season, not entirely surprising considering they really should have made the playoffs last year, but they're looking even better this year. That being said, it's the closest conference opponent for us (3 hours down the road), a big rivalry, Homecoming, should be a big crowd....who knows. I hope it's a close, hard-fought, exciting game all the way to the end (of course, I'm hoping for a Leathernecks victory, but it'll be tough).

If YSU is unable to get a pass rush on the UNI QB, it will be a long day for the Guins. I think YSU is extremely athletic everywhere, however, there were assignment discipline issues and late reads last week. The defense is agressive and overpersued and that is where Albany outcoached YSU last week. I just can't pick the winner becuase I think it will be close. I am thinking this could be a sell out. I hear that both tailgate lots are sold out so they are opening a 3rd for this game.

Yes, additional tailgating in the m-26 lot on the corner of Fifth and Lincoln avenues.
I agree with you 100% on the pass rush. Some don't know that YSU lost 2 starting defensive linemen in the Pitt game. They were both seniors as well. Neither one has played in the last 2 weeks but I believe DT, Nick DeKraker #45 who was a defensive end last year will be back in the starting lineup. Not sure on the status of #92 DE Luis Quinones..

Well I look at it just a little differently. The Big Boys are NDSU and YSU I'd throw SIU in the mix but I don't believe they won their NC during the current/past conference affiliation. I don't consider anybody a big boy until they win a National Championship. UNI's domination of the conference is just that.

I am sure ValleyChamp and Clenz will jump all over this but I see no need. He may not want to consider us a big boy of the conference because we don't have a NC, but the fact that every single team in the conference loves to beat us more than any other team I say speaks differently. We haven't won a National Championship, but we have been successful in the playoffs. And I think everyone knows if you want to win a conference championship you are going to have to go through the Panthers.

No doubt "IF" YSU was to go 1-10 I'd want the 1 to be against UNI xbowx UNI is one of those teams year in and year out that dominates arguably the toughest conference in the 1FCS world and get's to the playoff's and blows up. This was in no way smack towards UNI, the fans or team just calling them as I see em'. xblehx

Ysu has not beat uni in the farley era. i also dont think a loss here would "smash the panthers playoff dreams"
A loss by UNI means that the Panthers couldn't lose another game for the rest of the season and make the 7 D-I wins needed. Won't smash play-off hopes, but would put Panthers against wall for all the remaining games.

Which is interesting because that would mean they're 7-1 in the MVFC and therefore one of the top 10 I-AA teams in the nation, yet they just barely meet the requirements of the playoffs.
I could definitely see a scenario where UNI, YSU and NDSU are all 7-1 in the MVFC at the end of the year, beating everyone else except losing to each other round robin.

UNI has basically played to this point a BigTen road schedule at two perennial powers one of whom was ranked. UNI acquitted themselves quite nicely. Not sure what the deal was with Central State? Maybe that game was there just in case personnel got too banged up with the First Mega Game at Wisky.
Anyway, I have to think a 6-5 UNI make the expanded field. A)Playing two Big Ten boys at there place B)MVFC has bout 3 legit championship teams and two powerhouse also-rans. The MVFC looks pretty solid this year, maybe toughest in FCS.

Southern Illinois @ Missouri St - I think the Bears could win this game but they seem to have a knack for finding a way to lose.
South Dakota St @ Indiana St - Matchup of the two top rushers in D1 right now. However I think ISU-b's D is more likely to contain Zenner than SDSU's D against Bell.
South Dakota @ Northwestern - NW is pretty good this year. I don't think this will be in doubt much past the beginning of the 2nd quarter.
Prairie View A&M @ North Dakota St - The Bison backups get a lot of time in this game in the tune up for the colossal conference matchups in the coming two weeks.
Illinois St @ Western Illinois - I still think the Necks will be better this year than a lot of people think but I think the Redbirds D has a nice bounce back game in this matchup.
Northern Iowa @ Youngstown St - This is my gut pick of the week. Nothing really to back it up with other than that both teams are capable of winning and UNI is more desperate for a win than YSU.

YSU finished 4-4 in the MVFC last year, I'm not sure why so many people have picked them to win this year. I think they will go 5-3 this year and lose games that make you scratch your head. In 2010 they were 3-8, last year 6-5, so while I see improvement, I don't see a conference champ there. NDSU fans seem to think that since they beat them last year, they must be awesome, but I don't see it. I sat there last year and watched INST beat them like dog turds in the first half and then let up and let them back into the game. I may be wrong and they may run the table, but I really didn't see anything last year that would make me think that they would be champs or co-champs this year. My pick for YSU is 5-3 in the MVFC and 8-3 overall. I think they will make the playoffs, but not MVFC champs.

They were a young team last year and young teams are prone to lapses like that. I resent the fact that so many people say "we let them back into the game" or "we played a bad game against them" to take credit away from the team that made the plays. At this level it's very difficult to play mistake free football due to the level of competition you see every week. The teams that make the fewest mistakes are generally the best teams. YSU is more experienced this year and they return basically everyone from an obviously talented team. They haven't shown those lapses yet with quality wins over Pitt and Albany so I tend to believe that they've turned a corner. Every team will have a game where they either play poorly or run into a buzz saw but I don't expect you'll see a repeat of last year where they beat the top team in the country on the road and then lose to a conference bottom feeder at home the next week.
Keep in mind their 4 FCS losses last year were by a combined 17 points. As you said they're only a year removed from 3-8 so they're still learning how to be a consistent winner. NDSU was 3-8 in 2009, 9-5 in 2010 some head scratching losses and some impressive wins, and then 14-1 in 2011 so it's possible to see that kind of ascension in just two years.

Just as YSU was 6-5 with any luck or experience they could have been 10-1. I blamed a lot of last year's blunders on coaching. This year YSU changed out some of the coaches and brought in a few more key athletes to secure so thin spots in what was fielded last year. I'm not counting my Penguins before they are hatched but it sure feels right a bought this year's team. Next year will really be awesome :)

They recruited heavily on Defense with Juco's and changed the DC to help improve it. Ysu also recruited a lot of depth in other areas with immediate impact players. The recruiting has been outstanding. As a result the Defense appears to be much better than last year.

I think a lot of us fans are high on the Penguins because we've watched how they lost those games last year. They lost 4 conference games last season by a combined 17 points with a well below average defense. Here's an example you would remember.. YSU spotted Indiana State 21 points last year and still almost won that game. Us fans feel like we have moved past spotting teams 21 and having to rely on our offense to score 40 points per game. That being said I respect you're 8-3 prediction based upon the leagues depth.

sounds like bad coaching to me.
thats like UNI....get a lead...play the entire 4th quarter (if not 2nd half...2 runs up the middle and an incomplete 2 yard pass that woulda been short anyway)....midwesterners are too nice, never want to hit someone when they are down.
For instance, im from Iowa, but teach/coach in Texas. So I still have my midwestern values...I coach middle school football, and am the offensive coordinator. We were playing a game Monday, winning 33-6 at the half against a far inferior opponent, and I was content with just doing simple dive plays all second half. I got blasted by administration for not scoring at least 3 more times. Said if I did it again, I'd lose my job. Sorry, I'd rather lose my job than be a classless A-hole, especially at this level. I'd do the same at HS or college too. Anyway, we ended up winning 33-12 but still.

So every team in the conference measures themselves by whether they beat Youngstown each year right? Every team puts their best effort into trying to win against the Penguins year in and year out?
It is literally stupid to say you don't care about a conference championship. It is easier to say that when you win the NC, but if you don't win an NC wouldn't you want to be at least conference champs instead of finishing 4th?

My point wasn't to downplay National Championships. There is nothing I want more than for UNI to win a National Championship, but to say that your team isn't trying to win a conference championship is stupid. Sure it is easy to say a conference championship doesn't mean anything if you win the National Championship, but if you can't win the NC you may as well win the conference.

Uh, no kidding. Is anyone here legitimately trying to argue that a conference title is more meaningful than a national title? I don't think so...
That doesn't change the fact that winning a conference title, especially in a league like the MVFC is very meaningful, and something to be proud of. Its one of the primary goals of any football program in any conference, and its how you measure your program with your peers.
UNI has won a lot of them in this league. And that is the reason that UNI is the biggest game on everyone's schedule year in and year out. That was the point.

It's not dumb. I think its just over your head. You're taking it way out of context... The ultimate goal is a championship. Conference titles are goals along the way.. Obviously! But every coach in the country will tell you they play and practice to win a championship and if a conference title comes before that along the way than that's great. A conference title helps with recruiting but once a conference champ gets knocked out of the playoffs their goals have fell short... I'm done fighting a fight I won't win... Im not trying to down play conference titles because I know UNI has a lot of them .. Maybe that's why you guys are jumping on me for being completely reasonable.

Most people in Ytown honestly could care less about conference championships--I certainly don't but I do understand its importance to other members.YSU has won 4 National Championships but 3 of them were when we did not belong to ANY conference and the last one was when we placed THIRD in the Gateway Conference--hey I'm sure its nice to say we're conference champs but if I told you most people in Ytown could care less I'm not saying it to be demeaning-I'm only telling the truth--we're spoiled and we want the Biggest Prize.
I completely understand. There is nothing more I want than a National Championship. I have said I would trade conference championships for that National Championship, but I will admit it is nice to be the conference champions too. Guess what that is the only way you are guaranteed to get a shot at the National Championship. I know your players would love to get a conference championship even though their main goal is the NC. I definitely understand where you are coming from. YSU fans probably value conference championships less due to being an independent for so long, I don't know.
Either way I have side tracked this thread for too long.
Here are my picks for the weekend:
SIU -- closer than you might think
Indiana State -- Being at home I think makes the difference
Illinois State -- They are too good for the Leathernecks
NDSU -- This won't be close
Northwestern -- This may be closer than you expect too

Uh, no kidding. Is anyone here legitimately trying to argue that a conference title is more meaningful than a national title? I don't think so...
That doesn't change the fact that winning a conference title, especially in a league like the MVFC is very meaningful, and something to be proud of. Its one of the primary goals of any football program in any conference, and its how you measure your program with your peers.
UNI has won a lot of them in this league. And that is the reason that UNI is the biggest game on everyone's schedule year in and year out. That was the point.
This deserves some kind of garage door/paint on the wall joke.

Wow, that's bananas. I'm not saying they couldn't cover it, but Bohl will probably call off the dogs even earlier than the Robert Morris game.

M Will is walking fine, perhaps his injury doesn't show up while walking.

That's crazy....a 53 point favorite and even ISU being a 16 point fav on the road trip to rival WIU (don't usually see that kind of action in the MVFC).
Really looking forward to Saturday's games....oh yeah! xawesomex

Got em all right except UNI. Darn Panthers!
This week: 5 - 1
Season: 26 - 8

Can someone do an official count of MVFC games, is it 33 or 34? I think I screwed up and added on in there somewhere.

Nope, not yet. Even though we've beaten YSU the past couple of years. I'm not forgetting about the trip to Fargo last year, but I'm not sold because you all lost to us, SDSU, and Mo St last year as well. If you beat UNI this week then I will put you all in the MVFC contender race, right now I think you all are in the maybe group with us.Looks like UNI got to see a lot of our "Cookie Monster".
