A 6-0 loss to Mississippi Valley State was the final straw, according to reports.

Tough deal. Liked Stump. Watched part of that game. Southern was always a wide opem O kind of tdam. He wasn't too successful making them into ground pounders.

Would be cool if Stump could be a part of the staff at The Citadel where he was an incredible running back back in the 80's. Since The Citadel runs the Wishbone, seems to me that he could be a huge benefit to their team.

Normally, I'd plea for patience in firing a coach, but I actually watched part of that debacle on Thursday.

Particularly since Everette Sands got poached away from us, we could use another strong running backs guy.

So you guys don't remember how bad Stump Mitchell was as the head coach at Morgan State, huh?

Most of us do, to say this was an hire that divided the fanbase would be the understatement of the year. I think it's telling that heading into his third year there was still no real identity to this team. We're see where they go now.

Southern University has officially parted ways with Stump Mitchell as the school’s head football coach.
In a press conference held Friday afternoon on the SU campus, athletics director William Broussard announced that Mitchell has been reassigned to another administrative position. However, Broussard declined to reveal what Mitchell’s new role would be.

I remember him from the St. Louis Cardinals days. He was a good player, too bad about getting fired. I am sure he will get another job somewhere.

It's really too bad he wasn't successful there; Stump is a man of high character. Unfortunate for both him and Southern.

I totally agree, he did a great job of changing the culture of the program off the field. Got the kids to go to class and develop. Just couldn't match that progress on the field.

Maybe they could beg on their hands and knees for the classy legend Pete Richardson to come back. What a mistake getting rid of Pete was.

I watched that game too, what a disaster in terms of quality of play from both teams. I think it was #80 for Southern, he had like 3 inelligible receiver downfield penalties. I don't know how that's possible, but he managed. That punter fumbling the ball was high comedy, especially once he took off his helmet and I saw that porn stache, I about lost it.

In current day the guy should be a hero for changing the culture in making his kids go to class, and for that he is fired? Something is wrong with this picture. Adminstrators often dont have the big picture in mind when they make these kinds of decisons. This was a premature decision in my opinion.

I've always loved Coach Rich but the end of his tenure was part of the reason why the program was in this mess. I hated the way it ended (reminded me of the Bobby Bowden deal) but it had to be done.

Odds are he was gonna be gone at the end of the year anyway. People outside of Southern don't realize the divide this hire caused amongst the fanbase and the university itself. Off the field Stump was a great guy on the field horrible, stubborn coach.

The main reason that Pete Richardson was let go was because he didn't win enough games at the end against Grambling. It didn't have to be done and it didn't have to be done with such a lack of class towards one of the classiest coaches in the country. And where did it get Southern's program? I guarantee you wouldn't be in this mess if you had handled Richardson in a proper way.

So you're saying the last few years of horrible recruiting and APR mess had nothing to do with it? And we got Stump because he was friends with our former AD, most of the school/fanbase was divided over the hire.
