For four years, the PFL champion met the Northeast Conference champion in what was called the Gridiron Classic. But two years ago the NEC champion received a bid into the expanded 20 team Division I playoff field. This likely was concerning to the PFL schools as the PFL champion defeated the NEC champion in three of the four contests.
