Always like following when schools drop programs. Definitely raises eyebrows and is not the first HBCU to talk about it recently (seen some SWAC baseball talk from the 'Bama schools) or school in general (some hurricane-related, quite a bit of other issues too).

Budgets are the name of the game!

A&T nixes men's tennis program

GREENSBORO -- With little attention or financial support, the N.C. A&T men's tennis program managed to go from a ragtag, low-budget operation to a MEAC contender in five years.

Competitiveness doesn't pay the bills in a nonrevenue sport, though, and athletics director Dee Todd announced Wednesday that the Aggies were disbanding the program immediately.

Eliminating the men's tennis program, which leaves A&T with 15 varsity teams, will save the athletics department $52,700 this year, according to school projections. Because of the timing of the decision, A&T will honor scholarship commitments to returning players for 2006-07, though at least one intends to transfer immediately.

The following year, those savings are expected to increase to $105,800, Todd said. That's not insignificant for a department that posted a budget deficit of nearly $1 million for the 2003-04 school year -- the most recent for which full records are available -- and continues to suffer a shortfall.
