After Jerry Sandusky's sexual misdeeds came to light, the thought of child sexual abuse striking another college football team seemed almost unfathomable, but on Tuesday, Minnesota State coach Todd Hoffner was booked into Blue Earth County jail on suspicion of using underage people in a sexual performance and possession of child pornography.

I have a real problem equating the Penn State scandal and any other college football scandal, sexual or otherwise, because the circumstances are so different. Lazy journalists are trying to equate the two, and that's just ridiculous.

Not quite Penn State. This might be a long ugly court case.

Not a Penn St but still a sicko walking around another campus . But they are everywhere not just college football programs.

That link makes it sound even worse. Preying on kids is bad enough, but doing it to your own children takes it to a whole new level of depravity.

Will the NCAA come down on Mankato State (sorry Minnesota State-Mankato) like they did to PSU? MSU has DII sports but DI hockey.

I would say unlikely. The NCAA didn't come down on Penn State because of what Sandusky did. They came down on PSU because of what PSU did to cover it up.

I think that LIbertine is right. The school turned him in. No one witnessed anything except on the cell phone when he asked the IT department to move it over to the new phone.

If anything, the IT guy and the school were the heroes in this sad tale. Penn State could learn something from these folks.

Exactly...at MSU-Mankato they care more about people than football something PSU forgot. Sad deal, but I am glad MSU-M did something about it instead of covering it up. Can't wait to see UND take on MSU-M in hockey in the last season of being conference mates.

And what proof is there that Penn State covered anything up? Exactly what court of law has convicted Penn State of covering anything up?

The fact that it happened for how many years during the Paterno era. All in the name of football. If PSU would have stopped this when it first happened they could be a favorite for a BCS title not banned from postseason, have recruits leave, and had records erased. Yah I call that a coverup.

Are you kidding? There is 0 need to rehash this Penn State **** again. You want to keep a blind eye on that situation then please go ahead, but the rest of the world see Penn State for that they did (or didn't do)...

Yeah, just as I thought.... NO PROOF. Until ALL of the facts are out, good and bad, there is nothing but a single report that has not been vetted in a significant manner. Amazing to me how people let there bias and the need to rush to judgement cloud otherwise sound practice.

Isn't it fascinating that, over the course of the last nine months, not a single person or independent investigative unit has come forward to refute the core charges in the Freeh report? The Paterno family defense has been, essentially "we need more time, the investigation wasn't done right", while Spanier's defense is, essentially, "hey, I was abused as a kid, too" (which is terrible and I have compassion for him, but it's completely besides the point). Yet no proof has been offered clearing Penn State at all, while an avalanche of evidence supports the fact that there was a cover-up.
A lot of sportswriters I used to respect are focusing on the "angels on the head of a pin" argument of process and "innocent until proven guilty" while summarily ignoring the mountain of facts staring them in the face, as if throwing the case out on a technicality really makes Penn State admins innocent. I'd advise looking at the Freeh report timeline once again - just the timeline - and asking yourself the question: is the report wrong?
Again, the Minnesota State admins did the right thing. There's suspicion of something wrong, law enforcement is alerted, coach arrested. It actually serves as a powerful counterpoint as to what Penn State could have done, but didn't.

A single report contracted by PSU itself (i.e. having potential to be less than independent), done by a former FBI director. On top of that PSU has opted to accept the punishment doled out by the NCAA. That's all the PROOF I need and if anything my bias initially led me to believe(hope) that it wasn't a coverup (or at least JoePa wasn't involved). Hard to deny a report done by an experienced investigator with no reason to fabricate anything. If the report was anything but independent, I would think he searched high and low for evidence that suggested his client (PSU) did nothing wrong. xtwocentsx

If you read the Freef report you would find all the information you needed. But if you support a school that completey disregards humanity in a quest and bowl games then go right ahead. I am just glad MOST people can see it for what it is. And you cannot ignore the report since PSU was behind it and supported its results.

The Penn State admin themselves signed off on and accepted the findings of the Freeh report which say a cover-up happened. If the brass at PSU is convinced of it, I don't see why the rest of us shouldn't be. If you want to contest the findings of the report, be my guest but don't act like everyone else is crazy for accepting it at face value.

That's what bothers me about the Paterno Family especially. They will deny the "allegations" til the cows come home, but won't produce anything. If they think he's innocent it must be because they know something, have some letter, a record of a phone call, something to vindicate Joe. And frankly about half the state is probably hoping and praying some how they can prove he still is St. Paterno

Bump on this thread. My uncle was in town last night staying at a nearby hotel with lounge. I joined him for a beer and we find out the MSU-Mankato team is staying there on their way to Minot State for a game Thursday and their coaches are all in the lounge having a few drinks.
Needless to say, they didn't want to talk about anything related to the head coach, and instead, shared stories of the antics encountered on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.
